How to reduce AM5 Ryzen 7000 series Power usage and reduce temps.
AM5 the new AMD platform run HOT! really HOT!! with the Processor targeting a 95c temp limit and always trying to hit that regardless of the load on the system.
Clearly for a lot of people this is too hot and will make the system cooler and case fans work overtime to try and keep that under control.
So in the video we look at some modifications that can be made at the EUFI BIOS level to take back control of the Processor and the temps and power usage.
This is pretty easy to do and doesn't really need any hardware level knowledge, but some info on what your specific CPU limits are will be helpful to try and dial in settings quicker and leave the system cooler, quieter and in some cases actually faster!
Curve optimiser set to negative and the maximum is -30 so have a play with that!
PPT limits
Stock settings
7950x 230w PPT
7900x 230w PPT
7700x 140w PPT
7600x 142w PPT
For Eco Mode on the 7600X and 7700X:
PPT Limit: 88 (AMD stock 105W recommended settings: 142)
TDC Limit: 75 (AMD stock 105W recommended settings: 110)
EDC Limit: 150 (AMD stock 105W recommended settings: 170)
For Eco Mode on the 7900X and 7950X:
PPT Limit: 142 (AMD stock 170W recommended settings: 230)
TDC Limit: 110 (AMD stock 170W recommended settings: 160)
EDC Limit: 170 (AMD stock 170W recommended settings: 225)
I would suggest trying to take off 50w and see where that gets you in benchmarks and testing.
In platfrom thermal throttle control you can set this to whatever you feel comfortable with, just remember the lower the number the more restrictive it will be on overall performance

im guessing it depends on cpu? but since negative 30 is the max does going even further ike negative 40 even doing anything ? im possibly upgradeing to an AM5 build in the coming month to an 7800x3D afaik that only has an negative 30 as the "lowest" setting to go so is the 7600x possible to go even lower? also seen some saying they are going beyond -30 on a x3d cpu
@sharkey9
@sharkey9 3 месяца назад
@@n0ex Probably it's the BIOS which allows more than -30. I'm running ASUS TUF Gaming B650. And yes, of course, all depends on the CPU. Is it worth it going more than -30? I guess not. You would never notice apart from a few points in a benchmark. So consider -30 as a sweetspot.
@RoGie_B
@RoGie_B 2 месяца назад
@@mikesunboxing Yes. Because the 30 limit is from the 5800X3D. The 7th series can up to 50. But mostly not on all cores. My 7800X3D is working on Core1-8 between -38 and -20. (C1: -38, C2: -32, C3: -34, C4: -20, C5: -20, C6: -20, C7: -28, C8: -27. The PPT on 85, EDC 180, TDC 120, THM 85, FIT scalar 1, Max freq 5050. For my silicone the settings are stable :). For gaming you dont need all cores. The fact that Core 4-6 are working on -20 says: Sweetspot here is -20. But hey, 500 points more on Cinebench doesnt matter for gaming so -20 for all cores is great. I also tested it with 45W up to 100W. There are no big dif. between the Cinebench results. So for gamers with a small or stock cooler i would go with 65W. Best regards from Berlin! Great Video. Tool i used: Hydra 1.6B PRO (OC Sandbox).

Excellent video, Mike! I'm on Alder Lake but I still like to learn. By the way, what about Eco Mode? Here is another "thank you" from North Carolina. After a recent Windows 11 update my PC stopped putting my monitor on standby and therefore no longer shut off my USB-powered monitor and microphone lights. One of your motherboard videos - it was Gigabyte and I'm using MSI - showed me how the ErP motherboard setting was the problem. I have no idea why a Windows update would have affected that setting but I'm pretty sure I didn't change it. I'd checked everything under the sun - except that! This is the fourth time your channel has solved a PC problem for me! Thanks again!

When you enable or put precision boost overdrive to advanced, is that basically msi's auto oc feature? Is that the same thing as game boost on the root menu? Also at the end when you changed ppt, is that the same thing basically as changing the "tdp profile" i think the name was, i saw you messing with it on the bios tutorial video, with the exception that through ppt you can change it manually more accuratelly, rather than choosing from profiles which were like 105/85 etc?

My goal is not to min max everything i can from the system, im happy if i can get something extra by tweaking or using some auto method without shortening the lifespan of the components.

Hi, did you find the right voltages?
@choppergirl
@choppergirl 8 месяцев назад
@@PushCashTTV For the ram, or the CPU? I found an easier way to underclock the CPU, at least on my Gigabyte AORUS Elite AX Motherboard... on the main Advanced Settings menu, there is a setting you can pull down (I believe it's called Active OC Tuner the 4th item down on Advanced Settings page) to set it to 90C Level 1, or 80C Level 1, or 70C Level 1 (or Level 2, 3, 4, 5). The first number is the target max temp you don't want the CPU to exceed. The second number is by how many millivolts x10 you want to undervolt the CPU. Depending on your silicon lottery luck will determine how low you can undervolt your CPU before it will randomly crash on full load or not boot at all. In my case, Level 1 is stable. Level 2 was stable only until I put the CPU under full load. Level 3,4, and 5 my system would not boot at all. If you mean voltages for memory, there is a video i found on YT of someone who got 4 DIMMs to run at 6000mghz and screenshots of his voltage and timing settings, though I have not tried them with my 5200mghz ram. From memory training, my RAM is running at 4800Mghz after boot (while in BIOS it will run at a safe conservative 3600Mghz, but speeds up once booted out of UEFI bios)

-TL;DR: If you are using a gigabyte motherboard and having problems with PBO, update to latest bios and enable PBO Enhancer to 90Level 2-3, save and exit, go back in and adjust your cores accordingly. Much better temps, freq. stays higher, same or slightly better performance.- NVM, still getting high temps after more testing. Only thing that works is pinning the core clock ratio to ~5.x. Lower temps and the same scores. Something about the boost algorithm is driving the temps wild, it seems. My 7600x will hit ~92 doing cinebench R23, but it'll hit 97+ during some torture tests. All my cores are PBO -30, except core 5, with -25, and I'm using a Noctua DH-15 cooler. During these specific torture tests that cause a lot of heat, I can also hear a whining sound, coming from around the cpu, while it's under load. Edit: Went back to stock, max temps during R23 went down to ~86. So, tried PBO +10, thinking maybe they were reversed, back up to ~92. Also had the highest score on stock settings. Idk, seems mine want to be left alone, lmao. Edit 2: So, disabled PBO, pinned the clock ratio to 5.35 Ghz... Highest score in R23, using a max of 92 W and only reaching ~83 degrees. I can't make any sense of this, lmao. Unstable, though. Crashed so hard on a torture test, I had to reset the bios. Edit 3: After resetting my bios, now stock settings is acting like PBO -30 was before, and PBO -30 is providing the better temps/score. Not the first time I reset this bios, mind you. Not sure why it's doing what it is.

@@mikesunboxing No difference. PBO -30 settings still hitting 88 in R23, still whining under certain loads, and still hitting ~98 in some torture tests. OCCT cpu test, large data set, normal, variable. It'll stay at around 88 until 2 minutes in, when it shoots up past max temps. Only in the variable setting though. If I put in on steady, which you would think would produce more heat, it stays at a reasonable temp. Edit: Solved. On the newest bios for gigabyte, I had to enable the new "PBO enhancement" feature. That option with 90level5, etc. It didn't seem to work in the last bios, but in this one, it won't apply the pbo settings until you save and exit. I'm now getting better temperatures than ever, with equal performance. Would recommend staying near level2 or 3. 3 will set all cores to -30, then you can adjust accordingly.

A bunch of tips and complements to this video : - None of the tips shown in the video helps with idle temps. If you want to reduce them, you'll have to disable some cores in Windows. I don't recommend. - I can only recommend closing all useless programs (including ASUS Armoury Crate which for some reason keeps all cores awake and makes my idle wattage 75W instead of 20W) and background tasks you don't need (RGB controller, auto-startup programs in Windows task manager, internet -especially chromium based- browser). - From experience (Ryzen 5800X), per core CO coefficients are better. I managed to pull -10 on my 2 fastest cores and -15 for the rest. Best cores are chosen by windows to be the most efficient, so it's common to fail putting the same undervolt on them than the rest. - You're lucky you could put the CO at maximum on your chip. - Reducing the platform thermal limit is a great idea. - Still on my 5800X, PPT TDC EDC are 120/90/120. That's because I want to limit my thermal output. - PPT is always 1.35x CPU's TDP. So for a 5800X that has a 105W TDP, the PPT will be 142 by default. Reduce this setting only if you want to sacrifice top power at 100% CPU usage for better thermals. - Don't bother lowering clocks for lower heat like you'd do on intel's. Ryzen CPU's WILL run at max boost clock as long as they can, and skip cycles when there's no load on the cores. - Curve optimizer is the way to go because each CO point doesn't represent a fixed amount of millivolts. It'll be 5mV at the top of the curve, and 3mV at the bottom. This is much better than raw voltage offset which will make your pc crash at very low loads (when some cores are idle). - Ryzen chips are designed to run up to 95°C at max load. Expect 80°C with a high-end cooler. Don't try to lower these temps with aggressive fan profiles, you'll end playing on a leaf blower instead of a desktop. My personal fan curve is a straight line, from (60°C, 0%) to (90°C, 100%) and I think even that is too aggressive.

The specs are the way thy are built. the 90d is normal for this PCU. i would get worried if they get like 120D

When I set pbo limit they turn to 0 and not auto. I set the ppt to what I want but Idk what the tdc and edc should be? Can I just leave them at 0 and they will be auto?

yes that sounds about right

Had a quick question about Platform Thermal Throttle limit. Does setting the value to 80-85 help lower temperatures overall or is it just telling the PC "hey start throttling or shut off if the PC reaches this" because I basically don't want it to do that for a couple reasons. One I have been having a weird problem where battlenet downloads of all things will ramp my CPU up and drive my temps to almost 90c+ and it will shut off my pc. My temps for everything else are fine. I game at 4k for hours no problem maybe 60-70c, idle around 40-50. I do have problems If I try to push 144fps 4k gaming though, it'll shut off the pc cause it reaches those 85-90c ranges.

yes that is right it doesn't really do anything other than limit the temps and throttle the cpu. downloads like battlenet and steam are generally the worse things as the data compression and decompression are extremely CPU heavy tasks. it might be worth looking into undervolting or getting a bigger cpu cooler

@@mikesunboxing Thanks for the reply. I did undervolt and have it at about -15 now which has helped temps a little more. Running cinebench had the temps around 85c still but idle and gaming seem a little lower. I do have a deepcool lt520 240mm aio and I don't think a 360 would help too much more at least in terms of those two problems mainly cause I have seen other testing that have shown this, its just a weird problem all around.

sounds like the cooler might not be mounted okay, or the pump speed is too low

I had to come back and do this all over again, tried running ryzen master in eco mode as a experiment and the pc wouldn’t boot, I have g-skill ddr5 6000mhz and I read in Reddit that that ram caused issues with others. Had to pull CMOS battery but I’m back up now and the pc see the 6000mhz ram again. Very frustrating though.

@@mikesunboxingI went to 90 watts, not going over 67c when running cinebench, score is a few points lower but not hitting 95c.

Unfortunately on my 7600 power limit just doesn’t drop to the specified one. Generally used power was around 97-98W but when I set PPT in BIOS to use 80W it still uses 97-98W regardless. I also have offset set to -20 but still no luck on dropping temperatures:(

something a bit weird going on there, maybe go into curve optimiser and choose the eco mode option or 65w limit

I was able to get my cinebench score up in the 15200 range … but unfortunately suffered crashes afterwards… that was with -20 … I tried -10 and now my score is 14,500 and no more crashes… I guess my silicone is average 🙁
