We've planned a very interesting project for today. We're going to turn a english carving-mallet. Emma will show you how it's done. Look forward to an educational video where you'll easily create a high-quality tool for your workshop.

Good looking mallet. I find while cutting for the wedge, one only has to cut half way down the length of the tenon.

What alternative can you demonstrate if you don’t have a second chuck with narrow jaws. Lovely video!
@TheTinyTurner
@TheTinyTurner 4 месяца назад
You can make a jam chuck with a scrap piece of wood which fits the diameter of the inner hole. If you do this I would recommend bringing up the tailstock with a standard revolving centre just to steady it as you remove as much of the tenon as possible, then try and turn the last bit without the tailstock in place (if you need to). If it is not stable enough, then you may have to take the last bit off with a carving tool or sand it away 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks. I did know this but many people starting out do not have multiple chucks or other equipment so alternative method suggestions are always useful. Keep up the good demonstrations!

great work Emma, very inspirational. What kind of wood did you use + the stain? in video you mentioned Beech wood but I am not sure if it's the one you used. Love the nutmeg color

Good video , l find a longer handle gives you a heavier swing . Putting a lot more cut on the tool .

This is a carving mallet and we use them in a specific way - you don’t swing them: you flick them with your fingers so you don’t want it longer or it will impede on your wrist and potentially mark the work you are carving. For extra reference, stone masons have their handles even shorter because the butt of the handle can break the stone if it contacts it, so theirs finish just in the fleshy bit of your palm (nearest the wrist) 👍🏻

@@TheTinyTurneryou should visit the DFT . It´s a Woodturner Meeting where Turners from Germany , Switzerland and the Netherlands meet once every 2 Years. This Year it’s in Olbernhau , it’s at 25thand 26th May . Simon Hope , Mick Hanbury and Colwin Way will there be too . KS Schulte and a lot more . I think you would like it. Not to tell you your business but your lathe centre is too high for you, its also a bad example to viewers, you're going to end up with joint problems (particularly shoulders) using it like that. Too high is almost as bad as too low, the lathe centre should be at elbow height when your arms are hanging straight down. You do great work but its even affecting the bevel angles on your chisels and gouges, honestly you need to raise yourself up atleast 25cm as far as I can tell ...I have the opposite problem I am way taller than most so I have to build lathe stands way up to get them right for me.

Thanks for your comment, Emma is a Professional Demonstrator and she is tiny, she Always has lathes that are to high and she Said its Not Problem. In her own Workshop, of course, the lathe has the correct height.

Hi Emma... Great mallet.. very nicely turned... Really professional video quality.. I wish that I could get mine that good !! Good point about not splitting the handle with the wedge.. It's also good practice to orient the wedge across the grain of the mallet head so as not to split the head. Great video... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
