How to turn a Ginseng Ficus into a real Bonsai Tree

Funny story about this ginseng, when we purchased the house the previous owner left it behind, and us not being plant people but wanting to have something green in the house kept it, it’s been kicked, dropped, left without water for weeks, anything you can think of this tree has gone through it. Eventually I discovered bonsai and this was one of my first experimental trees, when it came to repotting, I put it in bonsai soil and kept up with the watering and here it is now. Styled today for its first time and hopefully one day it’ll become a beautiful tree.

I just bought a ginseng ficus but im scared to cut back leaves like that I don't wanna kill it its about the same maturity as the one in the video with two solid branches full of foliage. any recommendations on how to go about it without removing so much and potentially an update on the one in the video? thanks

I would wait until summer. If you’re scared, just cut the leaves in half. That will increase ramification and more leaves and branches will grow back. Remember that after you do this, to place the tree in a shaded area for a few days and able it to recover. Ginseng’s are so hard to kill, just cut the leaves in half and you should be good

Nice video Why are we cutting the leaves half? Also how many days does it take for new leaves to grow. Thank you

not an expert or a professional, but I've had my bonsai for like 8 months now, i can't answer the first question, but for the second one it depends, i've noticed they grow faster when they get more/more direct light (and also when they're born they are a bit curled up, they open up a lot faster with direct light)

May I ask what kind of wire that is you are using ?

Can I ask what soil to use for when I repot mine? Is a normal Bonsai mix alright to use like Akadama and pumice etc and the fertiliser to put on top?

Yeah I’m curious too

For ginseng bonsai, it's okay without akadama. A normal bonsai ground/soil with a mixture of substrate is well enough.

It depends, are you keeping it inside or outside? And when was the last time you changed its soil?
@ikillprettythingz7947

@@theworldofbonsai641 it's inside because outside there's snow. I just bought it 2 weeks ago haven't changed the soil.

My best guess would be that it’s not getting enough light, or also it could be adapting to its new environment so that’s why. I’d put it next to a window where it gets direct sunlight, and just be careful not to over water it

I've noticed that some Ginseng tends to loose some/all leaves when changing climates. Give it time to aclimitise and it will grow back if it like the area it's in.

@MaxSpider2000
@MaxSpider2000 3 года назад
@@fullmetalzelda4864 What are you two talking about? This is exactly how Bonsai are made and the tree is completely fine and alive. Cutting growth is called pruning and is a standard practice which makes the tree sprout more shoots and make it denser. bonsai is basically the art of training your plant to grow a certain way, not killing it. Learn about it before going on a rant. Please respect art and tradition :)
