How to turn off the auto focus on a Logitech c920 or any other webcam. If you are teaching yoga online using Zoom with a webcam, you may experience blurry video because of the autofocus of your Logitech camera. Here is how to fix that.

Awww, this is such a wonderful compliment. For me it's the sense that "people need help and I'm just going to do it in the most efficient and direct way possible." I believe this was one of my 10pm video recordings after my toddler son went to bed. I didn't have daycare and I had to try to squeeze in video creation whenever the little one was sleeping. When time is limited, there's no room for second guessing. Just had to make it and post it.

Thanks for this Ashley. I use Windows 10 and your Tip prompted me ot look for a setting on my system. I found that the 'built-in' Camera app (didn't have to buy anything) allows changes to the setting and changes do carry over to Zoom. I have a Microsoft webcam, so looks like it may not be tied to the maker/version of webcam. Thanks again.

Have you played with the free software download that Logitech provides (Logi Capture)? It has auto focus off and expands the video window too, which is great for teachers. I have to launch it every time I open Zoom.

@@AshleyHagen I downloaded the same app that you did and just turned off auto focus. Then I got my husband to stand on the mat and I was able to use the manual focus to properly set the focus. I have not had any issue since! Thanks again!

Hey, I need to make long professional good quality yoga video. For this dslr doesn't work coz it has 15 min time limit. So I am bit confused between mobile camera / this webcam / DJI osmo pocket. Can you suggest me that does it's quality is better than a phone eg OnePlus camera ?

Thank you! Had this issue yesterday with using webcam to show student storyboards and the autofocust (at 6" away from surface) could catch good focus and then indiscriminately migrate out of focus. This will will help me troubleshoot for next time!

Hey Ashley, thank you for this video. I had recently purchased the Webcam c920 and I had the autofocus problem which brought me to your youtube video here. What I need to ask you to add to your instruction is that the Webcam settings app you are using no longer works on newer version Macs. I have found this out today and it seems that it hasnt worked on on newer Macs since the beginning of 2020. Many people have purchased the App but it doesnt work for them on these newer versions. I havent yet found out which app does. Maybe someone here can enlighten me. Otherwise I have been watching so many of your videos in the last 24hrs and they are answering many of my questions. So thank you.

This post is helpful however the problem I now have is once the auto focus is off, is that nothing is in focus apart from when I'm really close up to the screen. This is no use as I want to teach yoga. I've disabled the autofocus through LogiTune. Any suggestions? I'd be grateful for any thoughts on how to set the focus on me on my yoga mat, from my laptop.

Logitech has its own settings software you download from their website? There was an option to off auto focus too..

Honestly, I haven’t had any issues with the auto focus on my Logitech cam myself. Fb live is fine, zoom is fine, recording on QuickTime is fine. Sometimes it gets blurry for a few seconds, but I’m not fancy enough to care. I’ve just heard this being an issue for others. And it can be little annoying. As a yoga teacher, I’m far enough back that I don’t need any kind of focus. I could just turn it all the way down. My lighting and filming space is good enough to not worry so much.

I also have an issue with this auto-focus, one of the reasons why I had a bad video. Have you tried the Logitech app? I got it recently and still trying to find out how all the settings work? Do you think it would be possible to turn off the auto-focus with it?

Probably. Someone mentioned in a comment on this video that the logitech app does work, too. I just wanted to make this video mostly to tell people that it IS possible to turn it off.

I’m sure there is a webcam settings for windows. There might even be in built in. Logitech has a free app that i didn’t find before this video. Do a Google search for “webcam settings app for PC”

I also had this issue. My computer's RAM was not enough for streaming HD. I also had to change some settings from the WIndow. I have upgraded the RAM to 8GB and now is not lagging anymore.

For Zoom, sure. But Zoom video quality isn't the best. I prefer to record using QuickTime on my Mac computer for recording videos. In that case, changing Zoom settings wouldn't work.

This doesn't really help for some of us PC users, as we don't use 'apps'. I'm using OBS to record and my webcam, that's the same one you use, I can turn off the auto focus in OBS, but that doesn't help as everything outside what I set the focus too is blured even if its a general workspace, the focus point is such a small narrow window that even moving something the distance of a quarter puts it out of focus. If auto focus is on, it LOVES focusing on some background element rather than you know, ME, or what I'm trying to show off. I also wish google worked that well because the moment you put in 'webcam' and 'background' in the search like 'stop webcam from autofocus on background', no matter what else is there, it defaults to 'how to blur background effect'. I would love to record my drawings or my crafts, but I am fighting more with the focus to stay on what I want it to focus on, without oh, my hands now on the other end of the paper, it's now blurred as it's not on the center part the focus is set on. There's no way to make the whole scene focused for some bloody reason.

Look for "Logitech webcam software" on Google and it'll come up. It might be the Logitech Capture software. There is a workaround for all computers

I think you can also accomplish the same result by downloading the free Logitech software and turning off auto-focus. I found it a little confusing, but the $8 hack saved me a lot of frustration and was worth it to me.

@@AshleyHagen Unfortunately Logitech's free software is only for Intel processors and currently no support for M1 computers. Even tried downloading some of their older outdated software as a potential workaround, no dice. But your suggestion here solved my issue so thank you again!

It can be tricky. Good lighting can help it focus a lot better. I much prefer the Logitech Brio now days.

Bummer, sorry to hear that! There is Logitech software that is free, though. Look up the Logitech webcam software and it should pull up. I haven't played with the Logitech software, though, since this work-around did work for me.
