This video will show you how to quickly turn on Windows Media Streaming on your PC so that you stream videos, music and pictures to any compatible device on your home network. It will show you how to configure by selecting which folders on you PC you want to stream from and finally how to access it from a client device.
Windows Media Streaming is embedded in Windows and supports DLNA streaming to compatible clients which tends to be any device that supports streaming such as TVs, mobile phones, video consoles etc. It allows you to implement a home media server solution without any additional hardware or software.
Windows Media Streaming is disabled by default in Windows so you need to turn it and configure it.
When enabled you'll be able to stream music, video and pictures to client devices.

I don't have windows media player that looks like that, it is now just media player. It has none of the selections available on the left. How do I go back to the player you are using in your video?

this really helped! thanks! though this helped access the video files on my smart TV, all MKV files are shown on the TV with their titles and not filename. is there any way to work around this? ideally i would like the list to show the filenames. I did see tutorials where MKV file metadata is cleared using 3rd part software, is there a more simpler way to get this done in windows? looking forward to your response! cheers!

Hi Christo, check out the following from withing Windows Explorer: Right Click on the MKV file and select properties Click on "Remove Properties and Personal Information" Select "Create a copy with all possible properties removed" Click OK I don't have the same problem with any of my TVs (all LG) so cannot validate on my own setup.

@@EuviRail this solution was one of the first things I tried when I realised the TV was picking up the 'Title' instead of filename. While your solution works well for all file types, MKV seems to be an exception. The metadata simply does not want to be removed. I too am using an LG smart TV and my server is my laptop running Win11 and I use native windows media streaming function instead of the LG Smartshare software. Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks!

I was able to edit my MKV titles using MKVToolNix - www.fosshub.com/MKVToolNix.html. It's not the most user friendly tool but it is powerful and and it allows you to just edit the MKV header and not have to re-encode. I think I may need to do a quick video on this. I hope this helps.

liked but it didn't work for me, still cannot see my videos either from my TV or even from my smartphone. My PC was visible yesterday but not this morning. I even went and disabled media streaming and re-enabled it. Removed and added again the folders in the library

This was a great video but for some reason I can not see the files in the shared folders, this happens on all devices including XBox, LG TV and Samsung TV 😢

Hi David, a few potential reasons for this. One is in the Media Player application when add folders to a library. You need to add the folders under each of the media formats contained in the folders. So when you go into Media Player and select Organise+Manage Libraries+Video for example to add your folder, if there is music in that folder as well, you need to select Organise+Manage Libraries+Music and add the same folder again. Media Player itself needs to index the added files which if adding a lot of files on a very busy system could take a while. On my LG TV, I pick the media app for video/photos (if I want to view a video), that I select the "Video" folder (this is a clunky extra step you get on most DLNA clients), then I select my host device (PC), then the folder on the PC which I had added for videos under Manage Libraries. Usually it's a case that I haven't added the folder under the category of files in the folder or the file is something the client doesn't recognise. I do get this from time to time on some of my LG TVs. Newer devices don't supprot AVI files any more for example - in which case you need to use Handbrake to convert the file to a newer format which is the reason I posted a video on that. I hope this helps.

I see my music server but client devices can't see any content. Media Player loads libraries but only locally. Strangely enough, I could play some mp3's from OneDrive.... So either Windows Media Player does not updates my libraries correctly (I move them to D drive) or there is something wrong in my network setup (Firewall prevents clients to trigger on WMP?)

I tried to stream my Windows 10 folder to a Nexigo PJ40 projector. The only thing it did was mirror the screen. In the network screen it asked for a username and password. But it doesn't specify what username or password. Does anyone know?

You need a DLNA client to access the Windows Media Server media files. This is built into most so called Smart TVs as shown in the video. Not sure if the PJ40 has similar Smart features? If accessing from a Smart Phone you will normally need to download a DLNA compatible client to be able to access the file. It sounds like the connection to your PC is a network file system access which is why it is asking for a username and password.

Can you stream to any other device to make sure your Windows is streaming properly? If Windows is doing it's thing I haven't found a device that wouldn't stream though that doesn't rule out issues with specific apps. DLNA streaming is pretty universal.
