It should be illegal to honk at someone in front of you because you’re not turning on a red. I turned on a red just like twenty minutes ago because I felt the pressure behind me (usually almost always it’s only a matter of time before I get honked at) and I turned and the car that was coming though not in the lane I was turning into honked at me and I instantly regretted giving in to the pressure. What we need to remind yourselves is that the person behind you who honks at you is NOT going to take responsibility if you did get in to an accident . All they will say is “why did you turn just because I honked ?” I would love to see NO TURN ON RED on all signals eventually.

Smart Drive Test thanks Rick. I get so tired of getting honked at when I’m at a red and one day I feel like I’m going to lose it and get out of my car to go yell in their face. I’m shocked to no end that it happens as often as it does that I am convinced the majority of people are just assholes. I love it when I see the “ no turn on red” sign because I can then just relax without feeling the pressure . They want you to take the risk but I’m 1000% certain that they would never step forward and take the blame if an accident did happen.

Smart Drive Test Rick, can you help me out here? I’m trying to figure out if I have a traffic ticket on the way. I stupidly caved into the pressure to make a right turn on a red this evening even though no one was honking at me (at least not yet) only to notice as I was turning that there was a sign that indicated no turn on red. It was past 9 PM and no cars so I turned even though I would have preferred to wait. I’m so furious with myself and because the city it was located at is quite a distance away, I didn’t feel like turning back to take another look although if I had turned back right away , it wouldn’t have been that much of a detour. Sigh....I know I will know for certain with time if a ticket comes in the mail but is there another faster way for me to find out? I tried google earth but I’m not getting anything useful .
SleeplessinOC if you don’t plan on turning right at all, then move to the left lane ahead of time. Otherwise turn right when its safe to do so. Let’s get traffic moving.

In Ontario, you’re not required by law to turn right on a red light. Some may say by not turning on a red light you are impeding with the regular flow of traffic. My advice to them is I rather be safe than sorry and they can honk all they want.

Ok this was my very same question what if u want to wait it out? Will u get dinged on a driving test for waiting it out? I think a right turn on red is more for someone with lots of experience already
I almost caused a wreck today because I was trying to turn right on red but the person in the lane to the left of me (waiting for the light to turn green to go right) pulled wayyy out over the line and I was looking to my left (my view was impaired due to the person blocking my view) and I guess the person behind me wanted me to hurry up so they laid on the horn and I went and I didn’t see a car coming from the left and they had to slam on their brakes for me. I feel very bad about it and I’m nervous to ever drive again I get so nervous and jittery
let him wait don't rush because cars behind you are trying to rush you . Becareful next time whenever it happens to me i just stay calm and care about my safety first
I feel most of the time the person behind you doesn't usually have the clear view that you do as being the car in front and watch out for your own safety and go when you feel and know for sure it is clear and if they honk just don't pay attention to them being impatient .
Very good instructional video. I am a driving instructor and it's amazing at how many people don't stop, don't use their turn signal, try to squeeze into the bike lane, turn into the incorrect lane, etc. And for the impatient driver behind that will honk if you don't make the turn. Taking your road test in a city? You may have to demonstrate that you can turn right at an intersection on a red light. Learn the correct procedure and how to give the right-of-way to all other road users - watch the video. Still, if you're not comfortable turning on the red, you CAN wait for the green light. Even though I passed my driver test 4 years ago I still come back to these video here and there. Almost got hit cause the person behind me didn't turn in right lane first then go into the left lane I did it the right way. The person had time to hit the horn but not the brakes & had the nerve to high beam me I ignored the person just shaked my head in disappointment

Hey there Rick! VERY important video for new drivers. I certainly had a big challenge when turning right on red when I was a new driver. I think that this is probably one of the top challenging things for new drivers since firstly, it is dangerous if not done properly, and secondly, it is sometimes difficult to know what all is going on in the intersection. What I mean is that the driver needs to know for sure who has the green light before they turn. Usually, cross traffic has the green, however, when they get amber, the new driver might still be looking for traffic from there, and possibly not noticed the amber, and wonder why traffic is stopping, and just be super confused as to what is happening. I know this because it happened to me when I was first learning to drive. I actually made a HUGE blunder, almost causing an accident because of this. Also, often, just like in the video, the oncoming traffic gets advanced green, and since one turning on the red cannot see this, it may be confusing, and for a new driver even more so. After that incident, I am super cautious when turning right on red. My best tip for new drivers would be to KNOW FOR SURE who has the green light, and that way you know who you have to yield to. Overall, be extra cautious when performing this manoeuvre because it certainly isn't the safest one out there.

No worries! The driving solo is going pretty well. A good feeling of independence. In fact, I was at the bus stop at the corner of an intersection yesterday, there was nothing to do so I decided I might as well watch how drivers turning at the red light haha. At one point, the light was red and oncoming traffic had the advanced green, however a guy was deciding whether to turn right on the red. He was looking to the left thinking cross traffic had green. However, of course cross traffic has stopped since it it advanced green for oncoming. So, he decided "Well, screw it I'm gonna turn" without realizing oncoming traffic had advanced green. He realized a little too late, when he had completed the turn. Even though there were a couple lanes on the new road, the left turning vehicle came very close to this guy. That's why I just wanted to point out it's super important to know who has the green light, and if you don't know, just don't turn.

If a vehicle is turning right on the red, and the opposing traffic has the advanced green onto multi-lanes, it is important for the right turning traffic to turn in beside the spaces of the left turning vehicles - not in beside the vehicles. I’m 47, a beginner driver and about to finish my 14-hour practical driving course (8 hours for basic and 6 hours for advanced). Since it’s very expensive to take additional courses, I’m just relying on YT videos to acquire additional knowledge. Good thing that I came across your channel and your videos are helping me a lot! Here in the Philippines, most roads are narrow with a lot of obstacles, poor road conditions and uneducated drivers. So put them all together, a very challenging situation especially for someone like me. What you impart in your tutorials adds more confidence and better understanding to what I’ve learned in driving school. Almost got into a wreck attempting this, my teacher said go there was pedestrians tried to turn right as we went the light changed and the person stepped off the curb.. the person you drive with makes a huge difference when learning how to drive.
And while we are talking about turning right on red, just a cautionary tip on the regulatory sign which says "No Turn on Red". Often times, as a beginner, I used to end up completely ignoring this sign (of course inadvertently) while turning right on red, and I believe it happens majorly because of our prime attention focused on watching the traffic and pedestrians/bikes/etc. As a matter of fact, this was the very main reason I flunked my driving test in my first attempt! Long story short, just making sure we pay attention to the regulatory signs, if any, that restrict turning on red, is very very important to avoid possible mishap (and of course, a red light violation ticket ;))... All the best!! Note: The above at least applies here in California. Not sure if there's any similar rule in other regions.

I'm here for a knowledge refresh. I failed my first attempt for class 2 because I had some bad habits from driving for 30+ years. One being taking both hands of the wheel to adjust my head band at a stop sign ( 🤯 woops ) and I had another when I stopped at a stop light to turn right, a cube van was beside me, I pulled ahead looking around the van and then went. The examiner called it 'turn right on road without stopping.' 🤷♀ He said I should have stopped in front of the van and check every thing as well as shoulder checks. So treating that situation as a yield after the stop was wrong, and be more obvious with the shoulder checks, even though I've seen city busses do it all the time :P I did stop before I snuck ahead to see around the van, The van was over the stop line but the stop line wasn't very visible. I'm in Prince George BC, the snow and slush makes the lines hard to see. I have another test coming next Monday. The head band is coming off and I may get whiplash from the shoulder checks lol ( Granny school bus driver is the plan lol )

Very few people come to a full stop! It is not enforced so it is getting much worse with each passing year. I'm always worried that someone is going to rear end me cause I always do stop.

1:40 How would you know if they have a green arrow or a green? They could be yielding to you as you are oncoming traffic but you're waiting for them to go assuming they have a green arrow??
Hi Shallδ - Thank you for your question. If the other side of the intersection has an advanced green, your light will be red. Therefore, you'll be sitting at a red light and the other traffic will be moving through the intersection completing a left-hand turn. Often--but not always--if there is a left turning lane, there will be an advanced green. But this isn't a hard and fast rule. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. So just to clarify (tell me if I’m wrong anywhere): At a yield sign you go slowly and check oncoming traffic without stopping unless someone is coming. At a red light you stop and wait for everything else to pass before turning. At a red light no turn sign you don’t turn (for obvious reasons). At a green light you have right of way on a RIGHT turn and don’t need to check traffic. At a green light on a LEFT turn you have to yield for incoming people.

You have the right-of-way at an intersection if "said" intersection is clear, and only if said intersection is clear. Remember, the right-of-way is always given, it is never taken. In other words, if someone else is insisting that s/he is going to go, you'll have to give them the right-of-way, otherwise you're going to risk a crash. Turning right from a two lane road (two lane in each direction) onto another two lane road. I have a red light and to apposing traffic has an advanced green. Should I proceed into the right lane and assume the car with the advanced green will turn into the left lane or do I have to give the right of way to the traffic with the advanced green.
Your question is somewhat similar to the one I have, but I noticed that you have not received a reply yet. I have the advanced green left turn arrow. The traffic across from me has the red light. I'm turning onto a two lane road, but I need to turn into the right lane closest to the curb in order to make the next right turn 10 feet ahead. The car opposite me turns right at the same time as I'm turning left on my advanced green arrow. We almost sideswipe each other. I want to blow, but I don't know who's wrong. This has happened to me twice at this intersection, so I call the police department. The officer said that the other car can turn right on red as long as they enter the lane closest to them even if I have a dedicated, advanced green arrow to turn left onto a two lane road. I didn't agree with this because I believe that green arrow trumps red light, but I had no code or ordinance to prove my point. Is the officer correct?

good information. at 4 way intersections always gotta make sure to look to the left for people coming straight, look ahead for people turning left, and look right for people u turning
This is awesome, I was worried about driving by myself for the first time today so started brushing up on driving the right of way. This video helped a lot and the fact I live in Vernon too its as if I had a one on one lesson from an instructor in Vernon 😆
When turning right into a 3 lane road, if there are cars coming in the two left lanes but not the right lane you're turning into can you still go or have to wait for all 3 lanes to be cleared?
Any time there is no conflicting traffic, you can proceed after stopping when right-on-red is allowed. If the vehicles entering the destination road, are all entering other lanes, they are not conflicting traffic, and you can proceed.
1:39 how u know if the car turning left is going to go. I had an automatic fail on my driving test because I went right when the car opposite side went but I thought he wasn’t going to go because it has been 3 seconds and he hasn’t moved.

watched this couple days ago, and take the test today. And I failed, instead of doing a full stop, I did a rolling stop on the red light. I thought it would be OK to do it since I'm turning right. I guess I'm wrong because that's what the examiner comment about me. Hopefully next time I'll got it right, and make sure not to forget it.

One of my biggest struggles with right turns is I have a hard time figuring out how much I should turn the steering wheel to make sure the turn is executed properly so that I stay in my lane for the whole turn without crossing yellow lines or grazing the curb. Any tips for that?

Most of the time you only get an advanced green at a complex intersection. Another sign is a line of left turning cars, and they're just going. Before turning right make sure you come to a complete stop and if it permits you to turn proceed, you do not need too if you wish not too and wait for the light to turn green. I know some places they do not allow you to turn right on red check your traffic laws!! All the best- good luck
Anytime I am outside California I never turn on red, because not all US states allow it. I know that New York does not permit right turns on red, which does annoy a lot of those from out of state, and the Canadian province of Quebec does not allow right on red. The idea of allowing right on red was cooked up by enviromentalists as a gas saving anti-pollution measure in the 1970s.

Old school here, to me it is weird to see a video like this with people posting about driving, people having issues about doing something so simple. The first time I drove a car I just did it and it was a stick. For those who do not know what that is and I'm sure some of you don't because you actually have to watch a video on how to turn right on red. A stick is a car with a Manuel transmission, you have to manually push in a clutch with your foot and change the gears in the transmission by hand with a stick shift that is between the front seats, it is not automatic. Growing up we did not have drivers ed or a class to take, so many people I grew up with just got in their parent's car and drove, it's like it came natural to us. When I turned 16, I got my permit, a little time later I went and took my road test in that stick shift and passed no problem, I aced it because driving is not rocket science. Maybe all of this comes from how life was for me and my friends; we all grew up around cars, cars from the 50's, 60,s and my teenage years of the 70's. We grew up working on cars at an early age, we drove go carts and riding lawnmowers and tractors we watched our parents when they drove, we did not have cell phones to put our faces in during trips. We watched them drive, we watched how they changed gears for years so when I did it, I just did it, that could also be because of riding dirt bikes and changing gears when I was a kid, I understood it. To me it is sad to see a video like this, to hear about people just getting a permit in there 30's, to hear about people having issues driving, I do not get it. In these times there are Men that do not even know how a car works, they do not even know how to change a tire, how to change the oil or even where to put the oil or the water, to me that is embarrassing and sad to see how this world is changing for the worse. The title of this video is how to turn right at a redlight, that in itself is sad that people actually need to watch a video on something that is so simple. I got my permit when I was 16 in 1978, at that time turning right on red was allowed, I did not need instruction, I did not need a video or class, I did not have to take a test about turning right on red. If you cannot fathom the thought, just think about it, are you so lost that you cannot turn on your right blinker, pull up to the redlight, stop, look in all directions, if it is clear make that right hand turn on red, you actually need to watch a video, is that not sad to you. Oh my god I do not know if I can do it, it's so hard and scary, I'm sitting here at this red light to make a right turn, it's clear and I'm just sitting here, what do I do, I cannot figure it out because there is too much involved, I do not know if I can look to make sure there are no cars, then push the gas and turn the wheel right, that is to many things put on me all at once, I cannot multi task, I need my ADD, Bi-Polar meds.
The only thing that confuses me is who I need to watch out for when turning right. For example the light is red for me and the oncoming vehicles stop because they have a red, but how am I supposed to know the vehicles in front of me have a protected left?
That happened to me. The guy turning Right turned right into me causing me to be missing chunk of bone out of my neck. Now I have panic attacks and still almost get hit. So now I blare my horn every time I have a left green arrow.
Cheryl Jewett I just get confused because of this one specific area. When you get there and it turns red the people to the right of me turn left and then I’m able to go, however sometimes people across from me have a protected green so I wouldn’t be able to go. The problem is I don’t know at which point they get there arrow.
i have my test on friday in california and the turn at 4:08 scares me because the law here is to go into the bike lane before dotted lines but i've heard that's unsafe for traffic if there's cars stopped in front of you. or you could clip the car on the left

Hey sir! I’m not sure if you’re still able to answer my question but what if you’re going to turn right on a red but the other side of the intersection is making a left. Do we wait for all the cars that are on the other side of the intersection to turn left and then proceed or can we still turn at the same as them as long as we go in the first lane? Sorry if my question is a bit confusing I can’t really explain it well😅
If there is a continuous stream of cars turning left in to the lane to which you'd like to turn right, you have last priority to turn. You wait until it is completely clear, and you can complete your turn without interfering with any of the left turners. You have last priority when turning right on red. Treat it as a stop sign, and proceed only when there is no conflicting traffic of any kind, or when other traffic has gestured to tell you to go. If the next left turner is way behind a stream of straight travelers, and there's plenty of gap time for you to turn right on red, go for it. No need to wait for every possible left turner. Same is true if the left turners don't even have a destination in your lane, and you can turn right without any conflict. There's a convention for which lane the left turners are supposed to use as their destination, based on which lane they used for initiating the turn.

Thank you for this. I have a few questions though with regards to oncoming traffic: how do we know if the oncoming traffic has an advanced green? What if they do not indicate their intent to turn left? Also, with regards to through traffic, how to tell if their light turned red other than them stopping? What to do if they don't indicate? Good instruction. Nearly had a guy hit me making a right turn at a red light (his red light), while I had the green left arrow. After he sped through his turn and ahead of me, he honked his horn and yelled out his window as to suggest that I should have yielded for him. I may just start making magnetic cards with websites on safe and correct driving laws/right of way and throw them at these bad drivers.
i took my driving test today (im from cali) and i failed because i turned on red. she said it was a critical error and would have been fine if it was at least yellow. there was no “no turn on red sign” and there were no people. im retaking it tomorrow in a different location. is waiting until its green wrong? or should i turn right on red?

I really love watching your driving tips videos. They are very helpful. My road test is in two weeks, so I'm in the extreme practice mode right now, haha. I always dread right turns on red lights. Even though I'm a pretty good driver already, sometimes I fail with my timing on red light right turns. I see no cross traffic and think that no one comes from up front, but then as soon as I move into the intersection, the cars from the opposite side start turning left. I think my reaction time is still just quite slow, so I'm making sure I get lots of practice on these specifically. I'm in California, so I really don't know what it's like in Canada, but can you still choose not to make a right turn on red if you don't feel confident? Some RU-vid instructors say that it's completely okay to not turn if you don't feel you want to do it.

Yes as some red light turns are not allowed as the view is obstructed I can not blindly follow other drivers as a sign says no turning on this red light
Wow, thank you so much for making these videos! They've helped me a ton, and no doubt have helped many thousands of other people as well. If you have a sec, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about making a left turn from a side road onto a main road (and across multiple lanes of traffic) vs. making a right turn followed by a subsequent U-turn. Given the often unpredictable and sometimes unsafe/illegal driving on the road from other drivers, coupled with busy traffic times -- do you think a right turn followed by a subsequent U-turn might be a safer/better option in some scenarios? Can you explain how to yield on right turn yield islands in a commercial vehicle?? Let’s say it’s a red light and you are turning right in a semi on those yield islands. Do you completely stop behind the crosswalk until light turns green or do you stop and go up if you see no pedestrians??

So on the driver test your able to take the turn just stop look for cars and people move up if you can’t see the whole street and if clear but still red you can go?

Don't know why the Brits make such a big deal about Turning Right On Red. Although I'd say most of them never drove in US or Canada. Here in UK i wish we could do it on a left turn. Excellent video.

A friend of mine got a ticket for doing this. I live on the boarder of New York City and Long island. In NYC this is an illegal technique while in Long Island it is allowed. My friend was a block away from the boarder into the Long Island side and the cop didn't give him a break

I know that turning right on red or green is optional. I also know that you can turn right on red or green any time except when there’s a sign that says “no turn on red”. But before I watched this video I had a difficult time figuring out when a driver turning right has the right of way or driver turning left. Now I realize that a driver turning left has the right of way but only if they are in the advance green light and the driver turning right if the driver turning left is on a red light.
I failed my test because I inched up to be able to see the intersection as the last car was moving and then I turned and the examiner said it’s illegal to inch up when there’s movement at an intersection in Massachusetts

You probably mentioned this and I missed it. But MUST you turn on a red light if there is the chance or is it ok to wait until a green light even if others honk at you? I'm a tourist driving in the US.

As a driver of a city bus..I make a complete stop..at red light. Advanced green has not tripped for left turn at intersection..As I commit to right turn curb lane, advanced green trips and the car turns left thinking I am taking lane one against curb but in fact I need lane two because of the size of my commercial vehicle..Car driver sits blasting his horn..This happens once in a blue moon. But maybe something you could share with your viewers.
If turning on a 2 road that has two lanes it is legal to turn into the closest lane to you the left tur is supposed to turn to the lane closest to them. Be very careful tho they do have right of way and may turn to the wrong lane especially if it is a larger vehicle. If there is contact between the two the turn on red will be at fault.
There are 5 lanes, 5 lights. 3 left turn lanes and 2 right turns. There is a no right on red sign to the right of the light nearest the left turn. Does that apply to both right turn lanes or just the outside lane. My understanding is that the sign will be to the right of the light it applies to. Is this correct?
