James P hahaha true.. Another method is cooking salty water and have a piece of plastic paper on top of that. With a bucket/bottle or anything self made to hold water to catch the condense!

@@firepower7017 lmao you don't season your salmon with salt and pepper? Saltwater fish doesn't mean they are full of salt. I can't believe somebody is this stupid.
Hao Liu Again saltwater salmon already have salt. I tend to not add not much salt or else it ruin the fish entirely. Also how I eat salmon is add a little bit of salt, rub mayo across the salmon and powder it with paprika, next I add lemons and bake it.
Hao Liu But paprika has salt in it and I generally skip adding it. Edit: I generally skip just adding salt. I have a low sodium diet, I mean in my culture we eat crickets so I can see why you called me a dummy but that can be just coincidental
Note: salt is also used as a preservation method for foods, and is a biproduct of distillation. Good thing to keep in mind if doing anything similar to this in a survival situation
I get the logic, but the leftover slurry is more than just salt - as pointed out above. It's basically a brine full of contaminates that could make you sick. I wouldn't use it for anything food related.
@Sunny bob Quackers they used the same salt we use from salt mines today. It might have still had a few contaminates, but it wasn't nearly as problematic as the stuff that can be found in sea water.
@Sunny bob Quackers I am not sure what you mean. Distilling has been around since at least 1200BC. Maybe even before that. The oldest evidence of it is 1200BC.
Good video. Just one tip though: heat the water close to boil before mating it with another bottle and any petroleum volatiles, alcohol, or other active contaminates will evaporate before the water does.
i bought a "lifesaver" bottle..cleans dirty water instantly...about 60 bucks...there's gonna be a war soon...every century ever do you think this is the first one we get off...nope
@dylans voice It's chemistry. 😊 You know how rubbing alcohol evaporates really quickly, but water can take a while? Well, that's because its boiling point is lower than water (82º C versus 100º C). Since that's how most flammable solvents are, they'll evaporate off before the water reaches a boil.
You can then do partial destilation of that, get some kerosene, gasoline and diesel build a combustion engine, build a raft and drive off into the distance

It takes about a gallon of water in a 24 hour cycle to keep a human male healthy. If one was lost on an island with two beer bottles and an ocean... one is fucked. It is good information to have, but futile in reality.
@@mmercier0921 Actually humans get much of our water intake from food so as long as you have a food source, two beer bottles and an ocean would be enough to keep you alive for quite some time.
Definitely something that needs to be taught in school. Give it a few decades. The way the world is going, we'll probably be there before long. Either that, or google takes over the world. #apocalypsehumor 🤷♂️
They didn't really teach many useful things in school. I think school is more about training people to be good worker drones or ready for prison. I think that if they taught useful things vs stuff most won't ever need / won't remember, people might pay attention and could learn how to be self sufficient.
coming from a 27 yr old, I wasn't taught that either but movies and TV taught me a lot more than school honestly 😅 And I don't think school is where you learn it anyway. maybe boyscotts and bootcamp
@@AlyxAesthetics You mean Republicans don't like Americans being self-sufficient with how much they've contributed to wealth inequality and state oppression. You want an educated populace, you vote blue.
The prospect of having other things in the water (like gassoline or oil) is why you should start with the heated bottle open to atmosphere until the water is at a good boil. Let lighter boiling materials out without capturing them in the recieving bottle. Before you connect the bottles, have some vapor condense on the outside of the cool bottle, and give it a sniff or taste to make sure it is water. Then, connect the bottles. Also, whenever you distill water, leave about 10% in the heated bottle. There can also be stuff you don't want that has a higher boiling point than water. Throw that out and start fresh.
That makes sense. I'm also wondering if the salt water bottle could be replaced entirely by a larger container, though one would have to get creative in connecting a bottle to the container.
I really appreciate you demonstrating this process. I was once at the mercy of the Mariana Trench when I was stationed in Guam while in the Navy. Me and a buddy got drunk on my 18 foot boat and decided to anchor off the reef. When we woke up I was in the shipping channel. I fired a Flare gun at Japanese Airliner and they radioed my position to the Authorities whom picked us up. We were drinking the melted ice from the beer cooler. This would have been a useful Hack for us. We had plenty of empty beer bottles. Thanks again Sailor Steve out.

DastiRDTV In a very long survival period you could even make a hotter fire and manipulate bottles so that you could upgrade the frequency of refilling.
Angle distillary bottle upwards to trap steam that would otherwise be stuck by the lip when it’s flat. About 5 degree tilt should do, and you can add more water as well.
If you were to do this, I'd suggest refilling the bottle in series. You'd have to let the warm bottles cool off before refilling it with cold water to reduce thermal shock. So you could do something where two bottles are distilling while the third one is off cooling. Then when the next bottle is done, refill the now cool bottle and place it back in and remove the empty one from the cycle to cool off, and repeat.
First, youtube recommended a video about dozen of methods to set fire, then - how to cook meat and keep it in hot countries, now - this. Seems like 2021 would be intense
The biggest potential problem is that if your source water is contaminated with something that has a lower boiling point than water then this specific technique will need to be modified. What you will have to do is wait until after the water has started boiling before you set up the second bottle to receive the steam from the first.
Just remember to pour the highly concentrated saltwater into a container to allow further evaporation to the crystaline salt you will need for survival and food preservation! Great video... subscribed already!
It is also possible to use just a bottle and one of those trays. Bottle will have same purpose as in this video, metal tray will be the cold surface for condensation (placed over neck of the bottle upside down at angle with one corner being the lowest point). Water will condensate in the tray and trickle down. All you have to do is use third vessel which can be anything including a large leaf to catch it (the third vessel can be literally anything water tight with depression including you)
In the end of the video, what the bird did was very intelligent. He played with your hair, then waited on a response from you. When you laughed, the bird then laughed too. That was the best part. Very entertaining. Ha ha ha :))
The day you are in a survival situation where you need 2 glass bottles on the beach is the day you will not find 2 glass bottles on a beach next to the ocean
It would remove a lot of the bad stuff from pee, but seeing as how stinky pee is when heated that's a sign that there are a lot of chemicals that will evaporate from it and distill with the fresh water. It would be better for you than drinking it straight, but I'd rather avoid trying it.
I'm mostly concerned about the nitrogen in your pee, and whether heating it would accelerate it's conversion to ammonia, which would probably distill over.
IF YOU Run Demographics study on this channel. ILL bet youll find it a bit high for star trekies Next Gen. Types fans.base, but, most likely low for the Clint Eastwood .. spaghetti western types , which is odd they would be the ones in th the situation to be using this .
And yes you. Can distille urine like a Marine! Great video, I'm really impressed with your wonderfully simple yet non insulating way of teaching. Everyone can learn something from you & your science.
Refill the source bottle *before* it goes dry or it'll get too hot and risk breaking. Also, if you can find bottles with different neck/opening sizes, you can plug one into the other and have better recovery (i.e. less gets lost from where they meet in your set up)
Assuming you have a knife (and who doesn't have a pocket knife all the time?), with a little work and a piece of a small tree branch you can make a wooden adapter to provide a snug fit between the bottles. If you're lucky enough to have bamboo, that's even easier. This is the basic system. Adapt it to fit, especially if you need it for longer periods during which you'll probably be able to find/fashion more materials.
Have to try this! Prepping is a way of life. Paying rent is oppression. Btw Your eyebrows will get you through the casting process of Days of our lives in the blink of an eye! Great upload! Thx man!
Prepping is great. I own a house, but paying rent isn't oppression. It's a choice to pay rent. It's convenience. And too many people rely entirely on convenient things. Like fast food for example. What if you never had fast food? Half of the people my age can't even make grilled cheese.
You are amazing. Best science guy on youtube! 1 thing though to add to this that is also quite important. Put one small scoop/splash of the salt water back into your distilled water because if you drink 100% mineral free water, you can deplete your body of minerals causing all sorts of issues. Especially over long time consumption. Russian explorers to Antarctica suffered this fate, all loosing all their teeth over time
This can actually be done with plastic bottles in a pinch, however the plastic that is not in contact with water cannot be exposed to high temperatures, which make it finicky. It is more suited to distiliation through a tube or pipe of some sort.
Great video! Question: can you find something to connect the two bottles like steel tubing or something so that they can both stand upright? I figure the vapor could still travel through and down to the empty. I’ve never tried this but would the glass break even if you still used sand to surround the heat evenly?
That would work and is often used to distill liquid. It helps if you tie a wet rag just after the apex of the tubing so the steam condenses back into a liquid and falls into the second bottle a little quicker.
Can we redo this video with an interesting speaker or a non hipster? I need my survival men gritty, or comedic. I'm just yanking yer yarbles chief! Great job
NightHawkInLight mate, there's TWO (2) salt lakes in Michigan, they're kinda small tho so not knowing's perhaps forgivable. "Salt Lake"(@ 46.331941, -84.993095) and "Little Salt Lake" (@ 46.335361, -84.997605). Or maybe, don't tell me these aren't actually salty? Maybe you could check?
I'd guess it's the same sort of salt lake like the one in Minnesota. 1/3 as salty as ocean water or there abouts. That one's simply named "Salt Lake" located on the border to and slightly poking into South Dakota (@ 44.965813, -96.446572). This one I know of thanks to "How To Make Everything". He mentions it in his "Salt Flats and Salt Lakes" vid at 5min. Alas can't easily check any of them myself , there's a -salt lake- atlantic puddle in the way.

( I was a Drill Sargeant for 7 yrs in the Army & a 55B Ammo/explosives for another 7 yrs.) Another way to distill water: Ahead of time drill the middle part of the caps of plastic bottles out & crazy glue the tops together. Screw the tops on the bottles & put in your back pack. (Make 1 or more sets of 2 bottles it's up to you how many you make) Put some say sea water (or dirty as in muddy not with other chemicals or oils in the water) in one bottle then screw the bottles together. Put the sea water bottle lower on the ground & the empty bottle have up alittle higher & you can use the sun to heat up the sea water bottle. OR If you have a sandwich or some kind of plastic bag fill it with water then turn on it's side, empty water till you see a triangle of water in the bag & gently twist the bag to make as close to a ball without breaking the bag & tie it off. To speed up heating the salt water bottle hold the bag over the bottle & it will be like a magnifier & heat your water. If you take some bark off a stick or dead tree stump & grind that bark with a stone & save it on another piece of bark. Have gathered some dry grass & small thin twigs & stuff to fuel a fire ahead of time. Take your powered bark & sprinkle some on the bigger piece of bark & put your bag of water ( you make it like instructions up above) over the powdered bark & just slowly add more powdered bark as you see alittle smoke, put alittle toilet paper strips on it & as it begins to burn add alittle bundle of grass you can put your smoking bark in & lightly blow on it & it will start a fire, use your twigs then bigger sticks ect. A fire with no matches. If you have no spare water you can use urine. Put your pee in the bag & that works fine too.

One way you could speed up this process is having a third bottle so you don’t have to wait for the first bottle to cool off before using it again or risk shattering it by refilling it too quickly. Or so I would imagine.
Thanks a lot I never thought of such a technique, that can really save life's latter this century when fresh water becomes increasingly difficult to obtain
This should be possible using 2 coconut shells (whole, drained thu the eyes) or 2 big hollow bamboo sections with a bamboo pipe between them. 2 flat stones could be angled together to make the sand tray over fire for the heated one. The cold one on Just a big sand pile.
