How to TURN the STEERING WHEEL❓ | VERY SIMPLE | New Driver Tips | Toronto Drivers

In this Driving Tutorial video I show you how to steer a car properly using the push and pull method. In the previous video, I showed you how to steer using the hand over hand method. Since that method is not used in all the countries, I am demonstrating the push pull method.
During the road test, the examiner looks for the following things with respect to steering:
1. Are you in control of the car?
2. Is the car going where you want it to go? and
3. Are you safely in control of the steering wheel?
Being able to steer your car properly is a crucial part of being a safe driver. You must be able to precisely steer your car around any bend you come across while staying in the correct road position. So watch the steering techniques through the end and let me know how you found the video. Cheers!

Hi there, sir! I just have a car but don't have any background in driving a 4-wheel car. So one of my strategies to keep my competence up is to look for videos like these. It called my attention over the 3 methods you have recommended. Because I am using those 3 already, by just my feeling of comfort. Actually I used the feeding the hand for over 90% of my driving because I feel like very comfortable and safe because I never remove my hands that much from the steering wheel compared with the hand over hand. I'm really impressed with the way you explain and demonstrate as simple as possible those techniques. Thanks for sharing your expertise sir! Looking forward on your upcoming videos!

👩👉Been driving for years ...I wouldn't say I love it . I've ONLY just been using the ''hand over hand '' method and I must admit, it FEELS SO MUCH BETTER .👉🙆‍♀️ ..... I USE to do the second one You mentioned . I felt like I was shuffling around the corners and it just felt tight ... I was going to go to the mechanics to see if there was something wrong with my wheel but after doing ''hand over hand '' I DON'T think I'll bother going to the mechanics. .. ... SO glad I came across your video on this topic. 🤗🤗

4:14 because if u got into accident and your hand placement is in cross position, the impact of airbag will hit your cross hand then your face so it might broke your hands and cause more damage in your face.

Interesting video. I am also a driving instructor, 38 years experience. Let me add a couple things. Regarding hand-over-hand steering, one of the reasons it is frowned on in some areas is the possibility of having your arms crossed in front of the airbag. If the airbag deploys, the driver may be seriously injured. Push-pull is generally better, although it must be practiced to gain competence. Reaching one hand inside the steering wheel to turn is, as noted in the video, a really bad idea. One of the prime reasons for not doing so is correctly noted in the video. You can only turn the wheel a certain amount, then must remove your hand from inside the wheel to continue to turn. Two further reasons are as follows: First, if you are turning left, for example, and a hazardous situation requires you to turn sharply right, you cannot do so without pulling your hand out of the wheel first, slowing down your ability to react quickly. Second, imagine your hand is gripping the inside of the wheel as you prepare to turn. Now imagine the air bag deploying. You'd likely break your knuckles, break your wrist, then punch yourself in the face with the speed of the air bag deployment. Never steer from the inside of the wheel or reach through the wheel.

This is a good video. I am learning to drive and I struggle with the wide turns that you don't have to signal for, like the curves in the neighborhoods. These are different from the 90 degree ones at intersection. Like you said in this video, you're supposed to do the push and pull method for that and not hand over hand but I struggle with that and end up overturning and then struggle to straighten the wheel. Can you do a video, or do you have a video on how to steer push and pull for the wide turns?

From your video, I think 'the feeding-the-hand' method is the best. You seem more comfortable with it. In the UK, the hand-over-hand method isn't recommended but you won't fail for doing it once in a while. I notice I do it when turning and I switch within seconds.

Also, regarding the 9 & 3 steering position, lots of cars have the steering wheel spokes at exactly 9 & 3. Clearly drivers must go above the spokes to correctly control the wheel.
@neuideas
@neuideas 3 года назад
I very much prefer the two-spoke design, with the two spokes angled down to land at 4 and 8. Too many cars use the three-spoke design, anchored at 3,6, and 9. Pretty dumb, in my opinion. I wrap my fingers around the wheel, while my thumbs tend to simply sit on the front face of the wheel, or sometimes wrap around the inner part of the wheel. In everyday driving, my hand position changes based upon comfort and driving need/usefulness. Sometimes, I'm close to 3 and 9; other times I have the left hand at 1 or 11 (while my right hand is on the shifter or on my lap); still other times I have my right hand at 4 or 5, or I have my left hand at 7 or 8. If I'm doing a sharp turn, I may have one hand at or near 6, passing off to the other hand at 12. I do not palm the wheel. When I need to control the wheel more, I have both hands on the wheel, but when things are more relaxed, or I need to shift, I only have one on the wheel. I have steered with my knees before, but not recently. I have also steered with my hands in my lap and my thumbs on the face of the wheel, also not recently. I don't recommend either, but it was fun at the time. Bottom line, there is no hand position which is ideal for every circumstance (9 and 3 is good for most, though). Sometimes, you just need to figure it out on the fly.

Isn't hand-over-hand dangerous because your arms are constantly in front of the air bag? It seems to me that if 10 and 2 is dangerous because your hands are closer to the airbag as you're driving, then hand over hand would cause the same issue. The second method you mentioned (feeding the wheel, also called shuffle steering) is actually the best method for steering, when done properly, because your arms never come in front of the air bag, your arms are never crossed, and you have full range of motion with the wheel, meaning you always have full control from lock to lock. In addition to that, you can smooth out your steering much more with this method over hand-over-hand. I also think a hand position of 8 and 4 is better for control and comfort than 9 and 3.

I think using hand over hand might break your arm if airbag inflates. That's what you mentioned in the first few minutes in this video

I passed 30 years ago but hand over hand wasnt acceptable in the UK back then. We were instructed to feed the wheel.

Hello Any suggestion for buying a used car for new driver in Canada?

I watched your video a few times in prep for a road test. I used hand over hand and failed as a result, plz note I live in BC. The assessor noted hand over hand was not consider safe as it obstructs the air bag. On wider turns I use the pull through and was failed for that as well. I'm almost at a loss what to do. The final point the put me over to fail was not stopping at the appropriate place at a stop sign( I stop approx 1-2 from the stop line) I was advised to stop approx half a car length from the stop line before proceeding to a second stop once passed the line to see past the high snow banks. I will continue to practice my driving skills but am at a loss when it comes to turning properly and safely.
