Wrote the the following down in your exact words so I can tell it to everyone in the future: Dogs are very intuitive creatures with their owners, And they feel or they know more importantly when you don’t know What you’re doing, or you don’t know how to control them. So when they’re on the leash and they’re bouncing all over the place They’re jumping on people, They are going to become very insecure because that’s not in their nature. from day one When they’re born, mom is always taking care of them. It’s what they need as they grow.

I realized how important “break” was when I was training my boy, I said “touch” and he puts his front feet up on this little stool, I waited for eye contact, and said “yes,” rewarded, then I turned around and was thinking about what to do next, and I turn around and he’s still there, looking at me with his front feet on the stool..! I thought..wow..I’m really dumb! I re rewarded for such a good boy..

I love this so much. I've tried to explain this concept so many times in regards to my neurotic, smart, fast, headstrong, greyhound x bull terrier... but so many people just harp on about how a 'Good' dog owner wouldn't resort to an e collar. I'm gonna bookmark this video, it's fantastic. Thanks!! 😊

Great video Thomas. I agree that once a command is given it shouldn't be repeated over and over. You nailed that in this video. I hate hearing owners say "sit, sit sit sit, come on sit, fido sit, come one fido sit." My pups have learned this (mostly) but when the cat walks by (squirrel) I tend to have to stand right up to their bodies and stare in their face before they look at me and sit. Still didn't have to repeat myself though.

Hello, Great video, learning things all the time watching your videos. My 7.5 month old German Shepherd Modi walks in front of me on walks but doesn't pull unless there's a dog approaching and like in the video doesn't listen to me in these circumstances, would you advise making him sit and wait when this happens? Thank you in advance for your reply. Kind regards Joanne 🐺

It’s so easy on explaining that.. but this obedience thing. My dog is very well aware of sit/heel/down/stay. In places where is no distractions, it working as a charm. Also it working when is there distraction and the food. But then I remove food and using slip collar, to correct. But it ends up that I have to correct a dog each step(often with heel command, dog just start run forward).. which after 20mins of constant “hey,hey” and poping the collar start to make my dog frustrated.. and I really don’t know how to overcome that. I still appreciate dog “good boy” in seconds he doing that right. But then I need to correct again. And we not moving at this point :( please advise

I have a 8 week GSD, he's super duper nervous about everything, can't go 5ft' without him whining that you're not orbiting him. He will not go outside for walk. Is this just normal for a baby GSD?
@ABCdogtraining802
@ABCdogtraining802 4 года назад
Its not abnormal but atypical at that age.....build its confidence up through hand feeding, teach yes/no while feeding and throw a party to celebrate ALL positives!! Do this inside and play like hell!! Work on obedience after yes/no....heel/crate train are vital....I just posted a couple videos that may help you and Tom is the king, find his somewhere!!
@david-Davidson
@david-Davidson 4 года назад
@@ABCdogtraining802 Thanks for the reply, he's now 2 months old (obviously). It's clear that he's extra nervous as a personality, when I take him on walks he's constantly trying to dart back home, whining, terrified of other dogs. He's better at being alone but still whines even in the house if he's in another room... It's going to be a slow process but I'm learning his behavior and adjust how I approach it. We make small strides each day, lots of work but he's worth it all! No bad dogs!

This is an extremely difficult concept for me to replicate. I absolutely understand the compliance produces the reward not the reward produces the compliance part. In practise however i struggle. My GSD pup seems to blank me when i dont have food. Im trying to work on our relationship as you suggested but i also want to get her started on understanding the commands. Theyre very clever and your videos are extremely useful to me in understanding what i am doing wrong. Just now i sat with her and just stroked her and she seemed pretty content. Im hoping just being around her and expecting nothing from her will help build that bond people talk about. As of yet i dont think its there but over time im hoping it will come

Do you have a specific slip/prong collar you use? How do I know what size collar to get? My GSD tends to slip out of his collar.

Thanks Tom! May I ask... When going for a walk with an little-trained dog, should I always alternate work (with verbal and food reward casually, meaning once compliments only, than compliments+food when he complies and a correction on the leash if and when he does not comply) and break (as you mean it=disengage comand) or always is too stressful? 2- If it is correct to always train the guy on every walk, how should a working "session" last before giving a break Time-out?! Like 5' work and 5' break or 20+20 or?! Thanks a lot and congrats for your outstanding work! (I'm only verbally rewarding you, sorry! 😉)

Hey Tom,quick question....I am ok to use a break command if I see my dog is about to break my last command? Dogs in a sit stay, I walk away turn and see he's about to break that stay, can I break so that were still ending in an upbeat note and everything is cool? With my younger dog starting basics I know they won't hold that last command very long so if I get say 10 seconds of the sit when I've walked away, I'll turn and say break! I just try to increase the sit command with my walking away incrementally longer. As a side note Isana won the longest sit command in her puppy obedience class and I had to pull out the tennis ball to get her to break, but hey, from there out the instructor called her that cheating German shepherd. Lmao. Why? Cause she and mamma did their weekly homework 😁. But, can I break command before they break my last command on their own? Good or no good?

Informative video. So to understand better, when you start training a new position, do you use leash pressure to guide the dog into position and eventually reward instead of luring the dog with food first?

Is there a specific reason why you deal with adult dogs specifically? We need some good teachers for pups as well brother.
@jeanninebastian7478

ChefvEto I think he deals with adults more so because that's where a lot of dog owners need help. Training a puppy from scratch is a lot easier than reversing years of learned bad behavior.

I’m a Disabled Veteran 100 % Service Connected. I have a rescue Vizsla 1 1/2 year old who was abused from what I was told. He is fear aggressive. I’ve been working with him on the issue by socializing him. This video fits him to a T as far as how he acts with commands. He is disassociated to me 30-40 percent of the time and is food driven. I’ve had him 3 weeks and I am trying to build that relationship. Are you ever in Washington State? He is such a loving dog when I can get him relaxed. He is also really smart and is vindictive when you don’t do what he wants. If you don’t do what he wants he will leave your side in the house and create an issue just to get a response. Do you ever Skype call people or is there any help you can give me. He comes when he is off leash 99% of the time but sometimes he gets to you and then says nope I’m going to be a puppy again and do what I want. The rescue said he was food driven. I see that he is. Sometimes the only way I can get him to comply is by saying treat. Once he Complies with that command I give him lots of good boys and praise and sometimes a treat. I don’t like food driven. Can you help me ?
