Understanding your labs in menopause and perimenopause can be extremely complicated. In this video, I try and break this down and make it as simple to understand as possible. You don't need a long laundry list of labs - just a few can help you and your doctor understand your menopause transition better. And don't forget to journal and track!

So helpful. I missed my period for the first time this month and my doctors office said that labs wouldn’t be helpful at this point. When do you usually recommend drawing labs?
@heatherhirschMD
@heatherhirschMD 4 года назад
It really depends. I would start with journaling and drawing labs when you are developing symptoms that you are thinking about treating.

Thank you for this. I had a light spotting on the 13th month after last period. Fsh was 50 and estradiol 78, so confusing had tons of tests to rule out issues with thickening lining etc all clear. Your approach is the whole person which I love!

My Dr checked progesterone and I do think this was helpful. At day 18 in my cycle my estradiol was 81 but my progesterone was 0.2. I believe this is significant in understanding the symptoms that I’ve been having which some Drs in functional medicine would interpret as “estrogen dominance” in perimenopause. I know this might be a controversial topic but this makes sense to me. I am 48 1/2 yrs old and still cycling monthly but with many perimenopausal symptoms such as insomnia, weight gain, hair loss, low energy, mood swings, hot flushes at night (more recently).

Thank you for this video! I'm in perimenopause and my FSH is 32 and I've too many symptoms. My prolactin is 34 and I don't know if i should attribute my symptoms to perimenopause, high prolactin or adrenal fatigue. I don't know what's happening :(

I have a question for you. Can DHEA, Or Vitex increase estradiol? My FSH came back as 62, my estradiol came back as 290. I am 54, I had a partial hysterectomy at 40. I feel like I’m menopausal.

Is there a way to tell if you are in menopause when you are still taking birth control pills? I have been on the pill for years, but have experienced some symptoms (hot flashes, weight gain, brain fog, etc etc). The labs that were just done show estradiol of 6.36 FSH of 0.7, LH 0.2 and prolactin 26.6. Is it even possible to take any of these numbers as true since I am still on the pill, or to tell if I am in menopause?

Unsure if you will see this as it’s an older post but I came across your channel in researching. I am 65, total hysterectomy at age 27, have been on estrogen since then, yes I realize this is a long time. I recently requested my estrogen to be checked. It came back 1294.8 I thought it had to be a mistake but was assured it was not. Would appreciate your thoughts. If I were your patient going forward what other tests you might do. Thank you, Bethanna

My fsh levels are 36. I am 45yrs old and my periods are usually every 25-28 days although most recently they have been going longer 32 days apart. My Dr said this is concerning because I shouldn't be having regular periods. They last about 2-3 days in duration with minimal cramps. Any advice? He is setting up a ultra sound and all sorts of tests. I'm really scared.

Hi, I am confused. I am 49 almost 50. Last period January 2022. I had blood work last week FSH 44.1 and Estradiol 38. So am in premenopausal ? My doctor mentioned hormone therapy. Ugh Any insight would be great. Thank you for your video.

Hi heather. On what day of period should you check fsh level to check If it is >35. I had my blood test done on day 4. My estrogen level was only 23 but my fsh was 12.3. I feel like it is not matching up for estrogen level to be that low and fsh to be low still. Am I still perimenopausal or sth else going on?

Can periods just stop dead from being regular rather than having months or years of irregularity before the final period ? Thank you.

This can absolutely happen. I often talk a lot about women having a prolonged perimenopause but some women will just simply stop having periods the next month and forever yonder.

Freaked out a bit because my level was 98. I’ve been having irregular periods for quite some time, but workout heavily and had attributed the inconsistencies to that. I has a few hot flashes a few years ago, but have now having them regularly at night. Just had my blood drawn today and just got a message with my results (at 1am online)- I’m sure my doctor will call me tomorrow.

@@MsKati30 please report back if you get anymore advice from your doctor. Mine seems a bit clueless. I've been doing OMAD for about 4 years now. My doctor didn't take any other tests. He just gave me triamcinolone acetonide ointment 0.1 percent. He said to use it 2x a day. I can only use it one because it burns 😬. It is helping with nipple pain I was having stabbing tingly feeling.

Hi! A couple months ago I asked you a question an you responded for which I was very grateful. I had bloodwork down again by my gynecologist an he said I was definitely well into menopause. He said my estrogen was basically non existent. He put me on both progesterone acetate 2.5 mg and estradiol 1 mg. From day 2 to day 7 I felt so amazing it was hard to believe. I spent 3 hours making a playlist of some of my favorite music (haven't listened to music in 7 yrs) I was up an productive for hours which hadn't happened in a decade. I was motivated to take control of my life again. Then after day 7 it went down hill. I know feel worse than before, no motivation to be on top of my vitamins, drinking lemon water etc. My question is, are hormones one size fits all? Or could what I am going thru mean my hormones were balanced in that first week but after that the levels were too high? Not asking for specific advice for me just asking if hormones usually get adjusted once you start them? I put a message into my doctor but probably won't get a response until next week an just want some hope that my only options aren't no hormones or the mg I am currently on. 😀

Perimenopause is more of a clinical diagnosis and is based on lot on symptoms vs. labs

Hey! I'm not an expert but telling by your lab you wouldn't be diagnosed as perimenopausal. I'm going by my own Gyno who I got results from a wk ago. I was diagnosed w/ early signs of menopause because my estrogen is very low, amh very low (almost nonexistent) and fsh too high. A good fsh is under 10 on your 3 day (please get it done on your 3 - 4 day for accuracy) and AMH go by age but shouldn't be lower than 1.9 on average for good ovarian reserve but too high and it is an indication of pcos. I don't know which level is too high being that I didn't have this issue so I didn't ask or research it.
