The Sonicware Liven XFM is a great synth but also has its share of limitations. Here are some workaround solutions for these limitations as well as some hidden features to help unlock its potential:

Extra Tips:
-if not highlighted enough...turning off pitch/envelope locking in the X Engines adds a whole other layer of modulation to tweek with widely variable results. It can also act as a good way to slightly or drastically detune patches, as well as produce many "happy accidents."
-when creating different waveshapes in the section above, the tone knob also has a significant effect on shaping the waveform
-The Log and R.Log LFO waveshapes are great to make unique wavetables in the XLFO engine
-Another multi-effect is the chorus, which adds vibrato/tremolo at high speeds (greater than 60)

There's some genius level tips here, I'll share this to the Facebook group 😁 One of favourite tips is setting the LFO speed to 0, using the random shape and dialing in a tiny bit of LFO to pitch. This adds a little humanisation on a per note basis, great for a bit of analog wonk. Also I like to use the Library mode Tone control like an extra filter, sometimes works anyway

Thanks so much! Yea I think that square wave LFO trick should work on most other synths as well. I also use the tone knob a bunch in the Lib and XLAB modes. The amount of modulation options on the XFM are ridiculous (without even getting into the deep FM editing overlay aha)

Hey dude I just got my third xFM I keep selling and coming back. And I've become fascinated with this unique instrument. I found a lot of your advice very useful especially using the xform to have kick and snare without sound locking. Very smart. I really think the xfm and liven series are so unique , fun to use and versatile I'll be using this for many years. It's capable of beauty and filth! And packs so many features into a cheap little plastic keyboard. I will carry it everywhere! 😂 Thanks a lot this was informative!

Really happy it was helpful! this is the only Liven I have and I think it is the deepest as a pure synth so probably wouldn't have as many tips on the other ones tbh

I love this thing, so many ways to use it. Thanks for the extra ideas! I like to use edit mode for performance instead of making patches, or panning tracks full left and right on different midi channels to have 2 simultaneous usable 2-track synths in one. Wish they could find a way to set the headphone as an adjustable monitor, like if you choose panning and whether to send to just the headphone or just line out, you could have 4 individual mono outs.

Thanks! Yea although you cant sequence when in the deep FM editing mode, its definitely cool to play live while having that many FM editing knobs at your disposal 😊 That panning trick is cool too thanks

i was curious how some of the techniques were executed when i watched a house mix video you made. like stretching patterns, duplicating loops, micro tempo, and polyphony work-around, to use full sounding drum patterns, and transistion loops over them, all internally with the U.I. this helped clear up alot of the mystery. XFM advanced tutorial content, does not show up on youtube much right now. thanks for sharing. the finished track is really good👍

yeah, same here. ive had mine for about that long, only a few months ago figured out the 3 part drum set trick, and how to adjust the loop's individual lenghs on sequences. the more instructional stuff that gets on here, the more users can learn to make content. keeping the instrument relevent. as i learn the xfm, the more useful it turns out. @@DylanFerno

@dustburger2830 100%. It's not the most beginner friendly of the Liven series but it pays off to dive into it. Also I agree, the drum kit preset is definately useful if that's what you're talking about

WOW! There are so many workaround to make XFM sound amazing. Thank you so much for explaining all that bag of tricks. I knew XFM was a deep machine but I have never seen someone actually demonstrating it. Again, I thank you a million. PS; I see you use headphone out to your system. Is that sound better than using line out?

It's awesome to hear how helpful you found this. It's such a deep machine and I feel like I'm still finding out all of its tricks (without even using the deep editing mode) P.S. I don't have a reason for using the headphone out maybe I'll start using the line out and see if it's better thanks!
