Excellent video, thank you for all the help. I have a theme from ThemeForest (Sirius), but it does not have the "Auto-Update" functionality you had mentioned. I was concerned for the integrity of my website if I were to delete and reinstall, but that turned out to be the answer! Again, thanks a lot!

This is exactly what I was looking for. I don't have a premium theme now but the developer said exactly what you said - switch to a new theme, delete their theme, upload the new version and switch back to it. They said it will retain ALL the settings and added custom CSS in the database (whatever that means), and NOTHING will be lost - if I didn't alter the code (whatever that means, again). Also, they said a child theme is not necessary for a normal user who doesn't alter the code. Well, I don't know what altering the code means - for me that and adding custom CSS seems pretty much the same thing. I just want to make sure if I buy it and update it from time to time I will not lose anything because that will be baaad. And another short one: If I install 20 themes to say, delete them, switch to new one, all the settings for all of them will be save in the "database", to be there for future uses? I'm asking because the update process is pretty much like that from what I hear...But I don't know to what extent. Thank you!!

Hey WPCrafter, you're putting out really great content. Keep it up! Really clear, precise and well articulated in your videos. One tip, you might want to try adding your plugs/links to your site/mentioned/refered videos in the youtube video descriptions. For example, in this video you mention that you have a child theme video (which I used) - only problem was I had to go onto your channel and search for it. Would be easier for you and everyone, if you just had a quick link in the description.

Hey WP-Crafter, How does this work if I have a child theme? Would I delete both the parent and child themes and proceed to reinstall the updated version of the parent theme and then create another child theme? Or would I just delete the parent theme? Thanks!

my current version of wordpress is 2.7 and the latest version now is 4.9.8.. is it right to use auto-update. because i have watched one of your video in which you were saying about like its east to go from 3.1 to 3.1.1 but its not easy to go from 3.1.1 to 4.1 or something like that. please help me with this...

I bought Vulcan Business minimalist theme for my wordpress but it never sent any updates for well over 2 years now! Can I still update it? When I go to appearance and Themes there is no update button at all... it's in the upper left corner with all the other free themes available. Yes, I did pay for this theme, a web designer uploaded it to my site! Thanks!!

+Mike Kollin Yes you can, but since it has been so long, I would make sure you have a backup!!! You should be fine though, but some theme developers don't do the greatest job making sure users will not have any issues when updating.

Hey, great video, very helpful. I am having a problem in that when I click delete to delete the theme I want to later update it just won't delete. It stays in my theme area and when I try to install the new one it says the folder already exists. I have tried deleting from my FTP also, to no avail. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Adam, if a theme ( Delicieux v1.02 is what I have), no longer exists, what does one do. It is also causing issues updating to php7.

You are best off changing themes when you have the time to find a new one you like.

You can delete any plug-ins or themes that you are not using and you will no longer be prompted to update them.

Yes it should look the same. If you've purchased that theme, I have a video on how to automatically updated in WordPress. It only works though if you purchased it from Envato.

What the safest way to update a Wordpress site that is using a theme that was last updated three years ago? It seems like the best thing to do is download the original site and start over. Is that the best way? How would you proceed?

Do I have to delete before uploading the new updated theme or can I just upload the updated theme then delete if everything went well?

+MommyShippee Yes you do because if you try to upload the updated version, you will get an error message saying the folder already exists.

you deleted the theme. from where on your computer did you get the updated version? perhaps you could explain how you got it, where it was on your computer, what did you do with the file folder containing the old version is it still there or was it overwritten? thanks. Avada does not auto update when you click the update link (thanks avada for not working as directed) so if I have to delete the old version it would help to know where I can find the new version on my computer after it is downloaded but is NOT in the WP folder.

You have to download the newest version from the theme developer. Also, and ThemeForrest theme can auto update, you have to use the Envato toolkit then create an API. Now I know that sounds daunting, but it's not really. I should make a video on it, because it is rather simple.

I can see following message on my dash board. How I can solve it... Your theme (Flatsome Child Theme) contains outdated copies of some WooCommerce template files. These files may need updating to ensure they are compatible with the current version of WooCommerce. You can see which files are affected from the system status page. If in doubt, check with the author of the theme.

Is there a reason you need to delete the old version of theme in order to update it? I have a theme from Evanto that doesn't have auto update. I've been trying to upload the zip file all day and it just hangs. Is that because it already exists there (or at least it thinks it does even though it's an older version)? I'm really worried about activating another theme and then deleting the old one and then not being able to upload the new version considering that all day the new one is not uploading :( I've got internet speed and retried many times. Hoping you can help. It's a little daunting. Cheers

I"m giving it a go but am very nervous :( The reason I asked is because it asks you when uploading to say 'yes' if its an upgrade as it will upload it differently. Doesn't that mean we don't have to delete it (althoughI already have ... )

I successfully deleted the old one and chose another theme But when I was uploading the updated theme it just hung all the time and I couldn't upload it so I manually uploaded the zip file through FTP instead and then activated that.

I am unable to change new theme... as it is looking for PHP 7.0. I have updated wp to 5.4. Still same p problem. I have hired middle hosting a company till 2023 all paid . They are helping..as issue normal maintenance ...and part contract. ...they more money . Please more light please the issue. Regards harvinder singh

If you are using GeneratePress, and there is an update, you should see the update available in WordPress.

Are you using caching plugins? If so maybe you should flush it.

Is it safe to do the updates? Especially when they say Compatibility with WordPress 4.3.1: 100% (according to its author) Yes, I am running WordPress 4.3.1 I assume that is the newest version 4.3.1 as of today!

My web designer will be fixing it if there is anything not working or out of place, etc... Do you think it will be almost like building a new website or using an entirely different theme?
