How to update the Pantone Colour Book Swatches in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign.
It can be very frustrating when you want to use a Pantone colour swatch from in your artwork but it isn't available from the swatches panel inside your Adobe software but it is in your printed Pantone guide.
In this video, I'll show you how to update your existing Pantone Colour Books/Swatches as well as add Pantone guides for other colour models e.g Pantone Metallics, Neons, Fashion etc.
In the video, I show you how to use the 'Easy Export' option in Pantone COlour Manager. Unfortunately, this is only available on the Windows version of the software and not available on the macOS version.

Thanks for the useful guide. The Easy export button appears to be a Windows only feature, so Mac users will have to Export individual guides. Choose Lab values for Print based Spot colours. sRGB values if you are just designing for Screen - web/animation etc.

That is good to know Phil. I have an iMac but I use it as a back up machine and I hadn't checked in there was the easy export on the Mac. I'll update the video description to include this information.

I'm using Ai on Mac and have purchased 2 different color books from Pantone. Hello! Does anyone know how to add the FHI book? To save money, I'd like to buy a new one from eBay, but if I end up having to purchase the Color Manager anyway, kind of defeats the purpose. I'm assuming the serial number used to activate Color Manager is on all books even when not purchased directly from Pantone ?? I am prepared to just suck it up and spend tho dollars to get one from Pantone if necessary.

Thank you so much for this video. It's so strange Adobe doesn't update this (anymore?), and that Pantone provides such an annoying bit of software. Or at least, it's an appalling piece of software (you thought I was going to say "junk", and you are correct) when you're using a Mac. Also, I never found a guide for updating or exporting an updated colour library on either Adobe's or Pantone's website either, so your video was a godsend.

It is what it is. There is D50 and D65 and D65 has 10 degree observer and 2 degree. The very last one is to be used almost everywhere. So as you can imagine the original is spectrums, not just R'G'B' triplet. So you have to have an app like that. Also there is a reference color management system inside...

I found out this way which works for both Illustrator and Affinity (April 2021) - open PANTONE Color Manager, go to File - Save as - set a File Type to .ase. Then go to Illustrator, Open Swatch Library - Other Library - choose .ase file you downloaded. To import to Affinity, go to Swatches - Import Palette - and choose your .ase file. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for the video! I recently bought my first Pantone swatch book (bridge coated) and l registered the number and downloaded the latest colors into adobe softwares. Some colors come up when l search it but others don't show up at all, what can l do to show it all on my softwares??

Recently I'm working for a client who wants only a wordmark logo for his business. So I'm confused how to make it unique and relevant to the business. Can you make a video on this topic sometime??

I've added it to my list of videos to make Hridoy. Fonts have personality. they can be serious, silly, friendly, angry and so on. So you want to choose a font that has the best fit for your client's brand and audience and then you can customise the letters. Or you can just create a complete custom set of letters to make the wordmark truly unique :)

I just downloaded the original app, you can still do it as of today but its no longer for sale. The code on new books are located on the inside of the books now (for me first page) and you have to register the book first in order for it to work (real pain in the ass). I have a mac and it did not have the Easy Export option but the first version shown worked perfect. Thanks for the video! very useful

Hey Parker, Yeah, quite a few changes since I recorded that video. Pantone will be removing the colour manager app entirely and are moving forward with their Pantone Connect app. I'm hoping to get a video created on that soon. Really busy with client work right now, which is making it hard to find time to create new videos.

Hey fella. A very helpful video, thanks. One question; my Pantone Colour Manager doesn't have the Easy Install button at the bottom left. I only have Display and Devices. I can't see a way of getting that showing. Any clue? Obviously, I can just install them all the long way by doing them one at a time.

I believe that you will need to view the Pantone FHI Cotton TCX and FHI Paper TPG books. I’ve no experience with these colour books myself as it isn’t my area of work. If you install the Pantone Connect extension for Adobe or visit the connect website you can gain access to those books. connect.pantone.com

I dont have the easy export button so I cant do it that way. You say thats the easy way but you don't explain what the hard way would be. It seems like clicking on file>export>illustrator>lab or sRGB would then do it right away but for me nothing happens. I see that its been exported but the pantones are still not there in illustrator

Unfortunately, yeah, Pantone look to have killed off any downloads of Pantone Colour Manager in an effort to make people use Pantone Connect :(

hi, i hv bought a printed pantone color book/swatches (color bridge 2020). i found that the same Pantone color RGB and CMYK value referenced on the printed color book are different from what is shown from the official PANTONE website. any idea how should I handle this?

Pantone are always making tweaks to the colours and so you will get mismatches if you jump back and forth between the website and the books. I just stick with the numbers from my Pantone Bridge books.

When I go to file and export, "Standard" is not an option. I also don't have the button at the bottom that is an icon with an arrow. I also see on your version that it has "Pantone Live Help." Mine doesn't have that either. I updated the software and it didn't change anything. Any thoughts on how I can export?

Do you have a video how to export from Pantone Colour Management to Adobe Software, when the software is grayed out? It says my Adobe Illustrator isn't installed but it clearly is, but won't let me export and is grayed out. Meanwhile, it recognizes that Photoshop is installed. I have tried File>Export>Edit Custom Export Paths and manually tried to put the software in but when I export it says that it has failed. It is doing my head in.

I’ve not tried to export from PCM for quite some time. I made a backup of the colour libraries do that I could drop them into the library folders after each upgrade. It could be that Pantone has now closed that option. I’ll investigate to see if I can still export to Illustrator from PCM.

You could do CMY + a spot colour (Pantone), but you would need to speak to your chosen printer about how best to set up the print file for them to use :)

It has been replaced by Pantone Connect at €51 a year. This channel has done a thorough review of it . Its not clear if all the libraries will be possible to be updated in Adobe which I expected, they still seem to be working on it.

Unfortunately, the only option you have now is to use Pantone Connect. You can use it for free but it is very limited. You have to pay to get the full functionality. Hi Alexandra, Unfortunately there isn’t a 100% free way to get the software. You have to either buy the software or you can download a copy of it if you have purchased and registered a Pantone swatch book.

Pixels Ink, I usually use the ones in the software but looks like having the swatch books is sound investment. I know I’m gonna get them now.

@@SaveenaKannanchath They are expensive, but if you do a lot of work like logo design where specifying Pantone colours is a requirement, they are a worthwhile investment. You really only need to get the Pantone Bridge books (Coated and Uncoated). That will give you the Pantone solid and it's CMYK equivalent.

I rely on the Pantone swatches in my software because I'm a new designr and I have very little knowledge about using Pantone colors besides in my country printing presses don't follow Pantone colors. And finally I can not afford to buy one yet. But maybe in future I will.

@@AbdurRahman-li2ic Hi, Hridoy. I found this great video while searching how to get newer swatches added to my Adobe CC Suite. For alternatives, I believe that Adobe works with TOYO inks. I have the books (also expensive) but they are quite old and not sure if they have kept the software updated to integrate into the design programs. In the US, you can take any Pantone or TOYO swatch or even a scrap of fabric and the printer will mix the ink with approval process. They charge more for custom inks (including TOYO since it's not standard in the US) than with the preset formulaic solutions that Pantone provides. In the US it's around $40 per color for print to paper. Having the system and books to correspond to really just helps the designer be more efficient and stay within global best practices for color. I keep swatch boards for each client and provide those to my clients with brand identity system deliverables. Sure hope Pantone can improve their laborious troubleshooting for software integration to Adobe!

You can download it for free if you have purchased a Pantone colour guide. There will be a code inside your guide that will give you free access to the software. Pantone are removing this software very soon, and recommend that people move over to using their Pantone Connect Software.
