How to Upgrade Chromebook Hard Drive

In this video we'll look at How to Upgrade Chromebook Storage. Upgrading Chromebook storage is easy, but there are some caveats:
- Not all Chromebooks can be upgraded.
- Not all Chromebooks use an M.2 drive.
- Some Chromebooks may use SSDs.
- Some Chromebooks may use other sizes (in dimensions) of drives.
When you do this, you’ll lose the data on your device, so make sure you have a bootable USB before you get started in order to get your operating system of choice installed once you’ve changed out your storage drive.
The process of changing the storage in the Acer C720 Chromebook is pretty easy. Remove all the fasteners from the bottom of the device.
- Remove the bottom of the device.
- Locate the M.2 drive.
- Remove the retention fastener.
- Remove the M.2 drive.
- Install the new M.2 drive making sure that it is fully inserted.
- Install the retention fasteners.
- Replace the bottom of the Chromebook.
- Replace the fasteners to secure the bottom of the Chromebook.
Install the operating system you'd like on your Chromebook. In most cases, you'll just reinstall ChromeOS with a Chromebook Recovery USB. If you have a modified BIOS, you can install whatever operating system you'd like as long as it's compatible.

Greetings, I have a 16GB acer C720 and I modified the BIOS with mr.chromebox to have it full. my question is, when changing the hard disk I have to redo the process of putting the BIOS full or it will boot me with chromeOS since in the process of installing the BIOS erase the boot of ChromeOS and save the firmware save it in a USB

If you've already installed the Mr Chromebox Bios, you can swap the hard drive with no issue. You'll have to reinstall Windows on the new drive, but you won't have to go through the process of flashing the BIOS again as the BIOS is stored on a separate chip on the motherboard.

one caveat of my samsung chromebook i got a couple years ago CASTA C6B-A2B-A4V-46A-A7S is the apparent model number according to the recovery utility, but cant find any videos to see if it's possible to upgrade the ram or storage cause yea, im not a huge fan of the cloud....but LOVE the chromebook perfoamcne and experience thus far.

I can almost 100% guarantee that the RAM will not be serviceable. If you want to know if your hard drive can be changed, take the bottom off your chromebook and look?

Chrome OS is free and you could make a bootable usb just like how you install Linux distros. Chrome OS is Linux.

Hello there )) I have a question. I bought a google chromebook but it only has 64 gb storage. Dude! This video is awesome! I cannot help but wonder how many folks got an M.2 before they realized they were replacing an MSATA. And why on earth would anyone install windows on these suckers when clearly a Linux distro will work better? But I digress. Note: I have an older Chromebook which I have installed the following: Linux Lite, Xubuntu, and Zorin. Getting gutsy enough to double the storage so that I can run Mint or Ubuntu with ease. It will end up being the machine I use most bc its compact. Thank you for the video on reinstalling Chrome OS, as well.

I have a question. So my friend gave me an old Chromebook that was just lying around which has upgradable SSD. But when he bought a new laptop he removed the old SSD to destroy it.... I understand that ChromeOS would be gone, but would there be some sort of blockade preventing me from going straight to Linux. . Eg, while you have the old SSD in would have to remove ChromeOS, then remove it before upgrading the SSD?... Or can I just go straight in with the new SSD and install Linux right on it?

if you were to install linux to the SSD and then put it in the Chromebook it might work. Otherwise, you might have to install the SSD, enable "boot from USB" mode on the Chromebook, then install Linux.

Thank you for making this video. It's really informative. I've been trying to fix my Lenovo S330 Chromebook. It wouldn't power on twice within the last several days, and each time, I had to do the special button combination (escape + refresh + power) and then a recovery from a usb flash drive. I was able to fix it both times, but it's only a matter of time before it will do it again. Could this be a flash drive issue or something else? The second time I recovered it with a usb flash drive, I was able to do it without plugging it into power. So it seems to me that the battery is most likely ok, considering it still often shows a green and or orange light after a week of non-use. But this and one other video have been lifesavers, since fixing these things during covid-19 pandemic is not easy, and there aren't any Lenovo repair centers anywhere nearby. And, unfortunately, I strongly suspect that the cost of this repair would most likely exceed what I paid for this Chromebook ($219) back in July of 2019.

As I've told everyone else who has asked some variation of this question: Take the bottom off your Chromebook and see if you can do it. There's no way for me to know the upgradability of every chromebook out there.

Chrome OS is basically a Linux distribution and there is an option to enable the Debian source code that Chrome OS is based off

Which you can do on a Windows laptop easily by cloning the old drive onto the new, larger drive so that you don't have to backup everything and re-install the OS etc in the manner I stated above. I'm inquiring if that process can be done on cOS as well. I imagine it can be but since I'm new to cOS I figured I'd inquire to someone with more experience with it.

I only had 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage when I installed linux on my Chromebook the first time, so you should be good.

A lot of that will depend on the operating system and whether or not anyone has developed drivers for the touch screen. With that much RAM, it should run pretty smoothly, but remember, you might only have a dual core processor, so it might still be somewhat limited, but for daily use of browsing the internet or writing code or that sort of thing, it should be fine.

I might not get answered but lets try. My question is i have a windows 10 ssd card with me. Could i replace chromebooks normal ssd with my windows ssd? And will it run windows and not break chrome. If it will how would i fix this?

Everything I'm about to say is speculation. I don't know if your Chromebook has a compatible processor. I don't know if your Chromebook has a replaceable hard drive. Even if it is replaceable, I don't know if your Windows 10 SSD is comptible with your Chromebook. Chromebooks often use m.2 style SATA SSDs and not 2.5" SATA SSDs. Yours may be different, but I have no way of knowing. Even if everything is compatible and you're able to put the Windows 10 SSD in the Chromebook, you would have to remove the SSD with ChromeOS on it from the device. That won't "break Chrome", but it will make it so that ONLY Windows will load since you've removed the drive with the Chrome Operating System on it. You're going to have to do your own research on whether or not anything you have is compatible. And, no I won't do the research for you if you tell me your Chromebook model and/or its specs.

Hola. Me sucedió un problema grande en mi chromebook c720. Le cambié la BIOS y le instalé windows 10. Por defecto tenía un disco SSD de 16gb y se lo cambié por uno de 128 Gb. Desde ahí tuve problemas porque la BIOS no iniciaba desde windows ya que cambié la SSD y para desgracia se quedó en pantalla negra con un mensaje que dice: grafics console started. La chromebook quedo muerta y no se que hacer en este caso.

I googled the S/N on the device and it came back as a 42, but that doesn't mean that YOUR Chromebook will be the same unless you have the exact same Chromebook. Also, just because my Chromebook was upgradeable doesn't mean yours will be. You'll need to take your Chromebook apart to find out for sure.

If your device is capable of having the hard drive replaced, you'll need to find a compatible device. It might be SATA. It might be NVMe. It could be any number of different lengths. You'll need to find out what your device requires and then find a compatible replacement.

This isn't about performance. It's about increasing storage. If your device has an SSD and you put a bigger SSD, the performance isn't going to change much since they are both SSDs

@@DBTechYT the NVME ssd has read and write speeds more that 6-8 times more than eMMC ssd storage in synthetic benchmark tests. I don't know how much real life difference it makes in actual performance though.

Because max write speeds of an SD card is 90MB/sec if you're lucky. Max write speeds of an SSD on Sata III is 520MB/sec. That's more than 5x faster than an SD card.

Oh, and one other thing to watch out for on M.2 drives...LENGTH! In this case, for sure, LENGTH DOES MATTER! The Kingspec NT-256 is a 42-mm drive (defined in the '2242' numbering)...I'm really bad about ordering Western Digital NGFF M.2 2280 sizes...and I have to catch myself and check dimensions, before clicking 'order'...or there goes 2-weeks waiting for the return to credit, just so I can order the RIGHT dimensions! Again, MOST Chromebooks take the 42-mm long M.2 NGFF format...2242, though some have a clear socket to accept the 60-mm length (to my knowledge, NONE will accept the 80-mm lengths!)

Something to be aware of, that MANY OEMs (let alone YT'ers) leave out...is that NOT ALL eMMC M.2 is created equal! There are, in fact, SEVERAL form factors...and NOTHING sucks worse than to buy a M.2 drive, only to find that the one you NEED is NOT the one you purchased! In this case, it is an NGFF M.2 eMMC 2280 256-drive...sells for about $40. You can step up to 512-Gb for another $30...and if you throw in some LPDDR3 Ram (some can take 8-GB, some can expand to 16-GB in 2-stick totals), you NOW have a real laptop that can run Winsucks as well as (the far better) Linux (just make an 'install' USB, and boot into it...it takes care of the rest, depending on distro).

How is this comment helpful? This video is 4.5 years old with 156k views and I honestly think you're one of the only people to complain about it. Maybe not the only one, but fewer than 10 people for sure have said anything about it. Creators area allowed to try new things with their content to see what works and what doesn't.

The majority won't likely bother to complain about some particulars, and/or the majority are de-sensitized to various things, but those with an eye for improvement and a passion to see a better world, will. Often, you can accommodate a sensitive minority without offending the majority.

I haven't done music like this in my videos in a LONG time. But you only want to focus on this one video out of the HUNDREDS I've made.
