I'm glad the 15" with the hard keyboard is just as easy to upgrade as the 13.5" with the Alcantara keyboard. Hopefully Samsung and Crucial will start building their M.2 in 2230, their migration software it topnotch and all you'll have to do is ghost the internal, swap it and go.

I noticed that the ssd removed only had the M-key and the ssd you installed had a M and B key. Are you sacrificing the pcie x4 performance with this?

Yes, we are. But truth be told, getting a 512GB SSD when configuring the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 for Business would cost a total of $2,100. Of course, it comes with 16GB RAM and the Core i7 Processor, but Arif has the base model Core i5 model with 8GB RAM and doesn't need the extra processing power. His cost $1,300. So the difference was worth it for him, as well as giving up the PCIE x4 performance.

@@onmsft I have the surface laptop 3, 13.5" model with 256GB, i7. I am looking to replace the SSD. Do i need to replace it with one that has the PCIE x4 performance? so does that mean a SSD with the M Key only? and any ideas where I can get that from? Hello Vinh! It wasn't shown on camera in the video, but the metal heat sync is actually UNDER the original Microsoft SSD. It's part of the caddy which houses the original Microsoft SSD. Our full post has a descripion about that. You can remove the heat sync from the original Microsoft SSD and put it in the new SSD if you please, but it's glued into place with thermal paste. Arif didn't want to do that as it would complicate the warranty situation if he wanted to put the old Microsoft SSD back in place. www.onmsft.com/feature/heres-how-i-upgraded-the-ssd-in-my-surface-laptop-3

You should disconnect the battery before removing the SSD.

Yes, Microsoft's official steps mention disconnecting the ribbon cable that holds the keyboard deck in place. Arif skipped it.

I guess understand 2242 means the first two digit i.e 22 in mm specify width and lat 2 digit in mm i.e 42 in mm specify the length of ssd . While there appears to be enough room for the longer 2242 (42mm long ssd) there's no screw hole to hold the ssd down, is there an adapter made, maybe.
