Teaching myself to sew as well as still learning the tricks of the trade w/ Cricut Design Space and this is a game changer! Can’t wait to test this out. Started making baby bibs now onto little stuffed baby taggie toys for my 1st great-niece! GREAT tutorial, thank you!

Your tutorial has made my life so much easier; you are easy for me to understand and follow. I have a learning disability so learning new things is not always easy for me. I also struggle with computers. I'm 62 so I did not grow up with them so they are a continual battle for me but still grateful for them they have opened up a new world for me. Your tutorial is a God send for me thank you so very much. I wish you the very best in life.

Absolutely, if it’s not too much trouble what I am looking for is to print my pattern and then cut it and then at a later date, I can just do the cut, but I will search RU-vid and see what else I can find because I am sure you’re creating a whole new video for me. It would be a lot of work! thank you so much for making this video for us!
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 10 месяцев назад
Yes, great suggestion! In the meantime you can save your project and name it whatever you like. Once saved, you can locate your project and simply click on “make it”. And it will cut the same size as last time. But you could also duplicate your project and resize one of them, if you needed 2 sizes. I hope this makes sense 😊

You, my dear have saved my sanity! I have been struggling for the past 2 mos trying to get my purse patterns into my DS for my Cricut Maker! I even bought the Affinity app and it does work but it’s a bit difficult and if you don’t use it everyday then it’s like trying to learn it all over every time. 🧐 Tonight in less than 2 hrs I was able to load some pattern pcs correctly, weld pcs together, mirror pcs, all of it! I’m so excited now to continue using my Cricut to cut out the curved and angled pcs while I cut all the rectangles, squares etc! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR PUTTING THIS VIDEO TOGETHER!!! So very helpful and easy to follow!

Hi Jill, You’re so welcome & I’m so happy you found it helpful. Just recently Cricut added another feature to Design Space which will be amazing for sewing patterns. We can now double click on the pattern piece in the layers panel and give it a name!!!! So an example might be “inside purse pocket”. I haven’t had time to record the tutorial yet but its so exciting to share with you! The new feature works with any project not just sewing ones. YaY 😁

Wonderful video! Saved me! I am a new sewer. So, once I make a copy that is 1/4 inch smaller on all sides, I center it over the original, and turn it into a draw line. That way, I have the seam allowance marked to sew on! Thanks so much for this!
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey Год назад
Yes! Just be sure to “attach” the draw line to pieces or piece so your Cricut will know to ‘draw’ once you click on ‘make it’. You’re very welcome and Happy Sewing 🧵😊

Thank you for a wonderful video that is so clear and easy to follow. A tip for the snipping tool if anyone has not already mentioned it, is to use free form tool which is located under the Mode tab. I had a pattern that had a lot of writing surrounding it so is was easier to not include that writing it in the first instance rather than trying to remove it later. Need a steady hand though lol

I've been using Design Space for a while and didn't know about the contour button ... that's a game changer! I like to buy the 2-pack of plastic cutting boards from Dollar Tree and cut my pattern out of that. It works great for fussy cutting because you can see the fabric below it. Many times, my bag pattern pieces are too large to weld into one, plus my Cricut Air doesn't cut fabric well.

Wouldn’t subtracting .5 make the interfacing a half inch smaller? For a quarter inch I would have subtracted .25. Right? Other than that I found your instructions just excellent! I’m doing research before purchasing a Maker and I’ll be subscribing to your channel right now in the hope that all your videos tutorials are as concise and informative as this one. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 3 года назад
Hi Christina, Great question, respectfully no as if you subtract .25 it would leave you 1/8" all the way around the pattern piece. By decreasing it by .5 it equals 1/4" on all four sides. I hope this helps 😊 Welcome to my channel and so happy you are here! 🙌
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 3 года назад
@pattie412 Hello! Right? It is a bit confusing. What helped me sort it out in my mind is like in my example, we want 1/4" from all the way around the pattern piece. We can only adjust the Width and Height of the pattern piece. So, 1/4" + 1/4" for the width equals .50 and the same for the Height. This gives us 1/4" size off the entire pattern piece (not just one side) Don't feel silly either, I had to prove it to myself by cutting it out on paper instead of fabric just so I could have a paper reference to check myself since I am such a visual learner. Plus numbers simply confuse me, lol Thanks so much for the comment and welcome to my channel 😊 So happy you are here!

@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 2 года назад
Hi Rosa, You can upload any pattern. But if you want the Cricut to cut out the fabric you would only want to upload pattern pieces that fit on the Cricut Mats. Currently, there are 2 sizes of fabric Cricut mats. 12" X 12" will cut fabric 11.5" X 11.5". And 12" X 24" will cut fabric 11.5" X 23.5". Keep in mind, you can still cut out large size pattern pieces on our sewing table but use the Cricut for all the intricate cuts type of deal. I keep saying fabric but the Cricut cuts a huge variety of 300+ materials! 😊

Denise I love this video. I'm a newbie to Cricut and I love how much time you've taken to really explain this for beginners as well as everyone else! I'm stuck though and I can't figure out why - I followed all the steps, I had the Cricut machine cut the 1' square from the pattern piece as well (to check that on my first go it went correctly to size) but the pattern piece is tiny.... it should cut a 5 & 5/8' piece square but it's 2 & 7/8'...any ideas what I did wrong?
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 2 года назад
@hollyYoung Hi 😊 so happy you enjoyed it! When you first uploaded the pattern into Design Space, did you keep the pattern piece’s grouped to the 1” square to size all pieces at once? Off hand it’s the only thing I can think of in the moment. Also checking to see if you uploaded to Desktop version of Design Space or the App version via a tablet? 😉

Hi Denise. Thank you very much for taking your time and energy to put together this video. I learned a lot watching your video. I also use a lot of PDF (electronic and hard copy/paper) patterns and had a hard time as a new Cricut user. I purchased the Cricut exactly to cut my patterns onto fabric on the Circut Maker. Finally, after a year of having the Cricut Maker, I'm able to do this because of your video. Additionally, the extra's you put in; like how to make the pattern smaller to compensate for interfacing (genius). I have a question; can you place items next to each on the same mat provided there is space to fit? Lastly, I have an Ipad that I'd like to use with my Cricut, so if you have gotten other requests, add my name to the list! Thank you, Thank you!

Hi Pam, reading your comment literally made my day! Thanks so much. You can absolutely move pattern pieces around on the mat as long as it's the same fabric you will be using. You would do this on the "Mat Preview" screen, so those are the mats right "after" you select "make it". Also, I've added the tutorial for the iPad as well. Thanks so much for brightening my day! 😊

Hi Denise! Great explanations. I'm trying to decide whether a circuit maker is worth the investment. You have the most recent information, for which I thank you so much! I just started sewing handbags, wallets, etc. Most of my PDF files, at some point, require me to tape pieces from different pages of my pattern together to make the full pattern piece. How do you take a screenshot of the piece in this case? Do I have to take screen shots of every page that contains part of the pattern then but them up next to each other to form the full pattern piece? Thank you for your time.
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 2 года назад
Hi Rita, You are correct. Take screenshots of each pdf page then upload to DS, then weld or attach the lines on the pattern pieces together depending on your desired outcome. Keep in mind you are limited to the size of your Cricut mats. A 12" X 12" mat can cut fabric to 11.5" X 11.5". A 12" X 24" mat can cut fabric to 11.5" X 23.5". I will also mention another route would be to digitize your pattern pieces by using software like (free) Inkscape or (paid) Adobe Illustrator. Both of these software's do have a bit of a learning curve. With these software's you then have the option to save as a pdf pattern or a SVG file. Oh, one more thing! If your pattern is simple as in mostly square, rectangles or slight curves, you can create your own patterns right in Design Space using shapes. I've made some really cute cell phone purses this way! I hope this info helps! 😊

That was very helpful, thank you! I'm new to my Cricut Maker3, and was wondering how to cut patterns on fabric. Glad to now know the snip it tool, and how to make pattern smaller! Questions: if we scan a pattern, would it be a copyright issue? And can we draw a paper pattern and scan it to use? Thank you again!
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey Год назад
Hi @thePacadashery, So happy this was helpful. As far as copyright issues (although I am not an attorney, lol) it really can be confusing. I try to think of it this way: If I bought the file OR if the file or pattern was free to use from a blog or website, I can scan it for my personal use for the project I am making. If the same pattern or file came with a "commercial" license, I could make the project and sell the item I created after using that pattern or file. I would be in copyright violation if I gave their "digital pattern" to others for use whether free or paid. The bottom line though is if a pattern or file comes with a license then be sure to read it as some have limitations, such as you can sell 200 items made with my digital file, please reach out if you need to sell more for a different license. So again....there are so many variables to consider. If ever in doubt it's best practice to reach out to the owner of said pattern, most are quite happy to help clarify. Now, as far as drawing paper patterns, yes! You can draw a pattern on paper and scan it to upload it. I'd suggest adding a true-to-size reference such as a 1" square measured by a ruler on the paper pattern you drew, so when you upload it, you can verify the 1" size once in Design Space then you know the proportions are correct. In addition, patterns can be created by using digital apps such as Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, Procreate, and Canva. Just to name a few! Sorry, this was so long but I hope it will be helpful. Have an amazing day! 😊

@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey Год назад
Hi Bernadette, I have not tried it but I'm sure you could. To try it out. Group all pieces together and select "group" then duplicate the group and turn one of the groups off. This way you have a group to practice with and not mess of the sizing of the original group. Then on the practice group, keep it grouped so all pieces will size down the same. This is where you will need to really test the process out and test cut one out to see how close you are. OR if you have a 6" doll pattern piece already you may be able to compare the 2 sizes? If you test this out, let me know. In my mind you should be able to scaled a doll pattern up or down to your choosing, providing it fits on the Cricut mats. 😊

How did you select two items at once when you uploaded the pattern to the canvas area? Did you use the control key or a different key?

Hi Marilyn, When selecting items to add to your canvas, you can just click on each file once. So it will allow you to keep selecting more without having you hold shift or control. But.......once those pieces are on the Design Space Canvas, you then would need to use your "shift" key to select more than 1 item. I hope I understood your question correctly. If not, please let me know, and Happy Sewing! 🙂

I have a pattern I am doing that is applique pieces. I traced all the pieces onto a sheet of paper, scanned it, and followed your tutorial to get it into canvas. I used contour to delete the 1" box after sizing everything appropriately. Some of the pieces need to go on different mats, because they will be different fabrics. But all my pieces came in "grouped" into one item. Is there a way for me to make them individual pieces so I can change the colors like you did? That will allow me to have different mats. Thank you!
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 10 месяцев назад
If you click on the grouped pieces, does it allow you to “ungroup” them just above the layers panel is group/ungroup. If this does not work, you can make the same amount of copies of the group as there are pieces in the group and then select a square and slice each piece apart or personally I would make the copies then use the “contour” feature to deselect all other pieces except for one shape, then continue until you have one of each piece that is separate. I hope this helps! You can also email me if you need further assistance. My email is in the about section of my RU-vid channel 😊

Sorry for so many questions. I have a pattern and only one page has the one inch square. Do I attach all the pages to the pattern to include the one inch square?
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 3 года назад
Hi Madeline, That's a fantastic question, Ty! If the one inch square is separate from the first pattern piece then I would scan the one inch square and upload it into Design Space but then keep that one inch square to size with each pattern piece you bring into Design Space. To do this, take a screen shot of the square, upload it into Design Space. The important point to remember about the square is once you attach it to a pattern piece then size it to fit the actual square of the design space grid, that square is no longer useful because you have no way of resizing that same square to how it was before. So to get around that issue. I would simply never use the original square I uploaded, instead duplicate that first square each time you upload the next pattern piece, then once attached and sized, contour the square out like I show in the video. Then start over again.....duplicate the square and upload your next pattern piece, attach it to the square, resize and contour the square out. Sorry for all the words, just trying to make it simplified, Ha! hopefully not harder to understand. Let me know if this helps 🙌😊

So strange question...if you're mirroring to cut on the fold, wouldn't you have flipped horizontal and aligned the the pieces against the top (which would be the fold?)
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 2 года назад
Hi W T Dahl, Great question! I did it this way due to the curve/angle in the pattern piece. If you look closely you can see the curves match up just as if I had folded the pattern piece over like we do on our sewing cutting table. It's kind of confusing. With this curved pattern piece If I flipped it horizontally, it would have made it double end to end instead of width-wise. I hope this helps! 😊

thx for making this tutorial. a tip on Snipping tool- if u snip the wrong section, u just click New-don't need to close and re-open. I want to do this technique with a bandana pattern, the edges of the pattern have dashed lines for different sizes, so it leaves an empty space when importing. any ideas on how to fix this?
@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 3 года назад
Hi Jenny, You are welcome, and Thanks so much for the Snipping Tip! There are several options for the dashed line issue that quickly come to mind. Some are situational too, such as if you sell Dog Bandana's I'd want to make a separate pattern piece for each size to have on-hand type of deal. If you have Adobe Illustrator (paid)or Inkscape (free) you can upload the pattern and edit it to add a solid line for each pattern size. If you don't have access to those apps, I'd print off the amount of the sizes you want.....I'll use 3 as an example. Print off 3 copies of the same pattern. Use a Black Sharpie to make a solid line on each piece or simply cut them at the size you want. Then scan them onto your computer then upload them into Design Space. Also, I have scanned pattern pieces using the "note" app on my iPad as well. I hope this helps! 😊

Hi Claire, great question! Since SVG patterns are still kind of new, I've found most of them include a pdf reference pattern with the Width & Height included on each pattern piece, or they send like an info sheet that gives the Width & Height dimensions of each pattern piece. This way when you upload the SVG pattern pieces into Design Space there really is no need for a 1" square, but I have found some include it. I did reach out to a pattern designer whom I purchased an SVG pattern from and she was more than happy to include the sizes I needed via email. Not sure if she just forgot or didn't think it was needed. I hope this helps! Oh you also have a choice to upload as a "cut" image or a "print then cut" image. If you upload as a "print then cut" you can see the measurements (if they typed them on the pattern pieces) make sure the Width & Height are good or adjust, then change it to a "Cut" File via the "operations" tab Whew, sorry so long, tee hee! 🙌😊

@DeniseHumphrey
@DeniseHumphrey 3 года назад
Hi Momzila (love the name you picked by the way) 😀 I am on a budget and buy blades when Cricut puts them on sale throughout the year, they have great sales! How long they last would depend on what type of material you are cutting and how often. To extend your use, while using the fine point blade would be to keep one fine point blade for paper and keep another fine point blade and use it for "fabric only". Another tip is to poke your fine point blade into a rolled-up ball of foil approx 25 times and this will help keep your blades clean and free of buildup or perhaps a piece of glitter or fibers or vinyl stuck to it. I mostly use my Cricut Maker when cutting fabric and often use the rotary blade. In four years I've only replaced the rotary blade once. As far as a mess inside of the Cricut when cutting the fabric I'm happy to say no. Thanks to the sticky mat you place your fabric on it makes no mess in the machine, yay! Great job on sharpening your fabric scissors, something that is on my long "To-Do" List, LOL Take care, hope this helps 😊
