3M™ DBI-SALA® Suspension Trauma Safety Straps 9501403
The Suspension Trauma Safety Strap was designed to help a worker overcome the potential negative health impacts of suspension trauma (otherwise known as Orthostatic Intolerance). This condition can occur when a person remains suspended at height (after a fall) for even short periods of time. Suspension in a harness may cause blood to pool in the veins of the legs which can result in unconsciousness; if not rescued promptly, serious injury or death may occur. The Suspension Trauma Safety Strap is designed to prevent suspension trauma while a worker is awaiting rescue. The Suspension Trauma Safety Strap allows the worker, who is suspended, to stand up in their harness and to relieve the pressure being applied to the arteries and veins around the top of the legs. The continuous loop design allows both sides of the harness to relieve the pressure being applied to the legs. The strap accommodates either having one foot or both feet in the loop at a time it will relieve the pressure to both sides with just one foot in allowing for added movement of the legs. The strap allows for increased comfort, balance and improved circulation in the legs while suspended and waiting for rescue.

For people working at height that are thinking about what
happens in the event of a fall we're often asked what
these small pouches are that are on each hip of some
of the full-body harnesses.
In the event of a fall, if somebody falls and they're
suspended at height awaiting rescue, these two straps
across the legs often are restricting some of the blood
flow that goes to the legs.
These two straps are what we call suspension trauma
safety straps. The idea is that if somebody is suspended
at height awaiting rescue, you can undo the zip on the hip
one of the straps contains a hook on the end and the
other one contains a series of loops.
So, this is the hook.
And this is the one that contains the loops.
The idea is that you grab the hook and you put it through
one of the loops that suits the height of the person
and if 'Old Mate' here had some legs he would put his legs
on here and use it as a step to take the pressure off these
straps so that blood in his body isn't restricted
to staying in his legs, so it can flow around his body
more freely than if he wasn't using the straps.
This can prolong the time that somebody can be
potentially suspended at height considerably,
whilst they're awaiting rescue.
Some of the harnesses contain the trauma straps as
standard, and for others suspension trauma safety straps
can be purchased like this separately and retro-fitted to
other harnesses that don't have them as standard.
