Using a fuzzy plush blanket as a quilt backing can be a little tricky but with a little patience and some pro tips you can produce a beautiful smooth finished quilt. I quilted this quilt using my Handi Quilter Pro-Stitcher and a pantograph called Maple Syrup by Willow Leaf Designs.

I have never considered a blanket for backing. Wow lots of possibilities with this idea. Thank you ❤

If you use a flannel sheet make sure to cut off all of the finished seams first!

I’ve only ever used fleece or blankets as backings for my throws (I don’t make bed-sized quilts). They’re so cozy and I don’t have to use batting. Try it sometime! It’s fun.

I have used blankets as well. But no batting. Never had any pull through. You are right about cost. Very economical.

Yeah I've lots of blankets with no pull through too, but they just aren't all created equal. Do you use no batting because you live in South? Do you use a flannel sheet or actually nothing?

Any tips on basting to quilt using a blanket like this on a sit down machine? I have a juki tl2019q that I quilt with.

Hi! Great question. I would definitely pin baste (my favourite method because it's just so much more secure in the long run). Be careful not to over stretch it when you lay out the blanket (fortunately when you're done pinning you will be able to tell right away if you've overstretched). The blanket will definitely make your quilt bulkier so I would recommend starting with a baby quilt before you try a bigger quilt if you're not used to that much bulk. A Queen Supreme slider would come in handy if you're planning free motion. Watch your bobbin area as a lot of fuzz is going to come off the blanket as you go... The lower-ply blankets will work best for mitigating pull through, test a piece, and try and match the blanket to the quilt top. Give it a go!
