I've never had the necessity to tear an engine apart...yet...being more of a tuner, so thanks for the lesson!

Glad to help. TBH I didn't really want to do this one, but it is great to get new skills, and to buy new tools!

Thanks for the lesson on the bore gauge. Planning to tear into my K6 engine pretty soon because of low compression. What are you saying you found in the head? "Swoff"? Never heard this word. Good luck with the bike.
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH Год назад
Hi the word was swarf. This is the shavings of metal when something is cutting the metal. Either when a thread or something is being cut, but sometimes it can be unintentional if something is catching. I hope that this explains it for you. I think that the swarf I found was from some Helicoil thread repairs that have been done to the cam tower fixings. I am not completely certain that I won't find something more wrong with the engine, but I have my fingers crossed.

That was a very interesting vidio Les, I really enjoyed watching it. You certainly know your stuff. Shame it's turned out as it has, but I'm sure you will sort it. Cheers 👍

Thanks Alan, I'm still finding my way with a lot of this, a bit like life! I think that this engine has a few other secrets to tell.

Cylinder needs a torque plate while being bored so the cylinders are round when properly torqued but not necessarily so when out of the engine.
@SPANNERRASH

Certainly the best way. But we'll have to see what is available when I get them done.

I’d be inclined to put it back to standard spec, at least if you have a problem in future stuff is readily available, I’ve had the problem with the barrels being overbored, a few years back I had a rebore done for my gt750,when I got the barrels back, I put the new piston rings in to measure the end gap,service use was .15 to .45,I measured the ring gap on all 3 & it was .45, after doing this measurement at least a dozen times because I thought I was losing the plot,I took them to a mate of mine & too measured them a few times & we both came to the conclusion that the rebore was no good, after a chat with the well known gentleman,he took the pistons back & told politely to go forth & never come back,so had to find another set of barrels & i managed to find a set of genuine Suzuki pistons,this time I got the rebore done & even after 15 years it still runs perfect,good luck with what you decide on, I look forward to it with interest,

I think what you say is really good advice, and I am concerned that I may spend a lot of money and end up back at the start. I am considering putting the 750 barrels and pistons on to at least have the bike as a runner before spending any money on machine work. But I change my mind daily, and keep going back to the old wisdom, " if in doubt, do now't". I also have some other project work I am doing to keep me going in the mean time ;)

@@SPANNERRASH I don’t think you’d notice any extra performance with the 823 cc kit, maybe a bit of extra torque,you’d probably get more from changing the gearing,have a look at brick house builds on RU-vid, he’s brought a seized barnfind back to life & did a pretty good job too
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH Год назад
@@bluehazeboy Not a bad thought re the gearing, and probably right, but I'm still very tempted to try and make it work, for the enjoyment of figuring it out if nothing else. Ahh yes, I'm a big fan of the Brickhouse Builds vids, he does a lot of good work.

A set of 65mm pistons would fix everything. A set of 836cc pistons pistons and a bore would be the fast and easy fix.
@SPANNERRASH

Wasn't looking for big pistons, but while I have found them I will try to use them.

What is the clearance ratio
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH 9 месяцев назад
I was looking for the piston clearance. That is how much room there is around the piston in the bore. Most people are looking for 1 thousand of an inch, but the Honda service limit is quite a bit bigger than that.

There's 2 kinds of nations on the Earth. Those that have put a Man on the Moon and those using the Metric system.
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH Год назад
When we invented the old system, we didn't think it would catch on, glad you like it. Napoleon may have been a bit of a nuisance but I do like his metric system.
@hvymax
@hvymax Год назад
The bores being equal means they didn't bore to fit each piston like you would for a proper blueprint. They obviously didn't properly file the rings either. You want to deburr the rings so they don't scar the cylinders!!! Obviously hack built by someone throwing decent parts with no knowledge whatsoever.
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH Год назад
The rings were totally wrong, for 64mm pistons I think. I have a set of original Yoshi 64.5mm rings now.
