Using Stevenson, Baerwald, or Loefgren Protractor is a skill you will need to know if you ever want to change out your turntable cartridge, and each one works in the same way. They also allows you to remove annoying sibilance and distortion toward the inner groove of the record.
The protractor used in this video is a Baerwald and not a Stevenson. I ordered a Stevenson Protractor and just trusted that it was so, unfortunately I am too trusting.

Step 1) Re-caulk all windows prior to aligning turntable cartridge. Step 2) Do not wash hands. Step 3) Align cartridge

@@RoastBeefSandwich LMAO !! You can actually see the whole cartridge twist clockwise when the first screw is "torqued", as you said. Erm... ?!! Maybe they were rushing to get back to the caulking after stopping to put a record on. The Leatherman probably came in handy for that too. :D

Good video. You can get even more precise by looking down the cantilever too, and lining it up.

Personaly i use the Schön-Protractor since decades. Granted,it costs me about 40 bucks,but especially with sharper needles,like Shibata or Micro Ridge it provides a more precise adjustment. In addition azymuth and VTA should be adjusted.

I have two Gradiente turntables whose mats have protractor markings on the other side to help align the cartridge.

I think the Stevenson works best with the Grado cartridges.

I have replaced many cartridges in my lifetime, but this last time I almost lost my mind. I could not get both points correct and the overhang right. It was a Nagaoka MP110. You would think it would be easy because of the square cartridge shape. It took almost an hour to get right. I would get it aligned and then the overhang is off or vise versa.

I just picked up an MP-200 and mounted it yesterday. What a giant pain in the dick. I’ve never had that much trouble mounting a cartridge. Also, I know I just mounted it, but I am not living the sound at all. Very harsh and bloated bass. I have been told that they require about 30-ish hours of break in and my experience is common.

Having exactly the same issue with my MP110 on my technics 1200. Constantly fiddling and it just doesn't look right.. I get it straight and in line with the Orfoton protractor which is great, but the amount of how forward it is in the technics headshell looks SO wrong and far forward? Apparently it's 52mm though.. How did you get on in the end? do you have any further comments on it? Thanks so much

I own The Oracle Delphi Mark V {Anniversary Edition} Turntable. It's all laid out in Gold Trim , with the Black African Granite Base. & on it, I have a Graham Engineering Uni-Pivot 1.5 Tone Arm. The Cartridge is a Benz ~Micro (Glider). I've never had my table / Tone Arm & Cart Tweaked ? Not sure ? I know how to do this ? Wished someone would run a video on You Tube to show this set up done properly ? Mike L.

Does it not matter how forward or backward the cartridge is in the headshell? Would that not affect overhang?

Good question. Also, this seems to be easy to do if the cartridge protrudes out in front of the head shell. Mine may not.

Comes with practice. Always start with the inner point and move out. It takes me 5 minutes now to do what took me half an hour when I started.

Nick Knack if cartridge point's up towards spindle move back, if more down to begining of record move it forward hopefully this helps

I find it very sad that people are commenting over the proper heigine of the guy handling the $75 Grado prestige black. Main thing to take away is the process of aligning the cartridge. Now if the alignment was of at least a $400 AT 440mlx, or even worse a $1000+ Hana microline mc cartridge, then I would tidy up a bit and probably use less force and more gentle tools to align those cartridges.

What do you do when you can't get the cartridge to square up to both points. If I make an adjustment for the inner point, it is not longer square with the outer point. Not sure how to move forward. I was hoping this would help with innner groove distortion.

If it's square with the outer point and angled towards the spindle on the inner, the overhang is set too short. If it's angled away from the spindle, the overhang is set too long. Change the overhang and try again.

Yes, the cartridge will only align when set to the correct overhang.

It also depends on the arm shape, I've hear there are different alignment guide models for different tonearm shapes, is there a guide for that?

No, the shape has nothing to do with it. It's whichever alignment geometry the manufacturer chooses.

How can I adjust my tonearm on a Technics SL-QD33 turntable with a P-mount cartridge? I don't see any screws on the headshell. I have lots of distortion as the needle approaches the inner grooves of my records.

Sorry Jeff, but P-mounts cannot be adjusted. This is the reason that Standard Mounts have won the battle.

Even though you can't adjust the P-mount, there is a lot of variation in stylus quality. Do some research and find the best-rated P-mount cartridge that has been shown to eliminate inner groove distortion. Lots of standard-mount styli have the same problem as well. It can be a frustrating (and expensive) problem to solve.

I was looking for a protractor and some say they are for S shaped arms, some say they are for 9" tonearms, but most say nothing at all - is this a thing? Are there different ones or is this nothing to worry about?

There are different ones, and most tables are built with a specific alignment in mind. But aligning to a different system won’t hurt anything and many turntable owners prefer to align to something other than what their turntable recommends.

Actually a two point protractor determines how far forward/back a cartridge sits in the headshell. In your example, I've found if the nose of the cart slants / from above it needs to go forward. Likewise if it slants \ it needs to go back. For many years I thought a protractor was only used for getting the cart straight in the headshell.

I don't see how if it was perfectly aligned on the outside but not on the inside, then you adjust then it would be off of line on the outside right?

Only if you don't move the cartridge. You'll have to find the correct overhang setting for it to be able to align on both grids.

FIRST the protractor goes accordingly with the table or the table arm combo or by measuring the dostance from spindle to arm mechanism center! SECOND Yes i think too that the cart move when he used the flathead screwdriver THIRD He used scissors?? Wtf. Not a flathead screwdriver for sure :-)

So in order to align the cart, you don't have to be in the bullseye, you just have to be in the bullseye to check the actual alignment and overhang? How about making sure the cantilever is perpendicular? How do you check that if you can't clearly see it? I have a Music Hall mmf-2.2, and I've noticed that most of the replacement Tracker styli seem to have misaligned cantilevers, and rather than try to bend them back (they're also ridiculously fragile) I'd rather compensate during alignment.

This basic kind of protractor works but requires a some trial and error. More expensive protractors offer greater precision and ease and are worth it if you've invested a lot in your turntable.
