From www.kevincaron.com - Sculptor Kevin Caron gives a tour of this tool and shares tips and tricks for using any chopsaw ....
Caron first gives a tour of Evolution's Evo Chopsaw, a 14" metal cutting chopsaw with a toothed blade, as opposed to an abrasive blade. It gives cleaner cuts and smoother cuts, is relatively quiet, and creates a lot less dust.
A sturdy cover hides the blade in case you accidentally start the saw so you don't lose an arm. As you pull down the blade, the cover moves out of the way. The vise on this chopsaw also is made of metal, so it is sturdy, too. The saw vise control has a quick release for adjustment and a handwheel to tighten it. The backstop is heavier and taller than his old chopsaw.
Caron really loves this chopsaw's stout table - the table on his old chopsaw bent too easily. To prevent bending, this chopsaw has a heavy chunk of steel near where the blade lowers as well as a slot for the blade itself. "I think this is going to last a whole lot longer than my old saw," says Caron.
On the back of the vise backstop, there's a quick release so it can be set at anything from 90 to 45 degree angles. A set screw holds it in place; the Allen wrench to adjust it is housed in the base.
The saw lock is on the tool's side. If you just pull it out, the chopsaw relocks after your cut. That's fine for a single cut, but for cutting multiple pieces of metal, turn it 90 degrees to lock the chopsaw into an open position.
Caron also shows the saw's chip guard. It helps keep metal chips from the blade from flying toward the operator.
Lefthanded people might not like the placement of the safety switch on the trigger, which is easier for righthanded people to depress during use. You can press it lefthanded, but it's a little awkward.
Enough yakking! Let's give that chopsaw something to eat. Caron gets his safety equipment - sound mufflers and safety glasses - clamps the steel into the chopsaw's vise, and cuts through some 2" square tubing with 1/4" thick wall, providing 1/2" in total to cut through.
He also checked the sound level of the machine. It was 80 decibles without a load on it, and 81 decibles when cutting. Not much difference. Afterward, the cut looks great with almost a mirror finish, with a small burr at the end of the cut on the bottom.
A big secret to using this type of metal-cutting saw with a toothed blade is to not force it while cutting. The weight of your hand is enough to guide the blade downward. Give it time to cut. Forcing it overheats the blades, which then lose their sharpness and don't cut well. Give it time to chew.
The blades can be sharpened. One metal blade does the job of 20 abrasive blades, according to a sticker on the chopsaw. Caron says he gets 350 - 400 cuts before a blade gets dull and it takes a long time to cut. That's when he removes the blade, puts on a fresh blade, and has the dull one sharpened. The shop can even replace teeth. It costs about $60 to sharpen them. As long as you don't bend them, blades last a long time.
A new blade costs about $75 - 80 on Amazon. The Continental blades Caron gets from the saw sharpening shop cost about $200, but they last a lot longer. They are better steel, have a thicker blade and better teeth.
The Evo chopsaw also has a nice little chip tray under the blade that's easy to pull out, empty, and replace.
Caron is impressed with the machine. It's a good heavy saw, and more weight means more stability with smoother, straighter cuts. The cost? From about $350 at Sears to $430 elsewhere.
Caron is going back to work, so it's a great time to hit that "subscribe" button and then come out to www.kevincaron.com to see more how-to videos and his wild work.
Or stick around another moment to relate to every speaker's nightmare ....

Nice, Kevin. Also very timely. I just received my EVO Saw last week. So far, I've made ONE test cut; but like it immensely more than old abrasive disc saw. There's another good point: The saw blade diameter stays the same diameter over it's lifetime! (versus getting smaller with every cut like my abrasive). This means that I can cut larger-dimensioned steel with a blade that has had some use versus having to rotate the workpiece in the middle of cuts to get it into the blade. The saw comes with a mild-steel cutting blade. They also make a stainless steel-cutting blade that I will have to buy. I have a lot of scrap stainless that I cut up and make into stuff. I came across about 200' of stainless square and rectangular tubing and have projects in mind.

Nice review Kev. Your spot on about the abrasive blade and the dust/rusty friends driveway it creates. Keep up the good work. -Pidge

Nice video Kevin, glad you like it. One tip for cutting tubing would be to use the vise attachment the sent with it. Minimizing the cross sectional area makes the cuts faster and helps with blade life. I made a comparison video if you are interested on my channel.

I have the same saw in my barn. Its nice. I always assumed the right handed handle on the left side of the machine was a part of the safety design. Using your right hand means your head is left of the blade and far less likely to get hit with chips. And those chips are sharp and hot. On my first cut, I peeked around the blade and caught a chip on my lip. I haven't peeked again...

you should use the little jig they give you for cutting box,which keeps the box at and angle when cutting so the blade doesnt cut through a flat surface
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 4 года назад
I think that is for pipe. Never tried it on box. Have to give it a shot.
@grahamkelly8299
@grahamkelly8299 4 года назад
@@KevincaronSculpture with pipe, you begin and end the cut on a small point as the surface is round, but with box, if you flip it up using the little attachment, you also begin and end the cut at a small point. This will make your blade last longer. From what I've looked up, evolution actually have a helpful guide you can look up to help make your blade life better. Check it out, hope it helps. Oh and thanks to you for your own helpful tips, they helped me out on plenty of occasions

Good review. I have the evolution saw with the stamp steel base, cuts great would recommend it to anyone. I do wish now I had spent the extra money on this one reviewed with the heavier base and fence. I have purchased a new steel cutting Evolution blade from my local welding supply store for about $80.00 (US)

In the UK you get a vee shaped jaw for round stock. Try setting your square tube up corner (like a diamond) up and it will cut far quicker.

I bought a steel max branded chop saw, looks exactly the same as the one you reviewed. Awesome saw beautiful square cuts, not like a abrasive chop saw. So i had done my research into them before buying one and knew how not to use. So the blade started to dull and sent it into my local saw shop to get it sharped to be told that they couldn't because they die test the blades and it had 4 fractures in it. So after a lengthy discussion with them and going over certain factors, i had only cut 3mm thick material ( manual stats can cut 25.4mm) i am told that these blades are only designed to cut 0.6mm-1.6mm. One thing they did stat about the blade is that it looks more like a wood cutting saw blade (same as the one you reviewed) and not a metal version. So i cut 3mm-8mm thick material and would like to know how your blade holds up and if possible do a review on different blades and how they hold up long them because here in Australia blades start at $200.

Good video Kevin I’m interested in getting a evolution chop saw I’m debating on this saw and the rage 3 I like the rage 3 just because how easy it is to cut angle miter cuts compared to this saw but this saw is mor for a metal worker which is what I’m gonna be buying one for

I have a rage 2 at home and a rage 3 at work. The rage 3 has more flexibility so far as angle and miter cuts, but the rage 2 stands much better so far as durability. Don't try to cut though a weld. It will ruin the blade.

Thanks for the vid, Kevin. How about lateral deflection when making a cut from an angle. With my 14" abrasive blade saw, the blade will sometimes want to move sideways if I am cutting square tubing at a 45 deg angle and I am starting on an edge, not flat. I find slow starts into the material (let the blade do the work) seems to help somewhat. Are these types of blades / saws less prone to sideways deflection?
@KevincaronSculpture

Yes, these work much better at that.. Been really happy with the results..

Two very different saws! I use my horizontal bandsaw more than my chop saw. But when i just need to chop off a piece, the chop saw gets the job. And the chop saw is faster than the bandsaw.

Hey Kevin, I'm trying to decide between this saw and the rage 3 for cutting small metal pieces. I'm a hobbyist and will be doing small gates and trailer add-ons. I will be tigging most of my stuff, so with my limited tig skills it's really useful to get very accurate cuts so my work pieces mate up well. Does this saw make accurate angle cuts? Or would the rage3 be better?
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 7 лет назад
I think this one does just fine for weld ready cuts. Don't do many "small" pieces on this but feel it will handle the job.

Kevin what is better a cold cut chop saw or a band saw for cutting 45's tube
@KevincaronSculpture

It's more about the vise for holding the metal than the saw itself. Either do a great job long as the metal doesn't more...

These saws aren’t too expensive. Their blades are a good $100, or more. Are they giving their top blade with this, or a cheaper version? Also, a blade for stainless, and a blade for aluminum is really needed. Stainless will chew the regular steel blade quickly, and aluminum will gum it up.

Nice review Kevin. I do have a question though. What is the advantage of a chop saw vs a horizontal band saw??
@mlindholm
@mlindholm 8 лет назад
The cut is much cleaner with a Tungsten Carbide Tooth (the TCT in their marketing materials) saw, vs a bandsaw cut. Not to say a bandsaw cut is bad, they're not. They can be very good. But a TCT saw cut can be extremely precise, and a mirror finish, with just minor deburring necessary.
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 8 лет назад
But on the con side the chop saw has a smaller throat. I can cut the bottom off a 9 inch diameter compressed gas bottle with the horizontal band saw but the chop saw won't come close to that size.

Hi Kevin, I have a question about the DeWalt, or any other chop saw for that matter. When I make a square cut the saw goes through the metal like butter however making a 45 miter takes forever. I realize that I am cutting more metal. I am using the stock 66 tooth blade. I know from my experience as a finish carpenter that more teeth give me a cleaner cut on wood. Will stepping up to a blade with more teeth increase the speed of my cut in metal or is it just the nature of the miter that it is going to take so long. My blade is still very sharp. Thanks for any input you can give me.

Thank you. Your videos, attendance to your website, and the practicality of the subject matter are all top notch and appreciated. The down to earth, common shop subjects you choose have been great, e.g., bending square tubing in the HFT round tubing bender...and many others. Personal preference on subject matter: down to earth tools, jigs, procedures, materials, for the common everyday hobby and shop addict who also does serious work.

one more question: could I simply get a metal replacement blade and use it on my dewalt 14" chopper (the dewalt is still good and can't justify the Evo right now, though it will be my next).

If it is a wood chop saw then no. The wood saws run at a much higher rp m and you will burn up the blade.

No problem doing this when one is honest and covers accurately the pros and cons. Kevin is straight forward and objective, I found the info on new and different tools beneficial and did not have the feeling that he was trying to make a buck. His credibility is excellent. Besides, just who is going to pay for all the time and trouble he puts into these videos that we all profit from. It is a win-win situation in the end. Sounds like you have the flu. Get well soon. As for the saw, well, I liked mine and think the technology is really cool. However, what made me run back to my bandsaw: EVERY SINGLE TIME you replace a dull blade for a new, quality one you're, essentially, spending enough money to buy a whole other chop saw. Cool as hell but hopelessly impractical...unless of course you have either a limitless budget or a crazy popular RU-vid channel ; )
