How to Use a Horizontal Bandsaw - and Why You Would Want to Use It - Kevin Caron

From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron shows how to use his new toy - uh, tool! - which cuts metal like it's butter ....
Caron has been thinking about getting a horizontal bandsaw for a while because of some of the bigger things he cuts - including cutting the bottoms off of compressed gas bottles - that just won't fit in his chopsaw.
He finally chose an Ellis 1800 Series (he notes that doesn't receive any compensation from Ellis).
With the help of his apprentice, Pokie the dog, Caron gives a tour of the machine. The horizontal bandsaw has a pair of trucks: metal wheels with rubber tires that hold the saw blade. It also has an adjustment with a bearing to keep the blade positioned correctly vertically.
There's another set of roller bearings that position the blade side to side to keep everything lined up. Then there's another set behind the stop where the metal goes. So the blade is held nice and straight and even.
Using a knob on the other side of the machine, you can loosen up the front set of rollers so you can slide it back and forth to accommodate whatever size of material you are cutting. You want to keep it pretty close to the width of whatever you are cutting so the blade doesn't have any room to twist - you want to keep it as tight as you can.
One of the reasons Caron chose this saw is that it is a mitre saw. With his chopsaw, you have to move the fence to cut different angles - the blade always goes up and down at the same spot. With this saw, the blade moves and the table and your work stay stationary. It also a nice degree wheel with a pointer on it so you can get your angles set just right.
The other side of the saw has a hydraulic cylinder with an adjustment, or bleed, knob that enables the saw to feed by itself. You use the knob to adjust the speed of the cut. For thick metals, you slow it down; for thinner metals, you can speed it up.
The bandsaw uses its own weight to make the cut, which means you have a constant feed pressure and don't have to have a hand on it while it's cutting. This helps prevent overheating the blade or dulling it faster than necessary.
The machine has a nice clamp to hold your metal - the cam forces it in a little more, too, so the piece you are working on is held nice and tight.
You can also release the cylinder with its quick disconnect pin and pull the springs off the back of it so you can tip the head up vertically. The machine has an auxiliary table, which makes it into a vertical bandsaw for doing cutouts. Pretty slick!
This bandsaw will run on either 110 or 220. Just switch some wires in the box to convert it to 220.
It's time to cut some metal! Caron has a piece of 3" heavy wall metal pipe with a gnarly end on it where he cut it off with a plasma cutter. He wants to true up the end, which is a good test for this horizontal bandsaw.
Starting the machine is easy. It has a red panic button in case something goes wrong, and a green start button. The off switch is hooked into a bar with a stop on it. When the bandsaw goes all the way down, it pushes the switch and turns off the machine.
Caron pushes the green button and opens up the bleed valve. The head starts to lower slowly. He is erring on the side of caution right now as he gets used to the bandsaw, which cuts through the 3" pipe in about a minute. "It's a whole lot quieter than my chopsaw," he says.
Caron is now considering whether he'll be able to replace his chopsaw with this horizontal bandsaw. He shows the chopsaw, which has tables in front and behind it with roller wheels on them. He has his bar stock on the other side of a door, so he can bring it right in from outside when he's ready to cut.
Replacing the chopsaw with the big horizontal bandsaw, which is about 65" deep, would put the cutting area out farther. So he'd have to move his table, move his jump shear, and move the door in the wall. Maybe he can move the sink and make another table to go to it. He's just had the bandsaw a short while, so he wants to think about his options before making any changes. Caron is looking forward to letting it do all the work he'd normally have to do by hand, though.
Caron is ready to go back to work, so you have time to go out to his Web site at www.kevincaron.com and sign up for his newsletter, watch more how-to videos, and see his wild sculptures.
Well, you might want to take one more minute and watch Caron flub his measurements ....

Kevin, You don't "settle" for an Ellis band saw, you scrimp and save and lust after an Ellis. At over $3000 it is a luxury that few of us will ever be able to add to our shops. Lucky man.

Kevin, Thanks for sharing your new saw with us. If I have the room for both saws I would keep them both. The chop saw is real nice for doing smaller pieces of light stock. In the welding shop at school I have both. The nice thing is it provides more than one station where kids can be cutting. In your case you could be cutting up large pipe on the Ellis and while you are waiting for it to complete the cut you can be cutting small light stuff with the chop saw. All The Best! Mike

What a super-nice horizontal bandsaw. I'm sure it's much better than the small horizontal bandsaw that I had years ago. It was tremendously frustrating to use. The blade would tend to not cut straight down, causing crooked cuts. When I sold my mechanical contracting business over 7 years ago, the saw went with the company. I didn't lose any sleep over it. Now if it'd been a nice one like yours . . . . . .

Band saws are very popular in a machine shop where there is a lathe. A professional stationary band saw is more precise than any other saw in the world and cuts your material perfectly perfect and leaves it ready to start machining. Also, these saws are known for cutting stock material all day long and you make money just from doing that. Yep! As for chop saws, they are precise enough to get you started in your welding jobs. I am a welder and I don't have a lathe, so, guess what kind of saw I have.

I just bought a band saw to replace my chop saw. I like that its an accurate cut, not showers of sparks, neighbors up and down the street wont hear it, don't have to breathe the chop saw mystery dust. Band saw blades are not cheap, but I think it's worth it.

Out of all my metal cutting methods bent vintage Racine 14” power hacksaw Gets used the most. Perfect for all I need to cur. And it cuts up to 6” solid square. Blades last forever. It’s pretty quick all things considered. Coolant, hydraulic down feed, shuts itself off. One of the best features I like more than a bandsaw is it lifts itself when the cut is finished. And has a clutch so doing multiple cuts is very quick and easy.

@rubarb0406
@rubarb0406 4 года назад
Kevin, it has been ages since you posted this, however, I hope you are still using the saw. I have a recommendation for you to consider. If you will obtain a circular wire brush (a couple of inches in diameter) and mount it behind the bearing guides on a shaft that will allow it to rotate and be in contact with the teeth of the blade, it will function to assist the blade in unloading metal chips. The theory is that it will increase the life of the blade, the tires on the saw (if it has some), and deposit more chips in one location.

I should of bought the Ellis years ago, finally just bought one and all I can say is, I should of never waited. It replaced my 4x6 bandsaw which was very long in the tooth. The chop saw never gets used, I think I used it twice in the past 3 years and that was only because I couldn't make the angle work in the 4x6. No issues with the Ellis....

Nice Horz Bandsaw Kevin. I I have a Craftex Horz that is about half the size as your Ellis. Your Bandsaw is an industrial model. Very nice. I noticed there is no cool tool reservoir. Is this an option? Seems you may want that when cutting large solid stock. As for getting rid of the Chop saw, I wouldn't. I find I need it for cutting harder materials that a bandsaw blade can't. i'e a weld.

Kevin or anyone, should I buy a 7x12 heavy duty bandsaw or a makita cold cut saw? I'm new to fabrication, this is a hobby for me but I would like to make a few extra bucks to help pay the bills. I've had the 4x6 bandsaw loved it but had problems with the head moving 1/8 " on the decline away from the machine. It boils down to a poor design. I had an abrasive chop saw and hated it so the only option left is the cold cut saw. I live in a small town and there is no one to sharpen blades. But I don't have the money yet for the 7x12 bandsaw. I need to get back to fabricating. If you had to choose between the two which would you choose. FYI I'm making house hold furniture and some industrial application projects. Thanks Greg

you have it backwards, you slow the feed way down for thin material so avoid stratling with the teeth...cutting thin materials with a fast feed rate will eat up blades faster than you can replace them.
