Thank you so much. Sadly I seen this till at around the 1:15 mark. Good info from then on but I really didn’t want to hear him bragging about his “great” compass for over a minute. Thought he was trying to sell it. “This is a instructional video...... if you don’t have a compass like mine well sir YOU SUCK! It cost 100 bucks and I got it free. Ok here is how you start. First pick up your pos compass like this mmmmmkkk? “ 😂
THANK YOU! Finally someone shows how to find other directions besides north. I've watched so many videos and they only explain up to finding North and then I'm lost. I've been feeling like an idiot trying to figure it out myself.
If you are lost and don't have a compass pay attention to the sun as it crosses the sky and you can figure out N S E W. Once you figure out where north is you only need a clearing and a straight stick and you can determine the approximate time. Stand the stick straight up on the ground face north and once you get practiced at this you can get within a half hour easy. The size of the stick is not matter, a twig 3 or 4 inches is what I used. Learned this during my summers on the beach as a teen on Santa Monica Bay.
Plus, the watch and hand/horixon sky time method is a helpful backup. Blackie Thomas has a video where he used a bottle cap as a 'watch face' in conjunction with the determined hand time. Some of those cheapie metal multi-tool survival wallet cards have that notched navigation hole that looks like a sun which can be used in the same manner (as the bottle cap).
granted this video could have been 2minutes shorter, but THANK YOU!! This other video i tried watching was 15minutes long and useless. This video was much more helpful and easier to watch/listen too as well.
went through my dads drawer.found a military compass...its been sitting there for 10years...but i never really knew how it works or how to use it...now im on youtube hehe
Great video for beginners! This was very helpful for me and my son trying to figure this out. All the other videos I was finding were on another level of complained lol. This was perfect. Thanks!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING I never use compass in my life and I am traveling alone, hope the compass will guide me where I am going. THANK YOU AGAIN good video THUMBS UP, take care.
Watch the series, I should be alive on prime. You will see how Important is it to be able to use a compass. It’s really not a joke when it come to using one, it can save your life. I got lost in Nfld Canada 🇨🇦 before and it was not a fun experience at the time. A snowstorm came of the ocean really fast and covered my snow shoe tracks when I was setting up base camp. I walked in circles for hours wanting to leave and could not do so. I was by myself and it was getting very dark and cold. Anxiety sets in very quick when you put dark thoughts in your head. If I had really known how to use a compass well that would have not happen to me, so I blame myself for being so Naïve. Learn learn learn how to use one. Thanks again for your video.
You had your compass during your snowstorm in Canada? Before you started out, did you know what direction you wanted to go in? And you didn't know how to "reverse" positions when you wanted to come back? You made it okay? ❤
I'm a fairly intelligent person. But for some reason, a compass and how to use one has totally confused me. Don't know why. This is the first compass type video that I understand!!!!! Thank You!
I feel the same way. I had a brain block with this and I have literally watched HUNDREDS of videos. I think it really starts to make more sense on how to use one if one begins with learning about topographic maps 1st, both the map and border (legend/key+) features and information.
Thank you for this video. Every single video I saw before now confused the crap out of me. Most talk about all these different things on the compass and I am usually like what??? Then I am giving up, felt like I was never going learn this. Until now, Honestly I watched this from beginning to end and was like are you f-ing kidding me thats it, that is so easy I feel stupid. So again thank you for solving this that so many others over complicated for no darn reason. One step on how to find north, south, East and west with no hassle.
Thanks for this, I've been wanting to know how to use a compass for a long time, your explanation was easy to understand ...now to check your next video
As you were showing us the Compass, and by the way thank you for the good video. It dawned on me,,, compasses don’t care about one’s own truth. Oprah Winfrey did a big show asking people to tell their truth, not the truth but their truth. People don’t realize that there is only one north, not there north,, but true North. No matter which way you had your red dial West east south etc. it’s still pointed north. Nowadays people say if you’re born with testicles, that doesn’t make you a man. I agree it does not make you a man but it does make you male. Weird how people have their truth these days. Happy trails and thanks for the great video. Luke
Being born with testicles doesn't make you a male. A friend of mine was born with testicles and discovered at VA hospital later that he also had internal female organs. So "he" wasn't actually exclusively a male. Also, you can be born as a chromosomal XY male but if you have androgen insensitivity syndrome, your testosterone converts to estrogen and you'll develop as a female despite your legit chromosomal profile. So your conclusion is erroneous.
Technically there is true north and magnetic north--but I won't let that subtract from your statement haha. I totally agree with you. We live in a time where people have the ability to "create" their own reality. I suppose it's always been possible, but it's so much easier with our online outlets and social media platforms. You can literally search for anything and probably find a page to support your views--regardless of whether or not that view is "accurate" or factual.
"Trust your compass" Unless you're holding a rifle or something metallic close to it.... Also move around 100ft or so if you're really unsure (could be standing on an iron deposit)
A powerful video, I just given this onto a colleague who was doing a little bit evaluation on this. And he the truth is purchased me breakfast as a result of I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the deal with! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love studying extra on this topic. If attainable, as you develop into expertise, would you mind updating your youtube channel with more particulars? It is extremely helpful for me. Huge thumb up for this video publish!
@@manlyman1393 I think what he means is that, the north where this kinds of compass point to is not the actual north. And it has declination depending on one's region as he says. So you need to consider the declination in finding the actual north. I'm a beginner only I'm not sure also
I was always curious on how compass helps in for example: trying to find your way back home if you're lost in a forest and u only have a compass, you'd probably have better chances tracing your way back honestly.
Look up taking a safety bearing. This should be done before heading into the woods. It's what you can use to backtrack. A safety bearing can be in the direction of where your car is parked or a known road or "handrail" feature on a topo map. It could be your back bearing degree mark depending on how you're facing or your direction of travel. Again, taken BEFORE you start wandering off.
I'm missing something. The needle is pointing dead left at the beginning, which tells you north is that way. All the other cardinal points automatically follow from that piece of information. What is the purpose of doing all the stuff afterwards, like lining up the arrow with the mark at the top, and rotating the compass around, only to have the needle still pointing where it was always pointing anyway. What do you learn by doing that that the compass hadn't already told you?
you did not miss a thing...the OP just want to show people how to "correctly" use this compass by aligning the direction you want to go at the top of the compass white line...That is it. You actually do not need to use that white line at all because the north direction is all you need to know to find which direction you should go...
One thing people should know about compass is that compasses do not point to true north pole located at 90 latitude north, rotation axis of earth. Compasses point to magnetic north pole located at 80 latitude north. Since most people don't realize this, many have fooled themselves into thinking they have reached north pole when in reality they are thousands of km off from the true north pole, rotation axis of earth. True north pole and magnetic north pole do not coincide with each other. Same with south pole.
"Brunton", say "grun-ton, now add a "B" in place of "G". Absolutely a great brand. "Sunnto" say "Sun" like the sun, now say toe like one of you'r toe's. Another good choice that works. I do prefer Brunton but they both work the same. There U go!
Ahhh. I'm confused. You said finding north turn the compus until the red arrow points to the N, North. But when you're finding south it's the white part of the arrow that you show pointing to the S, South??
Todd Motox: Yes there is (in most places...not all). Its called magnetic declination (or magnetic variation) and it means the difference between magnetic North and Grid (map) North. See video at link below for a better explanation. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F7snpkOfis8.html
If you compass just has a N on it but no other letters to know where east, west, or south is remember one of these tips if you go clock wise from the N. Never Eat Soggy Worms (North East South West) or remember opposite of North is South and then think WE (west east) so if N is up you know South is down and spell WE left is west right side is east........im not the greatest at explaining but I hope that helps either never eat soggy worms or WE.
I live in the panhandle of Florida when Im in the Gulf and get lost or Fogs rolls in I just go Due North… like he said trust your compass not your feelings!
Super quick would be 30 seconds. Super simple would explain why the white end is showing the direction you need instead of the other two arrows. You can take out a good four and a half minutes. But thank you for the info.
The tutorial assumes you know where you are. If you don't what then? Look for a tutorial on how to use USGS maps to learn land navigation and the real way to use a compass.
It is not true! The compass doesn't show you the geographic NORTH! it's showing you the MAGNETIC NORTH wich can be off to depending on what region you're in. Watch other videos on what magnetic north is, and how to properly use a compass. This video is showing you what basically a compass does, NOT how to use one. The owner of this video should've mentioned this in the title. Thumbs down for you sir.
i think the actual north the compass points towards will always be Northwest slightly northwest, and the real north of the eart hwill always be... north, this has to do with the magnetic field of the earth and yes believe it or not there have been quite a few cases were the polarity of earth itself changed somehow someway, it is very rare to occur i believe
@@ernestochang1744: The magnetic North can be either East or West of "True" (geographic) North....it depends where you are on the Earth. In some places True & magnetic North will be in the same direction. Google "magnetic declination" for more information.
That's what i though after looking at other video's. How do you factor in declination with just a compass if you don't have a map or electronic device.?
Hi, I have a question, maybe look stupid but I broke my compass because of freezing, pretty cold in winter, so my question is how do you know if it's good for winter or not, maybe I buy a cheap one, but I really donty want to happen again, I always have 2 or 3 now just in case but I just want to make sure it wont freeze, I was thinking try to put it in the freezer for a day or 2 to see, but you may have a better solution, thank you.
Please don’t take this the wrong way, but you can’t follow the red arrow on the inside with the examples you used. You used north and south, pretty basic but you said red. Another way is to line up your north needle and while that is set, set your direction or degrees and move the red arrow on inside to the direction you want to go, but with the red arrow pointing to your desired direction and the floating needle point up north, you will go in whatever direction you select. The video directions will have you making a complete circumnavigable route around the globe.
Basic information but it will keep a person from continually walking in a circle and therefore you will hopefully walk out of your situation. Remember never, never go into a unfamiliar area without a compass. Woods, water, or desert.
I park my truck on road and am facing direction I want to walk in.i would than line up arrow in red lines and that would tell me which way I'm heading?than when I'm at destination,i would just go opposite of what I came,or would I have find true north again?
Suunto compasses are NOT $100. Maybe some of the very high-end ones are. But the very excellent Suunto M3 model only cost about $30 and is a great choice. (and it's "Brunton", not "Burton")
I tried to put my home address in a compass so I wouldn’t have any trouble getting home but couldn’t figure out how to put it in. Just kidding man I learned how to read a compass when I was in Boy Scouts good video.
