2022 Update: This will not work with the new Minecraft launcher from the Microsoft store. You much use the legacy launcher which can be officially downloaded here: www.minecraft.... (once on the page download Minecraft for Windows 7/8, this will download the legacy launcher).

UPDATE NOV 2021: You need to use the old Minecraft launcher for this to work as you cannot open the Minecraft launcher downloaded from the Microsoft Store in Steam. If you are having problems: • Choose Minecraft Launcher in Steam if you don't see Minecraft. •If the controller does not work in game, in big picture mode, find minecraft and look for controller options and uncheck "Allow Desktop Configuration in Launcher". • If the game crashes, try to disable the steam overlay. In the steam (not big picture), in the top left hand corner click settings. Choose In-Game, then uncheck "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game".

There is no option to uncheck that under properties. It jus shows where the program files are and “set launch options...” my mine craft crashes right before control configs load from steam every single time.

I do all my controller configurations correctly but when i press play, it opens Minecraft on a second screen and the controller...doesnt work. I still have to use my track pad.

@@zorulka3663 try this "Open up the launcher (either from steam or from your .exe file) and select your regular minecraft profile from the dropdown (most likely you'll already have it selected, you'll have to do this for every profile that you'll want to use with the controller) and then select "edit profile". This will bring you to the profile editor GUI and all you simply need to do is under the first section, select "Launcher Visibility" and chose "Keep launcher open". This will force steam to think you're playing the launcher "game" after you launch the real Minecraft instance and allow you to use configurable controls in-game."

I did all of this and after it launches and pulls the game up it stops working. I hit F11 like you said to go in and out of full screen mode and it still won't work.

@@abbieguest9771 (copied from another comment) this worked for me: When you're in manage shortcuts, click on "controller options" and uncheck both boxes. Press okay. Then go to your controller configurations and you should hover over the layout you want to use for minecrafft; export the layout to the personal use section. FINALLY you want to back to the home menu in big picture and go to settings. Click on "base configurations", next click on "desktop config" and make your minecraft layout the default. Had trouble figuring this out for the longest time then it finally started working for me

I used a community and my own and the only commands that work are the ones that are mouse based.(mining and placing) and looking around. But that’s it, not sure what im doing wrong. Ps4 controls btw

@@sleepingturtle32 Managing your inventory is a nightmare because you have to control your cursor with the joystick and there's no quick way to manage your inventory. I recommend Mr. Crayfish's Controllable mod, although it's still not as good as the Bedrock Edition controller support.

Question, is there any way to map the x button (ps4 controller) as select? instead of having to use the trigger? I followed the video, thank you and it worked. Except when I wanted to change the hotbar to another item, the button on my Xbox controller didn’t work. I changed the controller because I thought the button physically didn’t work but that wasn’t true. Tried changing the button manually myself but it also didn’t work. My steam is in picture mode and I launched Minecraft from there, every other button works except the hotbar

You know what's cool? I'm probably getting a paddle controller soon. So if I run Steam's mapping through it then paddle mapping to act as a secondary A button, then theoretically I can jump in Minecraft Java without taking my thumb off of the stick.

I don’t recommend playing using controller with mods, as if you have a lot of mods that have keybinds that are vital but require keys such as Q or / or whatever, and on a controller you only have like 4 buttons so, be careful. Also I like that Halo Reach screensaver you got there in the background...nice

This method has worked for me in the past, but today when I tried again everything but the controller stick was working fine in Minecraft. The controller stick was working in the calibration settings just not Minecraft.

Steam works great, but if you ever want to play split screen on Java, you'll need a controller mod to get multiple controllers to work. I wish Steam had multiple controller support.

When I load up Minecraft and try to test my controls, the changes haven’t stuck. My controller is still not connected to Minecraft. I have suspicion that it is due to the game, in steam being labeled Minecraft Launcher, rather than Minecraft. If this is the case, how exactly do I find Minecraft? I followed every step and it's still not working. Controller works in big picture mode, I click play, launcher comes up, end of controller. I click play in the launcher with mouse, and as expected, the controller doesn't work in-game at all. I use the new launcher (it has the grey creeper icon), but steam does open it. I also disabled "Allow Desktop Configuration in Launcher". No idea why it's not working... so frustrating.

@@yes7436 yes, but i think controller players have an advantage in terms strafing, because of the 360 movement thing of the analog stick, compared to wasd keys

@@Juttjuttjuttjutt4 no because on java controller is not supported so you have to remap your controller to keyboard controls so you won’t get 360° movement

I have done this but now whenever i load minecraft through big picture it freezes at the same point in the mojang loading screen every time, any help would be appreciated!

@@markeylarobinson8081 hey so, load thought big picture once it freezes close the game, then exit big picture and then just load minecraft through stream (regularly not big picture) then it should work :)

U don’t need to set the steam thing up on Mac it worked for me without when I had a Mac about a year ago

As Valu yeah but my controller isn’t even vibrating, it’s not connecting to my computer in any way. I’m using a data transfer cable which is what’s supposed to be used and I’ve tried multiple controllers and drivers. Nothings working. Is there someone I can call to help me out or something

awesome find for this issue i am a techy guy but i didnt know theres a work around for using a controller on java edition i was just expecting it to work like in the windows 10 normal edition thanks for this solution @TheHowToGuy123

Same here, just spent $30 on the full game and nothing works past the Big Picture ‘PLAY’ screen. Controller just stops working right after that

i can't find the minecraft.exe file, only minecraftlauncher.exe when i tried launching the game with minecraftlauncher.exe the minecraft launcher started, (not in steam), and i could only mess with stuff using my mouse. i started the launcher anyways and the controller didn't work, even after configuring it. i have no minecraft.exe file, i've looked everywhere for it. any ideas? edit: solved the problem, just downloaded the minecraft.exe file from minecraft.net :)

@@alphaalvey5029 i found a solution! i didn't actually have it on my computer, download the minecraft.exe file from this website! www.minecraft.net/en-us/download/alternative/ you'll still have all your worlds and you'll keep the launcher.exe too, it doesn't mess with your game. just use the minecraft.exe file instead of the launcher and everything will work fine.
