Here's my general experience in using the eurail pass on trains - Germany, Netherlands, Czech = Eurail friendly (can show up on day and no mandatory reservations) - Spain, Italy = Not bad (Mandatory reservations but doesn't cost much and can be reserved on the day) - France (or any trains to/from france)= Crappy (Not only mandatory reseravtions, but a limited quota for eurail passes on high speed rail there)
@vagabrothers

+GazzaOak pretty spot on, France is difficult with the Eurail pass and almost always requires reservations and additional fees

Hi! So I was wondering, how do the reservations work exactly? Like how do you pay for them if it's one of the trains (and you're taking 3 or 4 other ones)?
@allisoffmusic
@allisoffmusic 6 лет назад
Hi! Did you have any trouble when you did your reservations one day before departure? I was wondering about international trains in Spain, France or Italy for example. Also, is it common for trains to be full in those countries? I'm aware of the fact that we must pay a reservation fee, but I'm concerned about doing so in the ticket stand at the station. Paying through the eurail online service sounds like a scam. They add 8 euros to the reservation fee! I hope you can help me because I'm kind of lost with all the weird info they provide on the website. Hope you are ok

I did a eurotrip 1 year ago with interrail pass (i'm european) in the spring. I have to say that I traveled across the Alps and it was the most beautiful place i've ever seen! Also a good way to save money is couchsurfing. In Europe couchsurfing is very good way to meet the locals and get to know the culture there. Nice tips guys!

Hope you guys had fun here :) But yeah Eurorail/Interrail is fast and easy way to go on tour in Europe and as said Its flexible and great for long distance. In Scandinavia and Swiss trains its often good for short trips as well. If you only doing one country, there some times are better offers or standart tickets are better (You can get from one end to the other in Hungary and other former east-european countries for less than 30$, often even less than 20$). You can travel trough all of Germany for 40€/45$ a day, if you are 2ppl for 50$ or 3ppl 60$ on regional trains. If you are 2 people for 29€/34$ in austria. Traintickets normally can be baught 3 month in advance in Europe, booking well in advance makes tickets often cheaper, but you are not flexible. Well and since its Europe and only 2 countries have english as first language, especially in the countryside ticket offices dont speak english. This making Eurrail better if you are first time in Europe and want to see 7 capitals in one week. Best tipp to stay cheap is through couchsurfer and if you eat between 12-3pm, many countries have lunch deals, then you can eat lighter in the evening

What most people don't realize, is that if you buy a regular unrestricted fare from say Warsaw to Lisbon, you can stop anywhere en route, and spread the travel out across several weeks -- amazing how much you can see on just one ticket...

This reminded me of my first EuRail Trip 49 years back in 1973 October (18 th. October 1973)!. It was First Class Unlimited Travel Pass for 1 month and I had paid $ 150 ! (I was 23 Years old then) And again I had travelled by EuRail back in 1994 October for 1 month. I had paid $ 630 for unlimited travel in First Class ! (I was 46 Years old then & traveled with my wife) I have preserved All my Color Photo Memories of both my EuRail Trips) I have still preserved those passes !

My husband and I just spent close to $2000 AUD on these tickets and now are having trouble making reservations. If I had my time again we would not use the EU rail system and just book the trains from point to point. I have probably had the worst customer service experience that I have ever had. Don't bother.

I thought I read one trip per day. My daughter and I are taking our first European trip next summer...18 days! I plan to get Eurail passes because we want to do Ireland, UK, France, Switzerland, and Italy. I'm confused about the on/off in one day. We've never taken a trip like this (backpacking our way). We plan to vlog/blog about the experience so friends/family can see our experience. If Eurail wants to let us have some tics, we'd love to make an advertisement for them about how easy it is to travel (even for novice travelers) using their services!

Couple of suggestions ... try keeping the background music to min. level and avoid talking over each other as combination of it both was making it bit difficult to pick some important bits. Now ... about the tickets, if you buy the Eurail ticket in advance then how do you later on purchase the seat reservations? And thanks for all the useful information.

All the countries that you visiting are fairly crap for the eurail pass. All will require reservations (unless if you want to travel really slow trains). Italy and Spain, its cheap (10 euro for Italy for any route and Spain will vary) and you can often reserve the seats on the same day. France on the other hand, is very difficult to reserve seats (especially on TGV), because they only give out an limited quota for eurail pass holders, and can cost quite a fair bit. I went lucky reserving a seat on the barca to paris leg (i assume you going to do that considering the route), but at a 6am departure, and i reserved the seat 4 days out for my travel (the rest of the other timing were sold out for eurail passes). But do not hinge on that luck. So with France (or just simply any trains which go/from to France), book way ahead of time. Spain to France is a bit of a nightmare, but not as bad in comparison to what i heard to from France to Italy, in which eurail passes for high speed trains are limited (and some trains don't even take eurail passes).

I think it's better to have seat reservation for a crowded route, otherwise, you will have difficulty to find a place to sit. I ever need to sit at the train hallway because the train is full and I didn't reserve the seat beforehand.

@MAGirlable

Eurail is more expensive if you have a limited schedule. It's only good if you're going to be there for a couple of months and have a very flexible schedule. I live in the UK and have travelled across the Continent by rail. Booked a lot of overnight first class sleepers about 3 months in advance and saved 40% on Eurail prices all things considered. If you're planning a trip with a specific time limit, book tickets yourself and shop around. Much cheaper.

@MAGirlable

You can literally book those tickets online without a Eurail pass. It shouldn't cost very much. You can even just show up at the station and buy them. Thalys runs a service from Brussels to Paris. For Bruges to Brussels I'd just show up and buy tickets on the day. All this information will come up on a Google search.

Eurail charges an insane amount of money for "Reservation fees" They make it sound like it's easily avoidable but it's 78 euros from Barcelona to Paris and the only way around it is to take a 23 hour route that takes 2 travel days and 10 different train connections. Save your money people, do a single country pass

Are there staffed ticket windows in the Stuttgart and Munich airports, where one can get the Eurail Pass valdated prior to travel? Or....must one buy a machine ticket to the main train stations in town, and then have the pass validated?
@deboraz455

I have never used a Eurail pass so a few more questions. So, do you buy a pass and it's like a small book and you take it with you on the trains and just show them the pass when they come around and all is good? I'm not getting the process. Don't you need a seat number? how would you get that? I've been in Rome and taken a train to Florence. I bought the ticket, then found the train, went to the right box car and sat in the seat listed on the ticket.

Sounds good and everything but this doesn't help me at all. I'm from the Caribbean and there are no trains here. I went to the website and it seems so complicated. I have only ten days in Europe and I want to make the best of it. I don't mind purchasing the pass. How long does it take to travel from Paris, to Italy, to Amsterdam and back again? I'm worried that u may not see much. Do confusing.
@emrihazemens
@emrihazemens 8 лет назад
+maria cummings What I would recommend is googling "Train (country)". Traveling from Paris to Rome using the SNCF, which is France's own railway company, would take 10h29m if you take the train at 10am. If you use a night train it will take 20h33m and is almost twice as expensive. Rome to Amsterdam from 1pm until the next day at 9am using Trenitalia. And roughly 4 hours from Amsterdam back to Paris using NS.

What about your shopping purchases when backpacking? Do you just post things home direct from a store?

Question! I'm a little confused about how to actually book the train. I just bought a pass, and online it says that I need to book the train like a minimum of 10 days in advance (?) and they'll mail your physical reservation? How did you actually reserve and book your train? Just by going to the ticket booth? Pleas explain, thanks!
