I was trained in the Marines to focus on the target because in a combat situation you're going to be complete focused on the threat by nature. Do our branches have different training? I know nothing of Navy marksmanship standards.

After taking issue with one of your other videos (aim v trigger), feel I must now give credit where it's due. I made a focus string and exercised with it over a weekend. When I went to the range on Monday I couldn't believe the results. First, I was able to truly focus on the font sight without effort. That is shooting left eye/left hand and right eye right hand. Prior to this I was never able to focus clearly on the post with the right eye, so ended up with a flash sight picture. And as far as the scores - quantum leap! After six months on a plateau I shattered my best-to-beat with both hands in one session. The boost in performance showed from the very first shot. it amazed me. Eye exercise isn't new to me, been doing it for decades. But using this bead string as you instruct is the best exercise for shooting - near instant results, instead of weeks. Thanks for sharing it.
I'm watching this video for the first time and i've never found on youtube an instructor with such a great preparation. This is demonstrated by the use of Brock's string.
What helped me was having my bead up at 6 inches as Chris suggested and then crossing my eyes "hard", kind of like when you're a kid and goofing around. I then relaxed my cross-eyedness until the bead came into focus and looked like how Chris described it. I played around with how much cross-eyedness I needed to use and figured out the minimum amount needed to get the effect. I then changed the distance and performed the same steps. Wow can't wait to use this the next time I go to the range.
Your system helped me immediately. I watched another video on front sight focus from you last night and went to the range today. Immediate positive results! But I’m not satisfied yet. Love your videos. I'm in the military and we shoot frequently, but my focus is way better on rifles than handguns. Definitely like to see different training perspectives and it's helping a lot.
There's an FDA approved device called an Eyeport that trains your eyes to "team." I bought one to help with vision issues, but people without impaired vision use them to train eyes to work similarly to what this video is about. The clinical trials are impressive. I've had mine close to ten years, and it's held up just fine. Awesome video. I'm grateful to see this type of instruction.
I have this product. I am a beginner, and at advanced age. I tried the exercises and found it remarkably helpful. I will continue to practice. I cannot wait to start shooting my chalk targets.
Found some beads at home and tried it out. At first my eyes shifted focus to the further beads, following the line, but after practicing for a bit they started to stay on one bead and didn't shift focus. Sometimes the focus came only from one eye. Probably because I was trying to focus both on the focus bead and on the other beads, but trying it for awhile taught my eyes to both stay focused on the same target. Amazing practice!
Excellent! Got the book, got the beads attached on my door knob, works fine! Cannot yet focus very quickly on my front sights when switching between targets; but last time we practiced field shooting in snow and storm at 100 yards by pistol-shooting of 6 shoots in 11 seconds I hit bulls-eye in the chest on military targets (a camouflage soldier-doll target) and I could sense the hit in my body even before the instructor at my training called it out. I can say by experience that staying with Chris advices have developed skills fast!

Chris, great tool! Just got one of your focus strings, and did the exercise for the first time. Really amazing how the "X" moves as your focus moves down the string! Thanks Chris! I often thought much could be done with eye exercises and this is great (bought mine on Amazon). I’ve extended these into various saccadic (fast eye) movements of various types along with gaze stabilization exercises that help to get on target. I have an instrument called a Saccadometer that measures velocity, latency, accuracy of the eyes in the horizontal plane to give objectivity the effect these exercises. I would think some shooters struggle (most likely from hits to the head) with eye alignment and the importance of correcting the eyes is vital to hitting targets. Keep up the good work.
Mr. Sajnog, thank you for a life of service to me and our country. I noticed in this video that you, like me, require glasses to read these days. I don’t know about you but I’m also no longer able to focus on my front sight. It appears my arms have shrunk as I’ve aged! Other than investing in a red dot sight, can you recommend a solution that would enable me to improve my accuracy? Do you wear prescription shooting glasses? Front sight focus has been on of my biggest struggles of late, but when I get that focus, my distance shooting is much improved. I have the Brock string now and will get right on practicing now. Thanks for this instruction!
I was with the United States Army Marksmanship Unit back in the early 80's. We were into focusing on the front sight way back then; just not that hard. It is a natural eye thing and for sure a critical point of precision shooting. Great to see that the Navy Seals finally caught up to this!! The Seals finally got into precision shooting over the last 30 years. Prior to that, they were not known for precision marksmanship! Hey, better late that never. Really though, hats off to their current marksmanship training. One shot, One Kill!! But really, they learned everything they know about precision shooting from the United States Army; Hooah!
What a great system! This really works, my advice is order at least two, cuz once you show your buddies at the range how much you have improved, they will want one to.
I’m nearsighted so seeing the front sight is easy without my glasses on but much harder with them on, which will be most of the time, what should I do to improve this?
This works! And I'm cross eye dominant. I'm now able to shoot with both eyes open and immediately pick up the front sight after years, rather decades, rather half a century of closing my dominant eye (left). Pretty easy to retrain the brain.
There are a lot of great, legitimate vision improvement techniques. Awesome to see a SEAL hitting on this topic. Here’s a bit of advice; Monofocal (one eye) exercises improve acuity and focal/accommodative velocity better than bifocal excercises, but; Bifocal exercises improve convergence/divergence speed and eliminate double vision and ghosting. Fine focus can be improved with proper use of positive lenses and the acceleration/velocity of accommodation can be improved with +/- flippers. I need to finish the video though.. :)
How does presbyopia work with the one eye exercises? When I was a kid I could shift one eye focus from front sight to target to front sight to rear sight and back to front sight. With out glasses my eye focuses on the back sight. The front sight is fuzzy and the target truly fuzzy. With my progressive lenses I have to shift my head to do that.
@@dankd5det256 Actually, that doesn’t sound like presbyopia. Presbyopia is an age related vision disorder that is caused by the lens becoming less elastic. It would result in the opposite symptoms you describe. The rear sight would be blurry and more distant focal targets would be clearer. What you are describing is myopia. To be sure though.. you mentioned progressive lenses. Can you read/see text clearly without glasses? If so then it sounds like you don’t have presbyopia. Myopia begins when the ciliary muscle becomes strained from too much nearpoint/closeup focusing. The muscle eventually fails to fully relax and therefore the lens continues to project the focal point behind the retina and objects in the distance remain unfocused (perfect 20/20 vision is achieved when the ciliary muscle is relaxed. This muscle is activated when the eyes are focusing on close objects, especially when reading. When traditional negative diopter glasses are used to pull the focal plane forward, the eyes becomes stuck in the contracted state because they no longer need to relax for perfect distant vision, the glasses are doing it for them. With continued nearpoint stress they eyeballs responds to this feedback by “elongating” in order to pull the retina back towards the retreating focal plane. Then stronger glasses are prescribed and the situation just repeats and worsens. The feedback systems involved in these processes are complex but the research is conclusive that it’s a two way street. The genetic mechanisms allow for the eyeball to both lengthen or shorten under appropriate stimulus. So myopia can be reversed if appropriate adjustments are made and conscious attention is directed to visual input. A key to the whole system is that the eyes can only learn to overcome a small degree of blur. Only about a 1/4 diopter at a time. If blur is too strong, they don’t even try. This is achieved by “under-correction” and it means that you would use glasses that don’t give you 20/20 vision but something more like 20/40. With attention, some time and a few specific techniques that help the eyes release the ciliary tension, the visual system can bring 20/40 back to 20/20 with the same prescription/diopter. Then the diopter or strength of the lenses are reduced again by a 1/4 diopter and the process is repeated. This can be done until one is close to 20/20 without glasses. Sorry if this sounds abstract, it’s difficult to summarize in a YT comment.
Hey look up Brock String or ask an optometrist who does vision training. Problem is as we get over 40 (for most) our near point of focus (accommodation) and eye triangulation ( convergence) fails us. W/o the aid of a nearpoint correction. Presbyopia baby!!!!

I must say it’s very good advice and I find this video very interesting, I was curious and I just had to try this technique, while focusing on the front sight works but rear sight becomes like a double picture , its really hard to place a front sight and shoot accurately with both eyes open, at least so far.
Can see how this would benefit new shooters, certainly. Though, a more advanced way for accurate, fast shooting all converges around grip and point shooting. I train just as much with with my sights removed as I do with them on
So, maybe I’m weird and have some OCD’s where I play with my eye focus lining up objects, closing one eye then the other to both eyes and back again… I say this because I built the focus string and was immediately able to focus from bead to bead without delay at any distance out to about the 10 feet of length. I then put on a larger bead and let it slide down and could maintain a perfect “x”. I guess sometimes it pays to be weird. Hahaha. Or maybe I just picked it up naturally after nearly 40 years of shooting and having been an archer in my younger years. I will definitely have my wife do this as she has only been shooting a few years and still struggles with sight pickup
I'm happy that you where able to see what so many fathers end up missing, your son needed to know his daddy, and your a good man to get out when you did. Folks think being in is all exciting, and just one big adrenaline rush, but have they ever been taking kids to school, on a Monday, with a geography homework volcano due that day, all while dodging minivans, and crossing guards, and then right before you hit the drop zone the cargo says, dad, I think I peed in my pants, and your already late for a meeting at work, now that is real adrenaline.
no mention of left eye dominant/right handed [from old injury I think] type shooters...........and using both eyes open while doing your trick.....maybe switch eyes , then use both eyes?
I had this done by my ophthalmologist and she told me to make sure that the string is level and don’t have the string below or above my head. Also, the string has to be taut with zero slack. I asked or if I can secure the one side of the string to a cabinet handle and she said as long as I am looking directly forward with it and no angle looking down or up. Is this different for front-sight training as the video is showing looking down at an angle. Thank you!

This is interesting. I know that we have a dominate eye and I have always used my dominate eye to look down the sights. This seems to be teaching your non-dominate eye to catch up with your dominate eye. Am I wrong about that? And if that is what this does, how does it help while shooting when you close one eye while shooting? I am a "why" guy so please don't take this as me questioning the technique.
Chris Sajnog , it's been going VERY WELL. I can't wait to try it on the range...I always pass my quails, but never had the BEST scores. Do you have any training videos on night quals/shooting? Anything to consider for night shooting? I have the trijicon sights and tac-light.
Not sure if this would help me or not. I was involved in a crush accident 9 years ago so I have a blind spot in my non dominate eye, one of the reasons I was forced to retire from the military.
I have a silly question, maybe someone can help me. Do you focus more on the sight? Or the target? Or do they both focus together? I'm a fairly new shooter, and want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.
Chris as you progressed with your pistol and rifle shooting did you find yourself no longer needing 100% focus on your front sight? I now use like 1/2 or 1/4 focus on my front sight and the rest went to the bad guy especially when moving and when hes moving

If I made one. would it be better to use a black cord and beads the color of my front sight to make the focus transition to my weapon more natural? I m a ' one eye jack'. Lost my right eye in an accident. I m right handed n use my left eye...... Thus alway monocular vision with no depth perception. Is there a modified version to this 'String / Bead' exercise?
Sorry to hear that Jack. 😉 The main use for this string is training binocular vision. You can use it in the same way and it will help, but with one eye you can just focus on anything small and change the distance. Eg: Hold a business card at arm's length and move it back and forth keeping one letter on the card in perfect focus. Then, start practicing shifting focus from the card to a distant object.
Chris Sajnog I can tell that you really want to make a difference and aren't just a snake oil salesman because I've seen you tell at least half a dozen to a dozen people that this product probably won't help them as much as something else will or that it's just not necessary for them... Focusing is something that I don't believe that I've got an issue with when shooting a handgun. My problem is squeezing the trigger the correct way and figuring out the best way for me personally to grip the gun. I'm still fairly new to pistol shooting but Ive shot rifles and shotguns my entire life and the differences between the two are night and day which is something I really underestimated before I bought my handgun. I’m a one eye jack from birth. Right hand left eye as well with very poor depth perception. One thing that helped me although it does feel somewhat unnatural was switching to my left hand while shooting. That coupled with what Chris is say has really helped improve my skills
Im still thinking about the front sight, I just started wearing bi-focal glasses and im unsure which lens to look through ? and haven't done any shooting since wearing glasses,,,hmmm
Hi Chris. Bought your string months ago and have yet to use it. That will change today! Kind of technical question. If I recall, as we age, the elasticity of our eyeballs diminishes. Am 63 and wear bifocals. W/O glasses, I can focus perfectly on front sight. With glasses, not so much. With string practice, will this actually train the eyeball to re-focus like that of a 25-year-old? Thanks.
I'm fairly new to shooting and am having a pretty horrible time with focusing. If I focus on the front sights, then my target doubles and vice versa. I also wear bifocals. Will these help me?
I'm having the same problem. If I focus on the front sight, I see two blurry targets and can't hit anything. I literally wouldn't be able to hit the broad side of a buffalo like that. If I focus my eye on the target and ignore the sights my non-dominant left eye is seeing (closing it for a short moment helps clear it up) aiming at the target is pretty easy. I can't imagine why anyone would want to do it differently?
I don't understand how this helps. I can focus the front sight fine. If I do though, the target disappears, and I just see the side of the gun unless I close an eye.

This may be silly but before aiming i just look at the target. Then I focus on the front site. When I do this, the target seems to "MOVE" and looks a bit blurry. Is this when I should realign my aim? I have never shot a handgun but I am doing the research first for safety. So I dont know if my shot will be off or when it will be on the mark. When I do the test on your other video (where the circles seem to move) I can make the circles stop. I can also make the other purple spots disappear. So I feel like im getting it but still cant figure out how to adjust for the "shifting". I guess I will only know by actually shooting???
You don't want to shift your focus while shooting. That movement you mention is the very reason for this. Make sure you can do it dry fire before trying it live.
Looks llike people with equal vision it would help. I don't have equal vision, I am farsighted in my week eye and nearsighted in my eye I read with. And my ability to shoot is great. Front sight focus is not the same it allows have the target sensed by one eye and sighted by the other.
Very few people have equal vision. This will help anyone who's not blind. And if your ability to shoot is great, and you can't get any better, that's awesome!
Hello Chris. I am left eye dominant shooter,right hand.how can i change my left scope eye to right?I have problem with rifles and i cant use my left hand.
How does cross-eye dominant fit into this ??? I like this little teaching technique but what do you tell students that are left eye dominant, will they have more trouble with this?
Switch hands. I'm right eye dominant southpaw. Shooting right handed was very unnatural at first, but I adjusted. And the great thing is you don't have to burn much powder. You can practice a great deal with an unloaded weapon.
so how does focusing on front site help shooting when if my front sight is in focus the target is fuzzy. Also how does this line up the sight with the 2 targets you see when you focus on front site?
By training your eyes and cognition to rapidly switch focus from target to front site. Identify threat (target focus), eliminate threat (front site focus). The faster you can transition your focus, the faster you can hit the target, transition between targets, etc. The late Todd Green, RIP, put it best, to hit your target you need to see what you need to see. This just helps you see what you need to see faster. It will also pay dividends on picking up your front site much faster during the draw, which is probably the limiting factor for most shooters after they reach a certain skill level.
