One quick note... On some GMT watches, like the Seiko SUN055 here. The hour 12 hand, not the GMT hand is manipulated independently. In which case the best way to use it is to adjust it so that it's in line with the min and GMT hand. Then set it to adjust your local time. So then your GMT hand will be telling your home time. Then while traveling you can quick adjust it so that the 12-hour hand is your local. Although like many things in life, there is more than one way to do us a GMT watch. So use whatever suits your needs the best.

Your explanation of what a GMT watch is good. The design and development of the original "GMT" watches has it's roots in aviation and there's a very legitimate reason why and it's weather ! (I think most of us here are probably familiar with the history of the Glycine Airman and Pan Am specified "Pepsi" GMT Rolex.) All official weather reports and forecasts are issued in reference to UTC which stands for "Universal Time Coordinated" (sometimes referred to as "Coordinated Universal Time") and the agreement is global. The acronym UTC replaced the acronym GMT which stood for "Greenwich Mean Time" and was based on the time at the British Royal Observatory located at Greenwich England. GMT time has it's roots in the previous world dominance of the British Royal Navy and it's importance is related to navigation. It was the British that developed the system of longitude and latitiude for the purpose of navigation and the reference datum to this day remains centered on the Royal Observatory located at Greenwich England (London). Time measurement is an integral part of accurate navigation, however there's an even more important issue related to time and the operation of an aircraft and it's the weather. Because weather reports and forecasts are issued in UTC/GMT there was and is a very legitimate need to have a ready reference available in UTC/GMT. A jet has the ability to rapidly change time zones multiple times a day and the practical problem to a pilot who has a need to correct for UTC/GMT can become rather daunting especially when sleep deprived and or performing other tasks. Also keep in mind that a typical schedule has a pilot doing this many times a month. Personally, since I have the professional need, I ALWAYS leave my "GMT" hand set to the proper datum (UTC/GMT) and it's never changed, not even when vacationing. I also never change my hour hands (except for daylight savings time) leaving them set to my home-based time and mentally correct for my current location. The correction becomes second nature but the bezel on a GMT watch is what is intended to be used to correct for your "temporary" location. Flight crews rarely reset their watches, especially pilots, because of the risk of inducing error. Far less risky to adjust a bezel vs the GMT and or hour hands ! BTW, I have that same Komanderskie and as you pointed out, the "GMT" is read off the bezel but I would never seriously rely on that watch because the bezel is subject to casual, unintended movement. It's a great little watch that was purchased on a whim as a novelty, mainly because I admire the simplicity and ingenuity of Russian Vostok designs. Good job with your explanation and I hope I've offered you some perspective on the history and primary reason why GMT watches were developed. As you know, the watches are quite effective for travelers who don't have a particular concern as to UTC/GMT and it's up to the individual as to how they utylize the watch.

Thanks. Was working on it tonight, but it's going to be a long one. So a bit more editing to go. I've heard some great things about the Steinhart. Most of the other GMTs seem to be based on divers. So thats one place the Airman is different. Which makes it also thinner then most at 11mm. Yet it still has 200m WR. The other major difference is that this seems to be more military and tool looking. While many of the others have much more flash.

I look forward to the Airman Review. I actually have an Airman, but mine is an Airman 42. The dial can be confusing beacause it has a 24 hour track and no 12 hour track, so you have to think.

@surfitli
@surfitli 5 лет назад
Salvatore Uva The Long Orange Hand on this model Airman, in this case it’s a Base 22, makes 1 rotation a day. The long white hand is the minute hand and makes 1 rotation every hour. This watch has a 24 hour dial so it’s a little confusing when first looking at it. The even numbers would be 1-12 on a 12- hour dial. I have a different model Airman, the Airman 42.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 лет назад
Yup. There is a bit of a learning curve to using it. The normal hour does 2 rotations a day. While the orange stick is one. But as Surfitli said it gets confusing as the dial is set up for a 24 hour scale. There are a few ticks to it. I think the newer 42 might be slightly easier to use. Dial looks a little cleaner, so maybe less to confuse.

You could also set the GMT/bezel to show the actual solar time and use it as a compass :) It would make a lot of sense to have midnight à 6 'oclock and noon at 12 to better match the day/night.

Maybe, “Traditional GMT” could be the term for watches with a fourth central hand making one rotation in 24 hours reading on perimeter markings. This would include your “True” and “Original” groups, but would exclude the Citizen Promaster Nighthawk BJ700x models with their semi-circular 24 hour scale and central hand, the Timex Flyback Chronograph with its flyback 24 hour sub-dial and other watches with dedicated GMT/UTC sub-dials like Citizen Skyhawks and Navihawks. The many different implementations of watch complications makes watch collecting so interesting for me. I have four “Traditional GMT” watches, each with a very different look and feel: Citizen Promaster GMT BJ7080-53E, Orient Star “Seeker” GMT, Seiko Kinetic GMT SUN037 and Timex 3GMT T2P424. I set the GMT hands to actual GMT/UTC and work with that and the rotating bezels. I like that you flashed on the screen the “Casio Royale”. I am making a little sub-collection of the Casio AExxxx World Time watches.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 лет назад
That could be a good term. Although I was wondering if the Promaster Nighthawk would be considered a GMT or not. It's still on my list to get some day, so I'm not 100% sure how it operates. It looks like it has a 24 hour hand, just a double sided one. How do you like your Timex GMT? I've thought about getting one as well.
@carllange3950
@carllange3950 5 лет назад
Relative Time I had thought about getting a Nighthawk, but ended up getting a Citizen World Chronograph & Skyhawk instead. The Promaster Nighthawk uses the same B877 movement as my Promaster GMT, so it is a true GMT hand not just a 24 hour dial. The 12 hour hand & the date are advanced at the first click position of the crown. The 2nd click position hacks the movement and changes the time. My Seiko does not have a quick set date, which I actually prefer since the 12 hour hand can be advanced or reversed. My Orient Star and Timex approach the GMT function in the opposite manner from the Citizen and Sieko. Setting the time (2 clicks out) sets the time and the GMT hand is set (advanced) afterwards. The Timex uses a pusher for 1/2 hour GMT hand increments and uses a 72 click uni-directional bezel, which translates into 1/3 hour clicks. A 60 click bezel would not have been correct. Maybe they thought a 48 click bezel would have felt too coarse. I did not get the Timex Allied 3GMT (TW2R43500VQ) because I preferred the T2P424 look. I am glad I bought the Timex. I now have two watches from their Intelligent Quartz collection.

Thank you so much for your kind assistance.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 3 года назад
No problem. So if I'm reading this right. I think you would first set your watch to your local time. So that the hour hand lines up to UK time. Then adjust the GMT hand back 5 hours so that it's in Toronto. After that you need to adjust the bezel, but you adjust it in relation to the GMT hand. So if its 14:05 in Tornoto, but 04:05 in Melbourne, that's a +14 hour difference. In which case you need to rotate the bezel so 14 is on the top.

It's nice to see a watch channel that isn't Rolex, Seiko and micro brand obsessed.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 лет назад
I think one of the reasons some channels focus on Rolex and Seiko is because it does bring in viewers. Those seem to be the two keywords that RU-vid will then use to recommend your video to new viewers. So they have an incentive to keep making them. What more bugs me is when it always seems to be a top 5 Seiko video. Yet they never have real footage of those watches. Just stock photos they got off the internet. You can only do that so many times before it starts to feel repetitive.
@syndicatedsatellite7288
@syndicatedsatellite7288 5 лет назад
@@RelativeTime Those Rolex channels get quite creative about what to talk about next on Rolex watches. They worry about Rolex watches like it is their lifeline, yet I doubt the Rolex company would even give them the right time of day... It is easy for a watch channel to show stock pictures and say this watch is a thousand dollars, that watch is thirty five hundred dollars, but they don't even have a ten dollar watch to show in their real video time..
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 лет назад
Very true. The thing that bugs me is when those kinds of channels talk about "entry level" watches. Yet nothing is less than a grand. Even Watchuseek has an "article" up about budget dress watches. www.watchuseek.com/best-dress-watches-on-a-budget/ The first 3 are budget options (although I'm not sure I'd saw a swatch is a dress watch). Yet the last 4 are $900-$1700. Sometimes I think whoever is creating these kinds of things has lost touch with reality.

This is true, but depending on the GMT watch you can still get it to work. Some GMTs can freely rotate around the dial instead of hour increments, although ironically they are some of the cheaper ones. One I remember is the Ronda quartz GMT movement. @@rajdeepkumar99 Well there are a few different ways to do it, and I show a few in this video. Basically, you need to know the number of hours changes between where you live and where you are traveling. Then you just move the bezel forward or backward that number of hours. Then instead of reading the time as you normally would you reference the bezel rather than the dial. It just acts as a shortcut when traveling. If you don't know the time change between destinations you can either google it, or look for another type of watch that has a world time function. There are a lot more world time watches than gmt, and usually they already know what time zone a city is in. If it was, your small hour hand would have been on the 13 marker (in this case where you would roughly be around the 7 on a regular watchl!) Remember 24hrs! 13 = 1pm. Your 1 hand is on 2 which is 2am at night. So in other words: for your still shot with the three times, your local time was off by 10hrs! Remember am vs pm vs 24hrs! Anything after midnight is 00:00 ! So unless you shot this in the middle of the night, your way off 😁. Local time is 02:04 (or 2:04am), Utah is 12:04PM and Vegas indeed 11:04am. Guess you'll need to redo the whole video 😲 Nah, you get a hall pass on that one: the Airman would not be my first choice for a GMT with that 24hr dial where it actually does just 1 rotation a day!

Henk Van de Goor The main (regular) hand is on a 12 hour scale, rotating once every 12 hours. This is mentioned at around 5:07 in the video. Ignore the numbers and look at the larger dial markers for the main hour hand. Shane has it right.

Now I'm really confused... LOL 😀 Well on the GMT version of the airman the regular hour hand is still on a 12 hour scale, even though the dial is 24. Which is where some of the confusion comes in play. On the "Purist" version of the Ariman, you don't have the GMT hand, and the hour hand runs at 24 hour. So I shot this right after lunch, and it was accurate to when I recorded it. So local time or the normal hour is at the 1:00 position, which happens to be the 2 on the 24 hour dial. Otherwise, the GMT hand is on a 24 hour scale, and should be good. I think... The "purist" version makes more sense from a design perspective. But I found out that it uses the exact same movement. They just use a GMT hand that looks like the regular hour hand. Then leave off the 12 hour hand.

Henk Van de Goor You are correct about the minutes. The time is 1:04.

@@P_Ezi [EDIT] Thanks for clarifying.. Ignore below.. [/EDIT] uh, the 24hr version of the Glycine airman does 1 rotation (small hands) every 24 hours... So I think not?

@@RelativeTime 24hrs is 24hrs. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but this version rotates the small hands only once rotate every 24 hrs, right? so like what would be 12hrs on a regular watch right? So then regardless your small hand should be on 24hrs as well...? Indeed confusing? If the small hand rotates in a regular 12hrs style, it is confusing as heck! Cause the scale does 2hrs in 1 regular hour? I mean how the hell you read it then? Small hand on 24hr scale on 2 is then actually 1? Makes no sense to me?
