I show you how to use an impact driver and hammer to remove a difficult screw without damage. No batteries required. Sometimes when you have a tough, stuck, frozen bolt or screw, this tool will save the day.
Here is a link to an impact driver like the one I use but made by another company.

I bought the same Craftsman impact driver working on my Wheel Horse transmission.. what a fantastic tool. Bought it when Sears was still in business. It's a heavy tool, wish i had a case like that, keep it in the old plastic it came in, but man what a useful tool to break screws and bolts free.

Worked in large maintenance shops as an electrician for 50 years and purchased my Craftsman impact tool about 40 years ago think for only around $10. Came with a few screwdriver bits but most of the time used it to remove frozen bolts. Nice vid.

I have one similar to that one, bought it when I needed to remove the butterfly valve on my Mazda Protege in I think 2019 to clean it, but the screw I had an issue to remove was in a poor spot and was not easily gotten to, but I did eventually get it removed. Eric O of South Main Auto used to use one to remove the often rusted screws that held on the brake rotors on cars and that's how I heard of them at first. He lives in Avoca NY so rust is an issue up that way.

Get a set of Vessel impact bits for JIS fasteners-

Yep. Also the JIS japanese industrial standard cross point screw drivers.

The main risk on trying to use a screw driver on a stuck fastener is you can apply enough torque to twist off the head of the screw. So that impact driver is a must.

It's important to match the dimensions of the driver bit to the slot in the screw. Try Chapman hollow ground and hardened bit sets or similar for best results.

Neat, mine has a selection that are as you describe and have served me well.

Too funny. I just suggested this to a person on a group website for industrial machines.

A coworker had an old motorcycle that did a lot of shake rattle & roll driving down back dirt roads. He used his impact wrench to tighten the hell out of every bolt & screw to prevent them from coming loose from all the vibration.

shake and brake......for really rusty ones......or sometimes I just put that socket portion on my electric impact gun.

I got an impact driver when I was an apprentice Industrial Electrician 40 years ago. I haven't used it once. I have always just used a 1/4" socket driver with the appropriate socket. The handle adds enough torque.

Well, if you do ever get into a situation that you need it, it will still work. That can't be said for a battery operated tool. 😺

Great job at explaining how to use an impact driver. Always start with the correct screwdriver number, his choice of an 8 in 1 was way too small a blade and handle for good leverage. Next, I would have applied a little LPS penetrating oil on a stubborn fastener. I would encourage people to by a brushless cordless driver. They're an automatic drive that delivers micro hammering as it turns like a small jack hammer.

A big step above the impact driver is the "Shake N Break".

do you ever use penetrating oil on stuck fasteners?

The KEY to impact drivers,.. Is simply NOT, using the F'd Up Bits someone else leaves behind. From my experience anyway ☺️ ... be careful who has access to your tools ✌️

I never know if by turning the impact driver in the direction that you want the fastener to turn, you are helping by pretensioning it or hindering by using up the potential turning.
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer Год назад
pretensioning is the right way. This orients the mechanism in the best position for full transfer of the hammer's force into the fastener.

couldnt you just hammer on the end of the initial screw driver in the first place? wouldnt that have the same affect?
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 2 года назад
Not even close. The impact driver has a mechanism within it that converts the longitudinal force of the hammer into a twist direction force. Note the movement in the tool as I have shown.

This tool produces a short impulse of high torque, that you cannot mimic by turning a screwdriver with your hand.
