Ran into this on a float this past Sunday. We paddled into a 16 to 25 mph headwind and with my skeg down there were times that I paddled almost 20 strokes on the same side of my kayak and stayed completely straight. After 8-9 miles I was exhausted luckily the wind died down the last 2 miles or so and we enjoyed the river and scenery of southern Pennsyvania.

I have been paddling a lot of Romany (one of the original seykayaks). Unlike the one you are paddling (and most others), it is sidewind robust - at least up to 10 m/s (22 mph) which I have done in side wind over 20 km trips. What you explain is well illustrated and useful for most kayaks - well done.

One more thing about inflatables is that usually there are only 2 options: to have a skeg installed or not. It's not possible to have it partially retracted (not yet at least 😉).

Man... I would love to. I'm actually not too far away right now. I'm in Ireland filming for 2 weeks. :). Just finished a week in Northern Ireland, and now I'm on the West coast. Having a blast!

That's rad - a quick google search pulled up a bunch of articles about their design being great for rolling. I'll do some research and see about trying one out this winter. Is there anything you specifically like or don't like about using a Greenland paddle?

@@lukelikeslakesthey are a variety item, ok in mild condition s and gentle on wrists and shoulders but in bad condition s you will need the euro paddle . There are many good reasons why plenty everyone uses a euro paddle

@@lukelikeslakes Greenland paddles are good for flat water that is not shallow. They also tend to get you wet, which is less desirable in cold conditions or without a sprayskirt. In shallow water, the long skinny blade will not give you adequate force. They are less affected by a headwind. On many of my multi-day kayak camping trips, I will bring a euro-style paddle and a Greenland style paddle to give my hands some variety, since it's a different style of grip.

Is it me, or is that Greenland paddle too short?...are you supposed to hold it on the shoulder or start of blade? Seems uncomfortable.

Greenland paddles are shorter than euro paddles. It's hard to tell the length, though because the video is shot in wide angle. Generally with the Greenland paddle, your pointer fingers and thumbs are on the shaft and the rest of the fingers are on the blade. It's comfortable. On long kayak camping trips, having both a euro paddle and a Greenland paddle gives my hands some variety.
