@Sffker
@Sffker Год назад
and carrying this or other heavy materials up a ladder on your back or using a rope is any less of a safety risk? not really. I’ve had to use a rope to hoist stuff up roof ladder hatches, manually pulling, even what I was pulling was light, but bulky. You gonna see me go up a straight vertical ladder with a box of 26x26x4 filters? Uh, no. and I’m not carrying 1 up at a time either when I need 2 boxes. But we didn’t have a hoist on the roof. Still much safer than say a residential roof that doesn’t have a curb for you to lean against/over and pull stuff up with at least less risk of falling off.
@philbert006
@philbert006 Год назад
@@Sffkersomething silly like that, and 1700 bucks? I call that failure to properly price the job. 😂 It's not that killing much to rent a boom lift or something similar. Shit, even if you have to hire the local crane service, probably with a two hour minimum, wouldn't cost half that much, and anyways all that should be in the estimate. Looks like he needs to upgrade his customer base. And the only thing worse than dragging up that box of 26×26×4 filters is dragging up your toolbag, a vacuum pump, and a set of torches, then have to lug that shit a mile and a half across a roof and back. I found zip ties and a dolly are pretty effective. You can stack so your stuff on it, secure everything with the ties, and let the tires ride the wall on the way up for stability.
@echohunter4199
@echohunter4199 Год назад
You’re on the right track here. Having the gear box at the top is the best option in your design. With utmost respect, I propose you to add two 4-5 foot,long aluminum arms connected to your lift assemble in a way so they can pivot/swing out and set on the roof. I’d go with something about 2 inch square extruded aluminum tubing with swiveling feet pads like the ladder has. This will provide some additional safety and if needed, you can screw down the feet to prevent minor load oscillation. Another option instead of two stabilizing legs is to use just one but make it ‘L’ shaped so the roof feet pads are on the bottom of the ‘L’ shape. The goal is to create something that can provide something that will keep the operator away from the roof edge which would make a lot of business owners nervous for liability reasons. Even making a bracket that can hold a cordless drill on your device so the operator can use either a wired hand control or a simple metal lever mounted on the stabilizing arm(s) would work. Electric motors are pretty cheap as are gear assemblies that drills use so it might be possible to just build a complete powered unit that uses common drill batteries. If you made the stabilizing braces beefier to hold more weight, you could lift materials for roof repairs or anything in between.

While its certainly true that theres nothing in the universe that an idiot cant screw up, I find myself doubting that this is a particularly dangerous piece of gear. This probably had a worm gear in it that cant be driven by the load. Btw, being someone that repairs industrial electronics and gets a lot of the VFDs that run crane motors, I hate to inform you that your life often heavily depends on some pretty chinchy little relays that close at detection of 0 speed to engage brakes to prevent the load from freewheeling, and these are controlled by electronics that I frequently replace because they failed.

I worked one hour for a man who was a roofer , my father hired this rather older man to put a roof on their home . He went with his cheaper price , why that cheaper price was soon realized as he was a one man crew . The hardest working man I ever met . I found myself as a hired hand once it began and at 16 years old I had put maybe 10 loads of shingles up on the roof . I had to quit and rethink the venture , this was not only more than hard labor it was dangerous hard labor , I showed my respect and made sure that man had all he needed from the ground . He gave my a handshake for trying it out , just continue the day . Respect

Now picture doing that at 16 but its a 50 square roof so thats 150 bundles of shingles and your 1 of the 2 "younger/ground" guys and over 3 days youve carried 75 bundles up a 2 story roof on a flimsy ass extension ladder that wobbles even worse the more tired your legs get 😂 i had that ladder bowing in and out 2 feet by the 3rd day and never wanted to walk again. Im now 32 and thankful for whoever created metal roofs.

i used to change put like five of those a year for leslie pools. standard exhaust fan from grainger i think. u can carry them up a ladder with one hand no problem, they cant wheigh more than 30lbs. johnstone was selling those hoists for a while and they wheigh like 45 to 75lbs. the one that mounts to the bilco style ladder doors seemed safer. we thought about getting them for big ass blower motors heat exchanegrs or smaller condensing units but just ended up being cheaper to have two guys on a job or rent a crane
