I bought a cheap lino cutter and experimented with it on raw polymer clay. This tutorial demonstrates some of the possible effects, although there remains a lot more to lean, I'm sure. ( / editor )
As I always say, "Oh, the possibilities!" My favorite is that last one you made with the curled tops. I HAVE a linoleum cutter, but for some reason only thought to use it on baked clay. Huh.
Just before this tool arrived, I happened to see a video (long, about an hour or more) on making rubber stamps by carving them, and they used this tool. It was really interesting, because it was a group of people and they all had different methods, but they also showed the effects of the different blades and when to use them, plus the kinds of rubber to get if you wanted to make your own stamps. I've also seen a few videos where others used a similar tool on clay, and the effect was gorgeous. But mine has arrived now, so i have to go play.
I'm late to the party, but I ordered that book after watching the video yesterday. It arrived today. Fantastic book! I've been claying for a while, but found so many good tips and new ideas. Can't wait to try out some of the fabulous designs!
I love this idea. I have done linocutting and loved it. This is really a creative way to go wild. You did a great job of showing some ideas. Especially liked the idea of putting the "divots" back on the clay. 💌 Happy Valentine's Day
They look so cool, and I say a lady use a set of lino cutters on a special lino. block for making stamps the result was lovely too, thank you, hugs🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🐝👍🌹🌺🌹🌺🌹🌺🌹🐞
I don't know if you'll get this since it's now 2021 !! But I will definitely be buying a lino cutter. I thought the hearts got better as you went along, and my favourite was the last one.
These are great . I now have to go through the stash of stuff I have had for years to find mine.I remember it was in a brown paper bag but where ? !!!!!
months ago I got some of those lino cutters in a kit. Did the block and didn't really care for it so I'm thrilled to see another use for the cutter!!! yeah!
these are gorgeous! i love the last one yoyu made best and am off to my local $2shop to get a small set of carving tools they have as im sure some of the blades are the same. thank you so much for the share
I got mine from Amazon and I see they are on Amazon in the USA too (EssDee 5 Lino Cutters). This isn't an affiliate post, so not sure about posting links. I don't want to break any rules. ;)
I loved that last one, reminds me of under the sea. I used a linoleum cutter in High School art classes when we were doing printing and we made our own printing blocks. I never would have thought to use them on clay. BUT, that does answer a thought I had about doing a custom texture stamp. cut it out, make a rubber cast, them you can use it to do custom peels. ;)
I don't know if you'll see this comment. This was beautiful to watch. Simple yet different. Straightaway I saw a mix of blues and greens, with the divets being seaweed, and sea creatures added to the front for earrings, pendants, focal beads on cuff bracelets, just so many ideas. Thankyou for setting my imagination alight.
Thank you! It's pretty magical and the tool is inexpensive (for once lol). I hope you have lots of creative fun with this. I was born on an island, so I really love anything to do with the sea. ❤️
I have a different bead book by Carol Blackburn; I saw pics of this technique in there but it didn't seem all that striking. Now that I've seen you do it, I would definitely try that technique. Terrific video, as always. I really look forward to yours! ;-)
thank you for the inspiration! I too own some of these blades that are included in an Exact-o knife set. I have not used them with polymer clay. YEAH, I will admit it never occurred to me. As always I enjoyed the video. I'm learning much from you and have so much fun watching😄
Very beautiful effects,I wonder could I get a lino cutter with its attachments here in west cork Ireland,,and the ones that they might have are just ordinary li o cutters,so I do hope I can get them here,,I would love to have seen what the others attachments do, what other designs they do,,you could I suppose used red blue green yellow white and black in layers ,I wonder what the result would be,,very cool I suppose, take care, have a great week,🌹🌺🌹🌺🐝🌹🌺🌹🌺🌹🐞
I tried this a few times with my wood carving tools and it didn't work very well.. I never thought of the lino cutter. Now I can sell my old carving tools. Thanks, Val. :)
What a fab idea! I would never have thought about using a Lino cutter, i love the effects produced by it, the heart on the far left at the end of the video also looks like a flame effect, pretty cool, i shall be adding a Lino cutter to the shopping list. Thanks as always for your creative, inspiring ideas, I really enjoy watching your videos. Barbara 😊
Cali Black sent me and so glad she did! I've really been enjoying your videos - cracking out on previous ones admittedly.. Thank you for all the humor and good info!
I just found your channel, so far I love it! I got that book from eBay, super cheap! I bought the linoleum cutter around the same time for stamp making! My favorite thing to use cutter on is making large deep divots on Makume Gane! Then you fill the divot holes with other colors or just replace them upside down! It creates amazing effects! It also creates some wicked patterns for Mica Shift technique! Use 2-3 different blades on one mica shift sheet, it rocks! Have fun playing with your new cutter tool!!! Love your videos!!
Fantastic video and I have got one of these tools and seeing this has inspired me to make a veneer for either a small trinket box or the base of a cover for a notebook, thank you
are the other blades that come with it good to use on poly clay as well? or are they all sort of the same? thanks for sharing this tool! i never would have thought to use it, and now have some great ideas!!
Yeah, I saw somebody suggesting that. I've tried some of my other blades today and since I got the whole lot for £5 I think they are worth it - but working with what you already have is also good. :D xx
Thank you for this video. I love the examples with the additional layers. I had seen videos of someone doing this with pottery and thought it might work with the clay. You’ve just proved me right. Now I can play.
I have used this tool to make texture sheets, but never thought of using the pieces I scrape off, or using multiple layers. You have made me realise there is so much more potential to this little tool. Thank you for sharing.
I bought it originally to make rubber stamps, but found it really hard. Should have persevered but didn't :) I carve designs and textures out of clay now and bake it to make kind of a reverse stamp mould that I can press my raw clay into. Now I will have to try your method. I love the results on your pendants.xx
I love these! I can't wait to see what else you come up with using your lino cutter. I had forgotten that I got one of these lino cutters for Christmas last year. I had some ideas for using it a few weeks ago but this opens up a whole new world of ideas.
The third one you did, the one that resembles wood grain really looks fantastic. It seems like it might be a helpful tool for fairy doors and logs too.
