Thank you for a great video! I just scored one of these at a thrift store, never been used, never even been opened. My Borner was getting dull so giving Oxo another try (my older Oxo was very frustrating and dangerous when changing blades). I love having a mandolin again 😊

Never use a guider that doesn't have an inside compartment for your hand. When you position the mandoline with the side facing you, your wrist isn't in the path of the blade. A side-to-side movement means you don't have to put on the brakes like you would with a forward-back or diagonal movement. Bonus in that you get to see where the slices land.

Really great tutorial. I have been thinking about getting one, but have too many traumas from overzealous use back in the day. It's actually amazing how varied in quality these are at retail.

Thanks for checking it out and commenting. And I totally agree on the quality. Just like a knife, I think it’s better to get the best you can afford. A mandoline can open up some great recipes or add to your repertoire. Cheers!

This is like anything else, a little practice and you'll get a rhythm down. Just got one as a gift today, will definitely use it. Saw another video and the girl said to use the thing going up and down rather than sideways. Makes sense to me, you might want to try it that way, bet it's easier.

Yes, gravity could indeed help, as long as the device is secure. Watch those fingers and enjoy your new kitchen tool!

@@IWantToCook Yup, that thing is definitely going to have to be secure and I do think the up and down motion will be easier to establish a rhythm with too. Everything is straighter about that than trying to go side to side. Ultimately, whatever you're comfortable with and works best for you is the ticket. Thanks for the video, was helpful

Not all examples on the Market are good. If you have friends with them try them out. It's not a Sin to have more than one type... I use my Oxo Good Grips Handheld the most. (I'm not paid). And Have an excellent PL8

Thanks for the informative video. I wish you had mentioned the brand of mandolin that you are using . It looks sturdy and has a stand which I think would be better than having to hold it.

@@IWantToCook thanks for the information. Unfortunately this model is $99-99 at Amazon in Canada plus $30 shipping! I’m guessing that you must be an American!

Yes, California specifically. That’s a shame it’s so pricey for our neighbors up north.

Hi. What tool/machine is going to be best to get very fine onion? Thanks!
@IWantToCook
@IWantToCook Год назад
For very fine onion slices, I would use a mandoline like this. For finely cut pieces, I recommend a food processor or a very sharp knife. For the latter, here’s a video on made to do it that way: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r9zXaYyoo1E.html

@@IWantToCook thanks! Do you have a video of using a food processor to dice the onions properly?
@IWantToCook
@IWantToCook Год назад
@@adamthewoodworker2571 I do not, but for that just cut onions into chunks, load them into the processor, and press the button until it chops to the consistency that you desire.

Oh dear! I hope he heals quickly and your sanity is restored. Please take care of yourselves - and maybe buy a mandoline so this doesn’t happen again. My best to you.

He totally ignores how fast they can take a piece of your finger-- bad video as most of them are for mandolins. No gloves. Just really unfortunate.
