JEFF, I'm loving the settings. After a few weeks of using my D750 as a webcam, It started to freeze only a few minutes into my Zoom Calls. I've pulled the lcd away from the housing to help with overheating but the camera still gets hot when running on RAVPower batteries. I"m getting the power adapter you mentioned and hope that will help resolve the issue.

Hi, great video! You did not mention one important point: audio delay. When using a camera via HDMI capture card as a WEBCAM and an external microphone plugged directly into the computer's audio interface, you need to set an audio delay, because the audio signal will arrive much faster in the pc, than the video signal. In my case it is 200ms, other people had even 500ms. I am curious of two things: 1) does your D750 pass the microphone signal from the in-camera mic or the camera's mic-jack to the HDMI port? in other words: does your D750 output any audio via HDMI? Mine does not. 2) did you find any other solution to solve this, apart from OBS or Radiodelay and Virtual Audio Cable? EDIT: googling around I found this, which suggestes it should be able to output audio via the HDMI. Maybe I should try this again, taking a closer look at my capure card and why it does not let me record that audio... www.atomos.com/compatible-cameras/d750

Thanks for this! I just installed OBS and realized maybe I could use my D750 with it + real time audio noise suppression and record video. Avoids an extra step in my audio/video post processing when creating content. Just need a capture interface +cables and a dummy battery.

Great video man. I'm eye-ballin' an 850 on CL now and got a lot out of this. Quick question though, does Nikon D 750/850 audio input allow you to select mic level as well as line level for audio? I ask because I use high quality audio gear outboard of the camera and send it into the camera for the best baked in audio. This completely bypasses the low quality camera mic preamp if line level is offered.

Enjoyed the camera setup part of the video ... Also enjoyed the focus information ... have the audio interface for my microphones but miss what you do with the camlink plugged into that other box. Isn't there a Delgato capture card somewhere in the loop? What about using the switch box consoles, Delgato makes a mini and regular sized one? OBS is pretty straight forward for basic recording, but streaming ... well, not so sure. Thanks ...

As long as it works well and can take an HDMI input and plug into your computer's USB port you should be good to go!

Hey thanks for this it's super useful. Could you tell my if QT allows one to set frame rate. I can only do 25fps at the moment? Also does your capture card have latency? How do calculate and compensate for this. Mine seem to have a 10 frame lag at 23.98fps which accounts for 458ms. That seems very high in terms of latency.

My older D7100 I managed to get video output via USB, not as good quality as expected but it works for webcam duties. I would guess that's an option on the D750 as well. The sensor *can* overheat if it's used for a long time with high ISO but the camera will shut down to protect the sensor if that happens.
@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling 4 года назад
Yeah, I saw the USB option, but since most Nikon cameras (maybe only a couple Z series being the exception) use USB 2.0 interfaces, they can't send through nearly enough bandwidth to get a clean 1080p signal. I really wish Nikon would standardize on USB-C throughout the lineup with power delivery (so you don't need a battery-swap power supply) along with full clean video output over USB-C. Would make the camera a lot more useful out of the box! Probably some manufacturers (hopefully all) are making that a must-have feature on their next bodies now that so many people are looking for better video options for web conferences.
@NickyNiclas

One simple question: I have a Logitech USB webcam I can easily use to record video with Windows' built in Camera app. I also have a D750, and for this I apparently need a "video capture device" with a cam link. Why? I don't get it. Why can't the PC act as the D750's video capture device just as it does with a standard web cam? Secondary question: Do you have a suggestion for a simpler studio setup for direct-to-PC video recording? I.e. do other cameras on the market (with depth-of-field) work by just being plugged in to a computer that has video recording software such as OBS installed on it?
@sardendibs
@sardendibs Год назад
Will answer my own question after some research: The USB output on a D750 is meant for uploading your files onto your computer. It doesn't have the bandwidth to stream 1080 60/30 video. But I bought a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable + a video grabber like in the video, only a 10$ version which seems to work just as well. And it works!

@JeffGeerling

QuickTime just gives two quality settings, "High" and "Maximum". So I choose "Maximum" :D - but after recording a clip, I usually export it as MP4 with HEVC so the file size is much smaller, and the quality is still very good. Otherwise the video is saved with like 100 Mbps video rate which results in very large files!

@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling 3 года назад
Hmm, the lag could be coming from your own computer, if it's a little older/slower. But the D750 also has a little more lag than my mirrorless Sony camera. To counter that, I can add a little delay to my audio (100-200ms) in OBS when live streaming, or using it as a 'virtual camera'. Otherwise you'd need to add a software plugin or hardware audio delay to your microphone, or use audio through the camera for the best result (e.g. plug a lavaliere mic into the mic input!).

Dear Mr Jeff. i have just started delving into live streaming thing. I am a musician & was thinking of having my band perform in jamming studio & live stream it. So i have bought an Atem Mini. I already have a 5 years old Sony camcorder with built in micro HDMI output. My son has a Nikon D750 [which is about 3 years old. My Sony camcorder worked flawlessly with the Atem Mini but unfortunately the Nikon D750 just wouldn't send any video output via its mini HDMI output. I have tried connecting the D750 to each of the Atem Mini's four HDMI inputs & only got blank screen on the HDMI monitor. But somehow the D750 can playback still photos playlist. My son tried a borrowed mirrorless Sony DSLR & it worked flawlessly. I don't understand whats wrong with the Nikon D750 when trying to use it as webcam. I have searched in RU-vid & Google to find the remedy for the Nikon D750 but so far i have not found any. I wonder if you could help me out?
@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling 4 года назад
For the D750, you have to make sure it is in Live View mode (pressing the Lv button on back), and then also switch it to movie (instead of photo) mode on the dial around that button). Then in the menus make sure the HDMI output is enabled, and make sure you have the appropriate mini HDMI to HDMI adapter for the camera. Other than that, if it's still not working, I'd consider getting the camera serviced or getting support from a Nikon-specific forum e.g. DPreview.com's forums.

"Nick-con" is how we say it in Japanese. It comes from Nikon's original name, "Nippon Kogaku," which literally means "Japan Optics." "NYE-con" sounds very strange to me. But then, it's Americans, David Douglas Duncan to be exact, that noticed the excellent optical performance of Nikkor lenses and spread its name to the world in the 1950s. So we can't complain if you guys pronounce it "NYE-con," although I don't know if Duncan pronounced it "NYE-con" or "Nick-con." Thanks for the wonderful video.

@@Xirevam It seems to be 50/50 in the US, at least in the midwest. I hear it both ways, but the few people I worked with early on who didn't shoot Canon said "NYE-con".

I say NYE-con in English and Nick-con on Swedish, because that's how I would pronounce it if I hadn't heard it ever before.

Have you tried using D750 with OBS? I'm struggling with the video delay
@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling 4 года назад
Yes; because of the delay, you have to go into OBS' advanced audio settings and add a delay to the mic there. It's annoying, and I think for my own setup it was like 300-400ms, somewhere in that range. But once I got it right, the sync was just as good as if mic was through camera.
