I have a question. I have an above ground pool. I just opened it for the season. 3 days after I opened it, it has there white snowflake looking stuff all over the top. How do I get rid of it.
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
The foamy floaters your seeing should disappear in a day or two. It's a reaction from your shock Sanitizing or your pool isn't balanced correctly. Double check your ph and if it's good it's just the chlorine off gassing.

How do I bleed the air out when there doesn’t seem to be a valve. Mine is a top mount and the pressure gauge screws directly into the side of the multiportvalve
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
If you backwash it will push the air out because the water flows from the bottom of the filter to the top forcing water and air out the backwash line

Thank you for all this great info. We are getting our sand replaced on Wednesday. They are putting in something called Glass that doesn’t need to ever be replaced, have you heard of this? Love your channel, it’s saving me so much as a first time pool owner.

Thanks Laura and yes glass is best in your filter. It does the best job of filtering out of the sand filter media's available.

when doing a backwash do u leave the valves open like it would be if it was in filter?
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
Yes valves should be open to the skimmer and drain if you have them to allow good water flow to the filter to clean it out while backwashing.
@laurab4570
@laurab4570 Год назад
Also, our sight glass isn’t clear. It’s cloudy no matter how long we backwash or rinse… it almost looks to have sand in it. Is that a sign that sand should be replaced by chance?
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
You can get a new sight glass for a few dollars there pretty cheap. The sand in the sight glass is normal. When you backwash it will throw a little sand out through the backwash line with the gunk your backwashing out of the filter.
@johngalt748
@johngalt748 Год назад
Every time I turn on the pump, I get 5-10 seconds of sand out the return jet. Why is this happening. Additionally, after back washing the unit, I turn to rinse setting and the sight glass fills with sand.
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
Sounds like you could have a broken lateral in the bottom of your filter. Laterals are the slotted tubes that keep the sand in the filter and let the water pass through. The only other thing is a pressure override tube that's in the filter that might of came lose. The only way to know for sure is to remove the sand and check it out.

Is it normal for some sand to blow out on rinse after backwashing?
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
Yes perfectly normal if there's just a little after backwashing. The sand does sometimes get kicked up with the gunk your backwashing out of the filter.
@Christo-pv7eb
@Christo-pv7eb Год назад
How can you tell the difference between sand in pool from faulty laterals in the filter and dead algae? Not sure what I got but the only way to get rid of it is through waste water. Then a few days later I have more small piles on the pool floor. Looks very similar to dead algae I had last year but not sure.
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
If the debris on the pool bottom is very light and mixes into the water it's definitely not sand from the filter. Filter sand is clean and uniform in size or grit. Most likely it's pollen or other airborne debris getting in your pool which in most cases is to small for a sand filter to filter out. Vacuuming to Waste is the key to keeping up with it. Also forgot the biggest clue to it being sand from the filter. There should only be small piles under your return fittings or jets on the pool

Just to clarify when backwashing and rinsing all the valves are in the same position as filter mode? Turn power off to the pump then turn the multi port valve to backwash and power pump back on? Thanks
@Poolelementary

Yes all you need to do is turn the pump off before switching your settings on your multiport valve to backwash or any other setting
@N3oma

So i have a pool with a multiport valve with a waise filter basket. Can i take basket out n just have all the leaves or debri . So take out the second filter basket while only doing waste?
@N3oma
@N3oma Год назад
The way my pool is set up is that it has two skimmer baskets one by my sand filter and one by the pool,
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
Hi Noma you need atleast one filter basket in at all times normally there is one in your pump and one in your skimmer. These prevent leaves and other debris from clogging lines and the impeller on your pump which pulls the water.
@N3oma
@N3oma Год назад
@@Poolelementary but if your putting it through waste, if you take out the pump basket as well isn't it all going to exit out the system anyway?

Could use explain why U would use Closed on the port valves? I didn't get anything from your explanation. Thnkx
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
I use the closed position anytime I'm cleaning out my pump basket on a side mount multiport valve to prevent the top couple of inches of water in the filter from Draining out while my pump lid is off but the closed position is mainly to stop the flow back from the return fittings on the pool when your dealing with a submerged pump situation meaning the pool water level is a higher elevation than your pump is. Example is all above ground pools. In Closed position and turning off the valve on the suction side of the pump will allow you to open your pump and clean out the basket or even more allow you to replace parts on your pump with out draining your pool in a submerged pump situation. I hope this helps explain why I use this setting.

great video, very informative and new pool owner. Just wondering what steps you take when cleaning/replacing your pump basket?
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary 7 месяцев назад
If your pump is hard to prime after removing your pump basket and cleaning it I usually turn the pump off and put the filters multi port valve to the off position and close any valves in front of the pump before taking the lid off the pump to clean out the basket. This will help hold the water in the lines to make it easier for the pump to prime up when your done. Just make sure to put valves back when done and before you turn the pump back on

Just put in a Hayward sand filter. My sight glass drains out all water after backwashing but don’t see any Lea is that normal?
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary 3 месяца назад
Yes this is normal if your backwash line runs lower than your sight glass. All the water should drain out then.
@burnsie13ish
@burnsie13ish Год назад
How much space should be in between the top surface of the sand and the top of the filter? 300 lb side mount hayward?
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
The sand should be close to where the top curve meets the straight vertical part of the filter or a little more than 2/3rds full. Filters do vary from one another though.
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary Год назад
The top of the sand should be at the widest part of the filter just under the top curve if that's clearer.

@@Poolelementary Thank you! I find sand on my driveway after backwashing. Is that normal? I guess I should top it off with a bag now and then because it was a little low. I use that Z sand, and it is pretty effective but IDK why I see it on my driveway after backwashing.

Thank you for the info, wandering if you can help, my pool has green water and i don't know if it's salt water or chlorine..!! How do i find out??
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary 6 месяцев назад
If your Pool is a salt water pool you will have a chlorine generator which is a device that turns the salt into chlorine. This device will be plumbed into the return lines going back to the pool after the heater if you have one. They will have a power cord going to it and will look like a electronical device. If your curious on what these look like I would look up pool chlorine generators for pools on the internet. Should show you a bunch of different styles.

I was hoping you'd show the sight glass when it's in filter mode. I read that there should be no water in it during normal (filter) operation?
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary 7 месяцев назад
Sorry and yes there shouldn't be any water going past the sight glass and out the backwash line in filter setting. If there is try re seating the valve by lifting it up and down a couple time with the pump off. If you still have water coming through the site glass it's time for a new multi port gasket.

My filter after being backwashed is usually 15 psi. Lately after cleaning it’s down around 4-5 psi. Gets good flow from the return outlets in the pool. But the pressure relief valve doesn’t spray hard like it used too. What would/could be the cause? Almost as if the pump got weaker. No other valves closed or pinched off..
@Poolelementary
@Poolelementary 4 месяца назад
My only guess is some gunk got up into the pressure Guage and air bleeder and is partially plugging it but that's only a guess. I see this when I am vacuuming gunk and algae.
@adammidcal2425

@@Poolelementary honestly that was my only guess. We had a styrofoam boogie board break and contaminate the pool. I’ve been thinking those little beads are all in the filter as the smaller ones could pass through the skimmer basket and the pump basket as well. Anyways it’s been about 3 years since I’ve changed the sand. Looks like a fun little project next weekend.
