Same here :( Whenever I try it is so uncomfortable that I stop after 2 passes. I use Astra Platinum blades. Would using Feather blades make it easier?

@supernaturel7687 No, Feather blades are the most aggressive blades. I've been trying out a Feather blade with a Viking razor, and I have not been having a good time. Using a 34C with a Merkur blade, on the other hand, is smooth like butter.

I use Proraso Blue, Red, & Green pre & post shave the same as I use a razor and blade. It's mandatory and religion. To say I'm pleased with the results is an understatement. Great review as always, Brother Geo!!!

Great video on how to properly use a pre-shsve. I've been looking at pre shave oils, but the price is just silly for 1oz. So, I started looking to make my own. My first, coconut oil (the solid paste my wife had in the kitchen). Worked really well for both my face and scalp. Same consistency as the one you used first. Second, the same coconut oil with a few drops of grape seed oil. *WOW* this really stepped it up a serious notch. Possibly the best shave I've had since switching to DE wet shaving. Now, I'm following a recipe I found online. Equal parts of castor, olive, grape seed, and jojoba oils (2 tablespoons each / 28-30ml / 1oz). The grape and jojoba are to thin out the castor and olive. I added sweet orange (for citrus) [I thought about patchouli (earthy / woodsy)] essential oil for fragrance (15 drops have a really nice scent to this 4oz total mixture). All together I'm about $30.00 into this. I only bought 2oz of the grape and jojoba oils because the wife and I have never bought these before. But this leaves me enough for another batch of 4oz. At $15.00 to $50.00 per ounce to buy, I'm way ahead on a massive savings. And since this worked out so well, I'm getting some bottles from Amazon and making these for gifts. Should be great for wife and daughters, especially their under arm.

Great balance of education and entertainment Geo! I’ve been using pre-shave since starting with the Art of Shaving products, which always emphasize prepping with oil before lathering up. Though now I find pre creams are the best, since they’re cheaper, contain more product and are the most lather-friendly (ie, easy rinsing and no blade clogging). And for one of your next vids, will you be breaking out another straight? It’s been a while, so that’d be a treat:)

I use CREMO as a pre-shave. Works like a charm. Add water to your hands and massage the Cremo into the face until it becomes super slick. Paint on lather.

Thanks for the videos Geofatboy. I am quite new to safety razors and brushes and I have questions. I have the green proraso pre-shave cream but when I apply it, it tends to make the lather difficult to apply (it slides and become quite thin and patchy). Should I let the pre-shave cream dry before lathering? What quantity should I use? I saw videos where they put quite a great amount of it, something like a walnut size and some others just a big pea. Proraso video itself is not super helpful and the instructions on the packaging is not very detailed regarding how to use it. Thanks again, your video are super useful.

How much are you using to apply the pre-shave cream? The size of a pea or just slightly bigger is enough for a shave to properly lubricate the face. If your shaving cream is sliding off or becoming thin and patchy, it could mean you've either used too much pre-shaving cream (unlikely) or your shaving cream lather is too thin. Don't let the pre-shaving cream dry before lathering. Again quantity to use is generally about the size of a pea or if you used one finger to "claw" some pre-shave out, that's about right. As long as your face is slick enough that is enough. You'll know which sections of your face are more sensitive than others and thus need more protection from a blade. Walnut size is too much in my experience but also many others. It's wasted product essentially and would be better used for another shave or for a second round if needed. However, everyone is different with different skin types.

Sir.. I recently bought Proraso Pre Shave.. now I'm little bit confused here, I'm a Face Lather kindda guy.. not been using bowls.. and if I apply pre shave cream, then if I face lather with synthetic brush, won't the pre shave be gone away with the hard brushing on the face?? Won't tht defy the purpose?? And if I just do paint strokes then not a good lather gets formed on face. Plz suggest

Not at all, the pre-shave soaks in to the beard and softens it, then apply the shaving cream.

Great clip. I'm currently using the Proraso Lime Pre-Shave (in a small jar), I've also used the Pacific Bamboo Pre-Shave and Somerset Pre-Shave Oil. I hadn't seen the Taylor of Old Bond Street Pre-Shave products before.

My routine: Wetting my face with lukewarm water, apply Proraso green or white, wait until it is absorbed, put a hot towel on my face, then apply a pre-shave oil, prepare my lather and after the oil is absorbed; I start applying the lather and start shaving

I have problems going against the grain on the mustache area and neck (massive irritation). I’ve notice you only went against the grain on the cheeks. Does this lead to an uneven shave? The neck I can get pretty close with just WTG. But the mustache and chin area seem like they can never really get BBS without ATG.

I have a Maggard 24mm synthetic shaving brush. I wet it about 2, 3 seconds under the faucet, then I squeeze the hairs to eliminate the excess water. After this I face lather a shaving cream, but I don't have enough lather for 3 passes. What am I doing wrong?

you really got to put some elbow grease when lathering. If using a soap really work the brush in there like the soap owes you money.

You can put them in a "blade bank" or what I do is put the spend blade back in its wrapper and fold it in half. When you fold the blade in half it will snap in two and can be safely disposed of.
