dude i love your videos there's a real scarcity of informative tree climbing videos on youtube with quality production value. Ive been climbing for about a year and a half now and your content has been tremendous for me.

I noticed both times your Quickie was installed with the release pins rubbing on the branch. I highly recommend flipping that over so the release pins are facing away from your anchor. There's the obvious possibility of opening the Quickie, but also jamming grit and sap into the slic pins. You can also eliminate two failure points and set the same canopy anchor with just the Quickie.

Thanks for the heads up on the Quickie. Someone mentioned on Insta that they have had one of the tabs break on their slick pin! Re the Soft 8 vs the Quickie on an Alpine Butterfly - It definitely retrieves easier using a Soft 8, because it floats on the rope. But the Quickie on an Alpine Butterfly forces the working end of the rope to travel through it (at a very acute angle if you’ve redirected) which causes a lot of drag. Its not always the right option, so this video is just sharing the info so climbers have another knowledge tool in the tool box.
@Daniel08353
@Daniel08353 6 месяцев назад
I was thinking the same thing on just use the Quickie. Then I thought about it, and realized there is both the alpine butterfly loop and main working end next to each other in the Quickie. This explains why two redirects can be very difficult to pull out.
@Daniel08353
@Daniel08353 6 месяцев назад
@@REECOIL_DOT_COMwhat about adding a pulley on the main working-end, and Quickie attaching it to the alpine butterfly loop?
@TimberTrainer
@TimberTrainer 6 месяцев назад
@Daniel08353 Using the butterfly as a jam knot allows the Quickie to float like a ring or soft 8. You are correct in trying to redirect with the Quickie attached to the eye of the butterfly. That would be quite difficult. I only use that technique when I know there's no redirect involved. When redirects are involved, I use a floating Quickie with a spare carabiner in the eye of the butterfly for extra security.

Very nice video. btw, 'quick-draw sling' = dogbone. Also, having the carabiner nose upward is indeed a best practice when the carabiner is used as masterpoint anchor. During trainings, the saying then goes ; always screw down so you don't screw up !

We don’t use screw gate carabiners for life support in our industry. We’re required to use a minimum triple auto locking carabiners.

Great video as always. When climbing SRT, I typically try to isolate a limb as you have done and use a alpine butterfly with a quickie to grasp the limb, similar to what you have done with the soft 8 configuration. When I reach the top, I can disconnect the quickie from the climbing end of the rope and reconnect in a similar manner to what you have done with the soft 8. I was curious if you see any issue with this arrangement. It is basically the same, just with a quickie in place of the soft 8. I'm in the Midwest-US and love your videos. Keep them coming. You have an excellent way of explaining things and then demonstrating them. I have been climbing for several years and have taught my 22 year old son how to climb. He has been climbing for 1 1/2 years and climbs better than I ever did.
@Kevin.L_
@Kevin.L_ 10 месяцев назад
Same here. I'd just use the quickie in the butterfly. I've seen these soft 8's available and couldn't think of a good use. I'm still clueless. My son is about the same age and easily outclimbs me. Especially rope walking!

Hi @tholi1052 Thanks for your comment. It's awesome to hear how you're passing on your knowledge to your son! And yeah, the next generation climbs so well. Especially with the gift of wisdom from people (you) that have the experience. Absolutely, I think a lot of people run just a Quickie in the alpine butterfly (definitely double check the instructions that come with it though). For me the only benefit of the Soft 8 over just the Quickie is the reduced friction when pulling your line out. The gap created by the length of the Soft 8 means that when retrieving, the running rope makes contact with less of the anchor limbs surface area compared to just the Quickie in the Alpine Butterfly (exacerbated if it's a big limb) and you notice it when retrieving your line with multiple redirects. With just the Quickie the rope makes contact with probably close to 95% of the anchor point. Other than that, the Quickie alone is a lighter, more compact and cheaper option 😁🙌 The best low friction canopy anchor for me was the alpine butterfly captured between the side plates of the DMM Pinto. DMM has said that's not correct use though... Thanks so much for your kind words about our videos! We'll keep making them and trying to get better every time. All the best to you and your son 😊🤙 P.s. @Kevin.L_ @nonaeme it seems everyone has the same question 😁

Couldn’t you attach the Quickie directly to the alpine butterfly and simply make the eye of the butterfly longer to simulate the length of the soft 8 in order to reduce friction?

if you had a sewn eye you could’ve done this exact setup but with the sewn eye wrap around a branch, back down through the quickie and locked off with a carabiner cause the carabiner can’t go through the quickie. to advance your system, just undo the carabiner and take the sewn eye out of the quickie, give yourself slack in your system and then throw the sewn eye with a throw ball further up the tree to your next high point. flick your rope, work it so the sewn eye with the throw ball comes back down to you, take off throw ball and put sewn eye back through the quickie, lock it off with a carabiner through the sewn eye and cinch it up. soooo much quicker and less confusing.

Is this the system you recommend for a beginner? I don’t have any gear or experience (but you have to start somewhere). A lot of info I see from the US shows folks climbing using spurs and lanyards but that seems very tree specific to pine, fir, and cedars. I will be climbing eucalyptus which seems to require something similar to your video. Trying to figure out minimum gear to get into climbing safely. This setup up seems pretty advanced though… thank you for any suggestions you have! Love your videos

Why not clippin the quick link INTO the alpine so it will save a biner? I'd only use a quickie into the alpine btw but I like the idea of using the quickdraw string to keep the AB slick and tight and still have room to grab on big branches ❤

Too much friction when dropping over multiple redirects
@Zogg1281
@Zogg1281 10 месяцев назад
Great video, I'm just thinking that there's a far simpler setup that uses 2 fewer pieces of kit..... instead of tying your alpine butterfly/stopper knot and then adding the quickdraw, quick link and the notch quickie, is there any reason you can't get rid of the quick link and quickdraw, then use the loop in the alpine butterfly with the quickie to do the same job? 🤔 It's basically 2 fewer pieces of kit that could potentially fail, and you can tie the butterfly with as big or small a loop as needed, which means you can tailer it more to the size of branch that you're using. It also means that you don't have to waste a carabiner just to make sure the loop of the alpine butterfly doesn't decide to leave the party before you're finished using it 😂
@REECOIL_DOT_COM
@REECOIL_DOT_COM 10 месяцев назад
Love that solution! I’ll have a play with making the AB much bigger to suit the branch size. We have some rainforest climbing coming up that I might use that on (mainly to reduce the amount of gear we have to him in with). Pos new video coming up, thanks bro!! 😊🤙

That's pretty much what I do on most SRS climbs. I call it the floating Quickie technique. I start with the Quickie in the eye of the butterfly, set from the ground. Once I get to my high tie-in, I install the Quickie above the butterfly and throw a biner in the eye for extra security.
@LTawesomesauce
@LTawesomesauce 10 месяцев назад
When retrieving a floating quickee there's waaay more friction than using a soft 8 and if you have multiple redirects it will pretty much make it impossible to retrieve
@fideofeed
@fideofeed 10 месяцев назад
I use the quickie in the same way @rjamisongsx does by putting the quickie in the eye of the alpine butterfly and the climbing side of my line, but if I anticipate redirecting then I add a floating ring above it. I see no need for the soft 8. Even if the alpine is smaller, the quickie is rated to side load so I’m never bothered by how small the diameter is or how small the eye of the alpine is.
