Knowing how to use a stud finder to mount a tv is easier than ever. In this video I walk you through the simple steps of finding a stud.
I also give you a very useful tip on how to make finding studs easier than you think.
Studs are vertical supports in our walls. If you want to hang something heavy on the wall it's best to anchor it to one or more studs.
Some things we commonly anchor to studs:
* Wall Mounted TV's
* Shelves
* Mirrors
* Heavy Pictures
* Anything that would break if it fell
Studs are located every 16 inches on center. This means once you find one stud, there will likely be one 16 inches away.
The ability to accurately finding a wall stud is the first step to saving yourself money. This can mean you no longer need to hire a handyman to do something simple.
Once you complete your next home improvement project you will love the way it makes you feel. You will be able to brag to your friends and family that you were able to do something like mount your TV, or hange a beautiful piece of art.

Hey Kev, thanks for demistifying, how uh stud-finder works. I really like your tips. Small drill bit, if wood comes out, you know you've hit a stud. Go between 2 marks, left and right, and you even showed how to find a stud, without a stufld finder. Pretty cool, Kev. Thanks ( : Thumbs-Up 👍🏻🔥

Would this stud finder also work through shiplap? I just purchased one and installing a ductless AC unit on my shiplap wall and have little room for error.

Instead of using a drill bit to test the 2x4, I would use a very thin nail and gently hammer it in. One in the middle and one each about half an inch on either side.

What about when you use this and the 1st 2 holes are to some sort of metal?
@woodworkfamily9787
@woodworkfamily9787 Год назад
are you in a building that might have metal studs? they are typically used in industrial type buildings, like offices, etc. You would want to use sheet metal screws if this is the case. they make some with drill bits on the tip of the screws.

Sorry for this dumb question, but if I’m drilling something onto my wall, do I drill into the stud or on sides where it’s hollow?
@woodworkfamily9787
@woodworkfamily9787 3 года назад
That's a good question. The goal of finding a stud is so we can drill into them. This will allow a better hold on your screw. If there is no stud where you want to put a screw you can use an anchor.

I'm putting bords up on a wall. Sometimes I miss my mark. If you got more than one bord going up, what is my best approach in finding the stud?
@woodworkfamily9787
@woodworkfamily9787 Год назад
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by you are putting boards up on your wall. Is it something like ship lap where there are a lot of horizontal boards being attached to a wall? I would find the studs first and then make a vertical mark with a level to be able to see the studs as you work. You may want to drill pilot holes to be sure first, and do this in at least three locations for each stud (top, middle, bottom).
@booshveg

is this only applicable to dry walls or i can use it to find wires or metal pipes inside brick walls ?
@woodworkfamily9787
@woodworkfamily9787 3 месяца назад
The stud finder in this video won't work on a brick wall because it is too dense. In fact exterior walls have too many layers for them to work. I'm not sure if there are any that are designed for these walls.

I feel scared. I may be catching on slow but am I drilling my screw in between the marks where my stud finder beeped as you did I. The video? I do t want to get electrocuted. I know I should just hire a pro but I can’t afford that every time
@rdorenegades5849
@rdorenegades5849 2 года назад
I think I found the stud because it was harder to drill into the wall. Can you give me feedback it’s also over the outlet
@woodworkfamily9787
@woodworkfamily9787 2 года назад
That's one way to tell. Another is if you look at the tip of the drill bit and there is a little wood in the grooves.
@rdorenegades5849
@rdorenegades5849 2 года назад
What size bit did you use?
@woodworkfamily9787
@woodworkfamily9787 2 года назад
The size depends on the screw you will be using. You want the bit to be the thickness of the shaft of the screw without the threads. You will be clearing out the wood for the screw to go in, but you still want the threads to grip the stud.

i might sound like an idiot, y cant i just drill something on the wall will it collapse if its not on the stud?
@woodworkfamily9787
@woodworkfamily9787 Год назад
If you want to hang something like a picture they make hangers that don't need a stud. Here is a link so you can see what I mean amzn.to/3QoQbZJ (you may need to paste it in the browser). But if you want to hang something heavier like a tv wall mount then finding a stud is required or else it will fall off the wall. This is a good question, thank you for it!

Never drill holes you do not need, doing so can weaken the integrity of the sheetrock

What is the difference between the setting deep scan and stud scan
@woodworkfamily9787
@woodworkfamily9787 10 месяцев назад
With the "stud scan" setting we are scanning for studs behind drywall. This is typically 1/2" to 3/4" thick. With "stud deep scan" we are able to scan for studs up to 1-1/2" deep. This could be behind other surfaces (not wood). I'm thinking maybe a soundproofing for a music studio.
