Hey bud I just did a job 8in x 4ft tile. I used spin doctor for the first time. Up to the grouting stage I was happy. But i knocked the stems out the next day on half the job and on the third day grouted and found that the spin doctors were forcing the tile under pressure and ends began popping up. I troweld and back buttered and never thought this would happen. The company set the job to install over a ardexed plywood that previously had smaller tile. Any idea why this happened and how to prevent it...

Been a residential remodeler for over a decade. First used these 6 months ago on a large job for my new business. I'll never install large format tile again without these. Made the 24"x24" tiles go down completely flat and level. You can slide a 5 gallon bucket 30 feet across the tile without it catching a lip. Truly amazing. Saves so much time.

I'm familiar with getting cement to the correct consistency as I've been a mason for too long. A question I'm trying to cut a corner and removing my tub. Just having the space now a shower with 17" square tiles. Have a marine plywood floor. Before I put down the top bed ready to tile, could I use a wall board cut to size and screw it down like crazy instead of doing it by hand? Then put the 40 mil plastic down and then trowel it as it should be for the tile?

@@Titantitan001 I just did it the right way and just troweled it to slope to the drain and it does drain the water. I didn't want to make a mistake. Any flexing could cause a leak if I put wall cement board on the floor.

Hello mate, Pro Tiler from England here. Just a little tip. Tile lippage clips help on near enough flat walls and floors, but some DIYers might watch this and use these on bumpy surfaces which is when problems occur, as the clips either raise up the previous low tile or bring down a raised tile, creating air sockets underneath. All you need to do is knock on the tile and you will hear the hollow points. Also dont knock the clips out with a rubber mallet especially on a lighter ceramic tile as the mallet can leave black marks which are a pain to clean off. Polished porcelain you might get away with but just a tip. Good luck mate wish you all the best 👍

@AllBayEveryDay

@@mart9585 I’ve been tiling 11 years. I only use self leveling clips for anything larger than 12x24 because it helps to keep the tile plum and level. The cons to using it are if the wall isn’t plumb or flat than it will cause voids in the thinset behind the tile and causing the tile not to adhere properly.

I started a tile job using the home depot wedges. After about 10 foot by 10 foot area switched to the screw on Marshalltown leveling system. The Marshalltown are easy to install and if you have a problem they are easy to back off to either remove or add more mortar if needed, The wedges have a tendency to grab the tile and push them apart if you are using a grippy tile. The tool will also wreck your hand if you use it a lot. While these to a good job of keeping the edges of the tiles even, you can still have an uneven floor when you are done, which will show up when you install baseboard. Always check your tiles with a level to make sure you have them flat and even with each other. Both do have the occasional tendency to not break off cleanly as you can see right here 8:56 where he says they break off cleanly, when they clearly did not. The little piece of plastic can be cleaned up with a multi tool or a sharp razor knife, just be very careful to to chip the tile.

Actually, you want to apply the thinset the way he has shown (if you are laying your tiles the way he is - i.e. long side parallel to the horizon). You always comb the thinset in straight lines perpendicular to the long side of the tile to aid in removing trapped air. Your air channels need to be collapsed more: you need to move your tile left to right more in order to push all the air out of the grooves. Essentially, you need to move the tile about 1.5 x the width of the groove. so in this case, it needed to be moved at least 3/8" from left to right, several times, to ensure all the air has been pushed out.
@RollingThunder808
@RollingThunder808 5 лет назад
It's better to use the 1/2" notched trowel like he said. Back buttering isn't necessary and is a waste of time in my opinion. But you need to use the right trowel. Definitely need to move it side to side. To check it I tap it with a screwdriver handle. You can hear the difference between hollow and solid. If you check for coverage after back buttering by removing the tile it may be deceiving.
@LimogesDiver
@LimogesDiver 5 лет назад
@@RollingThunder808 You ALWAYS backbutter large format tiles: only way you know for sure you have good adhesion. The width of the notch increases with the length of the air channels created by the trowel. This is to allow the air to escape when you're seating the tile. I agree there are obvious pieces that are above the grout line. This would show once grouted. I like the system but would be better if the clips had a weak point built into then when manufactured to ensure they break at the same point consistently which was obvious you were not getting. Great video (super idea to use glass tiles). I don't think you mentioned that the Ridgid system has "corner" pieces which can level four corners with a single spindle (so you could have used one instead of the four.

THANK YOU. I dont know who makes this and what types there are but this seems like exploitation by manuracturer. Why use freaking 8 pieces when u can use 1 to hold down corners of 4 tiles?!

@@MrExcessum I am looking for an answer to a similar question. I am about to try these on a 200 sq' shower project. My question is, if you are using spacers to supplement these clamps, can you simply use the "B" clips for everything? It appears the only thing missing with the B clip is the little tabs that would go between the adjacent tiles - either intersecting or brick patterned.. Am I correct? As you pointed out, why use several, OR buy several different types, if the straight "B" clip can be used for all.

I am installing a wall mural that uses 24x24 tiles. If the tile thickness is not exactly uniform there is going to be an issue. These systems use the science of leveling the bottom of the tile and there will be some lipage when applying the top anchors. Any ideas other than not using leveling system and just leveling by running the trowel across the seams when setting? I have tried a dry fit on a flat surface using 2 clips on each side and there are lipage issues.

I plan to put down 12x24" tiles using the wedges system and your videos are great! Thanks. But I have Two Questions- Question 1: Can the wedges be tightened too much, or do the pliers tighten them with the right amount of pressure? Question 2: Does using the wedge system alleviate the need to use a level to make sure the floor tiling does down level, or does it just assure the tiles are flat with one another--that is, can I just lay a row of tile along the wall using the wedges and keep going and assume all will be level? I can imagine some tiles will need more thin set under them than others. Thanks.

@LandbergTileTV 6 лет назад
Hi David! To answer your questions, you could theoretically tighten the clips down too much, but at that point they will break and you will have to pull the tile and insert another clip. Also, the leveling system usually only assures that the tiles are flat with one another and yes, some tiles will need more thin set than others. Please let me know if you have any more questions and thanks for watching! 👍
@ds61821
@ds61821 6 лет назад
This is my first time using leveling wedges. I now get that the extra thin set needed can be added and then the leveling clips used to level the finished height needed. Also, I noticed that the official QEP video on using their Curved LASH system does NOT flatten the ridges. See their video here cued to the right time--ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jnsHvrRB_mg.htmlm12s. The "expert" just drops the tile on the Curved clip and on the ridges without flattening out the ridges. So I returned the QEP Curved clips and bought the Flat clips. Sal DiBlasi said that the ridges need to be flattened and to slide the tile then finish back into the clip. As I see it, only the Flat clips will permit this flattening of the ridges to get the full coverage needed. I'm learning a lot and want to make sure I get the fullest coverage of thin set needed. THANKS.

You don't tile uneven floor use self leveling compound first to make it flat then it's much easier and faster to tile whole floor.

great video! The glass tiles are a great idea to teach us how to install tiles in a proper way :) The rigid system looks to be a pain if you have a large amount of tile to install. Getting screwed to unscrew :D

Yes sir, I was hoping for a glance inside with the glass, and a wedge system is much easier to gather after they are knocked off. Thanks for the watch and comment 💯

Have you ever used one of these systems with tile installed on Kerdi board? The Kerdi board is rather "soft", and I worry about damaging it while removing the caps/wedges.

Hi, may I ask, with the way the glass panels aka tiles are installed, won't the air pockets left in the tiles cause the tiles to crack when they have expanded and contracted over time?

He did mention that normally you back butter the tile before install..this was to demonstrate how to use the different level systems. Not how to lay tile..

Almost perfect. A+ for effort. The glass has no deep bisque to key in. Also, a tile "mechanic" like me has to beat in the tiles for full coverage, flatness and test for breakage. Travertine stone, for example is a Lot more brittle than glass. And, after doing all that work, it would be a painsteaken process to have to remove and replace broken tiles. Cute system for DIYs installs though.

Can you confirm if the wall you mocked up was perfectly flat as well? Looked like it had uneven horizontal lines on it, good test for the self leveling clips if it was uneven.

Would make it slower and a chance to over tighten and crack the tiles. I think it is better because you have a finer adjustment with your fingers that with the tools but thats just me
@RangerCaptain11A
@RangerCaptain11A 4 года назад
@@MrJFoster1984 you can't crack the tile by over tightening - the clip fails before that. but then you have to struggle to get a new clip in that spot. a drill adaptor to remove the cap after would be helpful.

Would like to see a video of what happens when the underlayment isn't flat/level/plumb. That is when these doodads get you into trouble. Low spots create air pockets. High spots transfer lippage to other corners and can also cause multiple air pockets. The tabs do not always break completely, leaving the occasional piece of tab remaining in the grout joint. Any tiles with delicate edges can be a problem getting it removed without chipping. And one last issue... When you are doing a large job and stop at the end of the day, the next row you lay the following morning may have and unfixable high or low spot to deal with because you sucked the edge down too far.

I call them cheater spacers. I haven't seen a perfect wall or floor in a long time , and I've been tiling for 33 years. Floors have dips and humps that need to be built up to be flat! Straight edge helps when installing, clips won't. Walls same thing. Trying to plumb a wall , or when there is a dip in the wall from the corner beed and you have to build out to make it flat and plumb, its a different story.
