What is a tether? How do you use a tether with a tree saddle? Is a tether necessary for saddle hunting? In this video I'm going over all the information relating to tree saddle tethers. When saddle hunting, your tether is incredibly important. Here's everything you need to know about choosing a safe tether for your tree saddle.

Its crazy how the HSS is the standard in the industry for years and what ive always been using. Yet i just recently found out how low its tensile strength or load weight strength is compared to the other climbing rope on the market. I have the HSS rope strap already and used it for a long time but now knowing this, i may have to make my own tree strap like my lineman rope jus for peace of mind and added safety...It was not displayed in several descriptions i read, took a few searches to find the strength of the HSS tree tether rope. Your vids and tethrd vids are helping me so much in building and using my brand new saddle setup this season! Thanks!

Hey thanks for putting these videos out there. I am new to saddle hunting and ended up here from the Tethrd website looking for tips to improve comfort. I have a climbing and rope rescue background and the saddle is a great fit for me. I do however see some serious issues with how you are rigging your tether. For your fixed loop you should not be using a overhand knot and definitely not one with that short of a tail. You should be using a figure 8 knot with a fist length tail. Also using a overhand knot as your stopper knot is a bad idea they are notorious for coming undone on their own. A far better system is to tie another figure 8 knot in the end of your rope and clip it into the carabiner with your prussic that way the end of the rope is attached to your bridge and it is impossible to fall off of. I use a piece of 8mm cordage that we use in rescue to build heavy anchors available as accessory cordage at any climbing shop ensure that it has a breaking strength of 15kn (1kn=220lbs ish). For my prussic I use a piece of 6mm cordage your prussic is actually the weakest point in the system hence why being connected to the end of the rope is important. A prussic actually acts as a clutch yes it bites when loaded in any direction but it actually slips once it hits approximately 7Kn of load and thats if it is tied correctly if it is loose and you fall on it they can slip at much lower forces or not catch at all. I would not advise using that HSS safety strap the prussic is to large of a diameter making it more likely to slip although the stopper on the end looks solid. Sorry if this came across as a negative comment I found your videos very helpful in getting started but I see so many hunters making poor rigging decisions when hunting out of treestands.

What is that little device that keeps loop from loosening from tree when there is no pressure on tether ? Looks like a slide of some king. thx AJ

What's the difference between the Ropeman 1 you link to on Amazon & the Ropeman 1 on REI that is $25 cheaper? The only difference I can see is the one on Amazon has "KML" on it & the one on REI has "MMB" on it instead.

What can you put on the inside of the carabiners so they stay silent when clipping them onto other metal parts of the system?

You could use tape or stealth strips. I don't have any noise though.

vorsteg V ah! That's just a lightweight nylon cover for my ropeman & carabiner. I should have covered that. Good catch.

After watching your tether and lineman belt videos, can 2 HSS Saftey straps be used for both?

Same question. Plenty of Amsteel left over from making my bridge. Also wondering about using it for a linesman belt.

Completely new to this, so this may be a dumb question. Why do you wrap the tether line only once around the tree and not twice?
@mattbaggett7539
@mattbaggett7539 5 лет назад
On a smaller diameter tree you could certainly do that and it would likely stay up "better". I used to worry about my tether slipping down the tree but it just doesn't. One thing with a double wrap around the tree.....if you needed to move to the other side of a large tree...you might not have enough tether rope to work with.

I know this question is a year late, and for for disclosure I am just now getting into saddle hunting, but I do have a background in abseiling, so perhaps I can give a bit of insight. One thing to reconsider when asking oneself whether or not to wrap the tether around the tree twice will be rope integrity. A rope will have a weight rating-my ropes for example are all rated well above 7000 lbs-however that rating is not valid in all circumstances. Putting bends into a rope will weaken it. I don’t mean permanently, but while it’s bent. The math is complicated, but as a rule of thumb you don’t want acute angle bends-this is why a knot such as a figure 8 weakens a rope much less than, say, a double overhand, for instance. Now, wrapping around a 15-18 inch tree is by no means an acute angle-especially when compared to a proper knot-however we must consider stacking tolerances. A rope which is rated at 1000 lbs, and already weakened by 40-60% because of the knots one uses, and THEN another 2-3% because of wear-and tear, and THEN another 2-3% because of weather, and THEN another 2-3% because of the first wrap around the tree, plus ANOTHER 2-3% because of the second-you see my point. That 1000 lbs rated rope my have the practical integrity of a 350 lbs rope while under field conditions, and that’s fine to support 200 lbs of hunter and equipment, but if that rope gets shock-loaded in a fall, you may have a bad day. Of course this is why proper climbing rope is as strong as it is, and why you shouldn’t skimp on the tether that may save your life. I use static abseiling rope for my lineman’s belt (in fact if I’m not mistaken it’s the exact same bluewater rope seen in this video) but I go a step further for any rope that I may take a fall on, and use dynamic climbing rope, which has a larger amount of stretch to it so that when your fall is arrested, you don’t come to a stop TOO suddenly. Be safe out there, and happy hunting!
