How To Use A Wohlhaupter Boring And Facing Head. UPA 2 and UPA 3

Showing the settings needed to bore and face using Wohlhaupter UPA 2 or UPA 3 Heads.
CORRECTION !!! to my description of using the stop plates for facing to a specific diameter. You CAN use the handle and when the stops hit the pin, the TOP pin will pop up and stop the feed. That was the first time I had ever used it for facing and I think that I was being over cautious. Sorry for the error.

I am the one who asked for the demo and it was great! Mine is a #2 and it is just the head. I have had it for 3 years and been afraid to use it because it was quite clear to me that it was much smarter than I was. I searched high and low for information with little success. Your willing ness to share your expertise is wonderful, thank you!

Hi Bob, so glad that it helped. Did not realise until I went to edit that the top of it was out of view when I was telling you about how to reverse it to wind back to the start. It was Push the top pin back down, might need to rotate the top ring slightly to find a hole, the side pin needed pulling out. Thanks for watching. Enjoy using yours now. Regards.

Great video, the small ones are rare where I am and very expensive. I find myself doing small work with the larger heads The full kits are nice but I have not seen anyone really use those items anyway. I may pick up a 3" without the kit. Thanks for the demo!

As I mentioned in Dee Dee's channel, these were also made under licence here in Japan by Karoda Precision and MST. The Japanese versions are just as good as the German made ones in my opinion, and are much more available and reasonably priced over here. A typical set is under $400 US, and I've paid as little as $150 for one of my collection.

Hello Bruce, thank for the view. I have a correction to make on the video description. The stops Will cut out the feed when the stops hit, the top button will pop up and stop the feed. So you will be able to use the handle for feeding. I just tried my UPA 2 and the top button popped up. My UPA 3 must be a bit harder to do, I was probably being over cautious as TBH that was the first time I had ever used it for facing. Regards.

@@daveticehurst4191 it is a very nifty piece of engineering. What is really impressive is the way the head does the disengament. I took it appart and going to clean it. The only piece missing is the lock nut with 6 holes to lock the adjustment rings as you explained it: it is impressive that that nut lockes the ?jib? and the lower ring as you demonstrated. Cheers
@therealspixycat
@therealspixycat Год назад
@@daveticehurst4191 if it snaps out of your hand means that there is to much pressure on the adjustmentscrew at the side near the divetail. If you turn it almost out means that it will disengage at little tool pressure. I think your adjustment screw is quite deep. This system should work for the two auto stops plus it is a protection when you run into something

Hi Paul, yes a few teething problems to sort out with the camera. I would like to use an external microphone but it is not as good as the built in mic. My neighbour is an Audio man and he will have a look at it for me, expect it is my finger trouble. LOL I like the zoom and manual focus too. Going to do another one over the next 2 days. Stay tuned. Hello Russell, DOH ! you have caught me out. LOL When I mentioned Aciera FC 3, I don't actually own one. We had plenty at Philips and I scrounged a High Speed Head off of one to fit onto my Tom Senior Junior Universal Milling machine that I show in my Shop Tour in case you have not seen it yet. SORRY. They use the W 20 collets. I must be more careful in what I say next time LOL. Thanks for watching and the comment. Hopefully a new video tomorrow or Saturday. Regards.

@@daveticehurst4191 No problems, Dave. Now for my own confession: I do own an Aciera F3, complete with the high speed head (which I recognised instantly on your milling machine), and dividing head. What I don't have is the camera and equipment needed to make videos.

Great video Dave ! You can buy a cheap car for less than what you will pay for one of those these days 🤣 - nice bit of kit if you have a use for it though ! One thing you don't see much of these days on RU-vid is using a toolmakers chair , used to be something that an apprentice would make and can be a handy tool , if you have one it would make for an interesting video for some I'm sure .

Thank you for watching and telling me about your Country's Import Duties. As you say it make it impossible for you to purchase Professional tooling at a sensible price. These heads are quite complicated inside so would be difficult for you to replicate. Replacement small parts are available but not the main body. I do have a parts list of the small bits that are dimentioned. If you would like a copy of that then send me an email to davesozzyworkshop@gmail.com and I will send it to you. Regards.

@daveticehurst4191 2 месяца назад
Hi thanks for the view and question. Yes you can adjust the sensitivity by adjusting screw 9 shown on the instruction sheet. As far as I know it changes the tripping point if say the tool jams or is too big a cut. If you email me davesozzyworkshop@gmail.com I can send you the instruction manual as a .pdf. If you scroll to page 3 paragraph b of the manual, it mentions it there. I have never needed to adjust mine. Hope this helps. Looking forward to your email. Regards.
