In this video, I'll show you how to use a wool picker. It's not fancy. Pickers are workhorses. But let me tell you, now that I have one, I'll never do without one again! If you spin wool by hand, or process sheep fleece (or any other fleece!), do yourself a favor and get a picker. Next to your spinning wheel or loom, it will probably become one of your favorite pieces of equipment!

I made mine and it seems to work about as well as yours. I used my picker on Alpaca fleece and it still does not remove the fine VM (vegetable matter). I think it tends to break up the VM into smaller pieces and actually made it harder to remove them. I tried it on both cleaned fleece and unwashed fleece and it did about the same job. Because it breaks up the VM into smaller pieces it does allow one to shake it out before carding. Give the fiber a good shake like shaking out a throw rug. I tried this on a over a dark cloth and could see lots of small VM falling out.
