If you could find a thin skewer stick to lift those remaining bits of fibre that would be more gentle on the drum tines.Using the doffer as you did could bend some of time.. IMO.. 😊

Thank you for showing how to spin across the top so clearly. I started spinning recently and was struggling with spinning across the top. I’ve watched multiple videos, but all I ever heard was that the hand holding the fibre supply was “doing all the work”, without really clearly showing what was happening or explaining it clearly. So far, I’m managing short forward draw and long draw reasonably well, but I’ve been gifted a gorgeous gradient braid. I want to keep the gradient intact and as long and gradual as possible, in order to knit a lace gradient half pi shawl with it. The gradient goes from dark blue to white and I have extra white fibre I can use to knit a knitted on lace border, which means I can just keep on knitting until I run out of yarn, and then do the border. Now I can start practicing without fear of messing up too much fibre and then I’ll be able to open up that braid…

Thank you for spinning it slow and explaining exactly how it twists the ply. I have watched several other videos and they just confused me. I now feel very confident on how to Navajo ply and will be trying it tomorrow.

I just got a drum carder and found your videos, imagine out of the box I quickly grabbed some alpaca, fluffed it, and sent it through. It quickly wound mostly around the large drum, but much on the smaller one! Duh! Didn’t move smaller drum forward, didn’t put wool first… just straight through like you would regular wool and wondered why it went in small drum. Laughing at myself now. Wish you were still filming.

If there are issues with spinning it you said it could be quality? I’m thinking more processing. That’s not the same, yes? That would depend on the yarn you want to create?

Hello I have recently gotten a matchless and despite oiling is squeaking quite a bit. I don't want to damage it! I tried calling the guild in Cincinnati but the voicemail is full. Do you know anyone in or near Cincinnati that might be able to help me figure out the squeak? Thank you!

Hi Stephanie, You mentioned in your "How to Spin a Gradient Yarn" getting together a team for "Tour de Fleece". Are you still getting a team together for 2024? You also mentioned having a LIVE spin together on Tuesdays. Are you doing the Lives? thanks

Good demonstration. I love the look of lock-spun yarn. I often spin it myself - you can’t buy this in a store, and I find it sells quickly at my guild sale.

Hi Stephanie, I am subscribed to you channel! I really enjoy your videos. I would like to learn to do art yarn, thick in part and unusual yarn combos, etc... And I would like to use the tools you are using. Could you do a tutorial on how to pick a carding drum, brushes, mat and spinning tools. What works for you? What do you like? Thank you so much. I really appreciate it! Keep making beauty! Thank you again.

I just learned myself that sometimes dye (no matter how much you use) if there is still lanolin in the fleece, the dye will not 'take' or if you have a type of bacteria in it that has stained it - no amount of scouring or dying with change the yellowing Just an fyi

I have found that dividing the Roving into Slivers and pre-drafting the Slivers (30% longer) does save time and work when spinning the yarn. I spin on a Haldane Orkney wheel and ply on an Ashford Traditional wheel. I can spin and ply and pound of roving into 2-ply worsted yarn of twenty wraps per inch, in three days.

This is a nice video! I think the way that works for you is the right way to do anything. I imagine the rationale to turn the fiber sideways is to misalign the fibers, but ultimately they probably get pretty much aligned again. I just bought a drum carder and I've never felt more creative. There is nothing better than spinning my own yarn to knit. Cheers from Saint Paul, MN!

No you are not doing it wrong. Either way it doesn't matter because you are creating a woolen batt. Worsted is only achieved with combs

I haven’t tried that technique. I may have to try it. Most fiber gurus I’ve seen feed it in going towards the teeth.

Hi, I am a new spinner just learning to spin using a drop spindle and I am fascinated by this video. I am a mixed media artist addicted to texture as well as colour and your plying techniques really speak to me. I have yet to tackle plying so it might be a while before I can do stuff like this. Probably a wheel would be necessary to get the various tensions required. So in the future for now but lots to think about. Thanks for sharing your processes.
