The yoyo hand reel (aka Cuban Yo-Yo) has been around for ages.
In fact, using a hand reel was the primary way to catch fish for many years (before these nice fancy reels came around).
Tony from Salt Strong was curious how well it would handle against inshore fish, so he put the yo-yo hand reel up to the test against some black drum.
In this video, Tony not only shows you how to properly use a yo-yo hand reel, but he even compare the two main types of yo-yo hand reels, shows to rig it, how to cast a yoyo, and even shows some footage on how to catch a black drum using the yoyo.
These yo-yo hand reels are great if you have a really limited budget, are traveling, or just want a new and challenging way to catch fish.
If you have any other tips on using yo-yo's for fishing, let us know in the comments.

I remember my stepfather using one of these almost 40 years ago. Back then the internet was years away. Good to know its still used today. Its a very cheap but effective alternative.

Love fishing from my kayak, hate how cumbersome a rod and reel plus paddle can be. THIS looks to be a great solution! Love the simplicity, love the challenge aspect.

We always had bigger line on the YoYos and didn't worry about the line breaking. You can use a short section of bicycle inner tube to protect your finger from getting cut or burned by the line.

David Taylor , Did u put the inner tube over your fingers ?

I use one of these all the time from my paddle board. I've caught red and black drum, sheepshead, and others. DON'T stick your hook into the line on the reel to store it!!! Use a rubber band or a piece of line with a slip knot. Especially with premium hooks, the sides of the point can be razor sharp, leading to weaknesses in the line on your reel.

would you recommend drilling a hole on the flat lip of the yoyo for a lanyard?, feel like I would just end up losing this in the ocean.

I'm little expert on fishing and i need your advice on lines to use on saltwater, surf fishing. at the beginning i will use a yoyo because i like it and in the future i will buy a rod. so my questions is: 1. can i use only fluorocarbon line on yoyo or i need a fluorocarbon leader to attach to it ? 2. is it the best for a yoyo or should i use like braided with fluorocarbon leader ? 3. what sizes do i need for the saltwater ? 4. right now what is the good brand to buy from ?

if you want to cast ---use a rod --- That is a drop line used it 60 years ago before all these modern lines --mine was wrapped around a wooden frame (hand made)

What's the maximum pound test line should use for saltwater
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong Год назад
There isn't a maximum, however, for inshore saltwater fishing 10lb braid covers all the bases. The lighter the line, the less the fish will be able to detect it in the water.
@ShihabdeentheCyclist

@@Saltstrong won't the lighter line be break?

Hey Tony. I've been eyeing your sunglasses in your videos. What brand and model are those? Look like Costa? I like the style, shape and size of lens. Also, what lens do you have in them?
@tonyacevedo3149
@tonyacevedo3149 7 лет назад
Marc Strickland yes they are the Costa Blackfin model with the glass lenses. They have a copper base with green mirror. I'm gonna be honest though I'm probably done with Costa glasses. Had these less than a year and the rubber is falling off. Nose piece is completely gone :( Same happened to my pair before these. Shopping around for a different brand!

When winding line onto the yoyo reel.....Is it wound clockwise or counter clockwise?
@orlandoaguilar5628
@orlandoaguilar5628 5 лет назад
Dan Druff . . . All depends on what direction you spooled your line to the cuban yoyo. You can decide what is more confortable foy you. Either way is ok.

Have you used braid on the hand line spool?
@nxtlvlluke7823
@nxtlvlluke7823 5 лет назад
Isotelus no you have to use at least 50lb mono otherwise it will chop your hands up
@plutoplatters
@plutoplatters Год назад
I'd say use 20 to 40 pound mono... seeing as there's NO drag. Trilene XL seems like the ticket. Also gloves.
