Assalamualaikum,
Today, we're going to revisit the topic of cell referencing, which comes in two forms: relative and absolute referencing. To recap, relative referencing occurs when you copy a formula to other cells, and the references in the formula adjust accordingly. For example, if you enter the formula `=B2+B3` in cell B5, copying this formula down will change the references to `=B3+B4`, and so on. This automatic adjustment is known as relative referencing.
In contrast, absolute referencing keeps the cell references constant, even when copied to other cells. This is done using a dollar sign (`$`). For example, if you use `$B$2` in a formula, copying it down will still refer to B2.
I'll demonstrate this in Excel. First, I'll show how relative referencing works by creating a simple multiplication table. By copying the formula `=A2*B2` down the column, you'll see the cell references change accordingly. Next, I'll show how to use absolute referencing by adding dollar signs, ensuring the references stay constant.
Let's apply this to a practical example with a table of account balances and zakat deductions. We'll compute the zakat by multiplying the account balance by 2.5%. Using relative referencing for the balance and absolute referencing for the percentage ensures accurate calculations as we copy the formula down the column.
Lastly, we'll calculate the remaining balance by subtracting the zakat from the account balance, ensuring the references adjust correctly.
I hope this clarifies the difference between relative and absolute referencing. Practice this in Excel, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. If you found this video helpful, please subscribe to my channel and share it with friends and family. Take care, and Allah Hafiz!
