This tutorial is about Amazing Mold Putty and how you can use it. How much it cost at craft store like Micheal's is $20 if you have a coupon around $10 depending on % off you have. You can buy it online too for about $24.99 through Amazon.
For a cheaper way to make molds check out my youtube page about Magic Mold which runs normally about $8.00. There is also a type you can use in the microwave and its reusable, its called ComposiMold but its in the $34 range for price depending on how much you need for your project.

Pushing an item into the mold can actually distort your mold! The earring shes using is pretty flat so its prob fine for that, but I'd suggest use the box instructions! If anyone is trying this, the box suggest that you actually roll the mixed putty over the item you are trying to create a mold of, and then you gently put the it on a flat surface, so the mold will be able to lay flat. I've tried both methods, and found that rolling the clay over the item is the way to go.

It's been years since I did this and yes rolling it over and on a flat surface is a good way to do this. But it's been since 2013 so I have learned a lot about clay since then.

A good money saving method for making silicone mold putty is by mixing 100% silicone caulking (about $5.00 US a tube) with corn starch (be sure to wear gloves) and use as putty. It takes a day to cure since it is an air drying product, but works well. You can also paint layers of pure silicone caulk onto large objects (be sure to apply a thin layer of Vaseline or paste wax onto your object) to prevent the silicone from sticking. Works well for casting larger objects in resins.

I've seen that and I definitely will try the cheaper DIY method too. I just bought this at 50% off at Michael's today so luckily it's not breaking the bank and I'll get to try this variety and compare options eventually.

Peace Seeker yes they are and I left one of these in a box never opened for about a year and recently used it. They mix fine but won't mold. So this has a shelf life. I am going to try silicone liquid next and make a mold with that. Will share in the next few weeks how that will go. It's a one to one mix like some resins.I am in the process of sculpting a few things to mold. I am also using different material to sculpt with and want to see how it does too.

Just a quick note on economizing (as you said it's expensive if you're doing a lot of stuff). If you're casting polymer clay, you don't have to use so much to mold an object the size of that earring. Only if you're using a liquid casting medium do you need that much of a base under the actual mold surface (to keep the liquid from spilling). Mine are a lot thinner and they work really well for clay (which I'm going to press in from both sides anyway).

How hard are the molds? Do you have a guess at the durometer? Thanks
@Creative_Shopowner
@Creative_Shopowner Год назад
They are not hard molds so they are some what flexible. If you bend them enough they will break though.. I have found placing the item down on and then pushing the puddy on top of the object to work the best. So you could use some clay to keep it in place and then press the putty on it. Yes you have to kind of guess on how much to use. If you want something that will last longer look into and try Silicon mold making kit. www.amazon.com/Silicone-Molds-Making-Kit-Translucent/dp/B081L99L7V/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1N5L8YCS51HYK&keywords=decorrom+silicone+mold+making+kit&qid=1670214832&sprefix=decorrom+silicone+mold+making+kit%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-2

@@Creative_Shopowner Thank you. I'll check it out. The reason I ask, is that I want the molded item to be the flexible thing - yet firm.
@Creative_Shopowner
@Creative_Shopowner Год назад
It pretty firm I have put resin in them too. They can withstand heat. It's great for small things an stuff you to work on right away.

I've used this in the past before with no issues. I sculpted a lot of polymer clay and made molds from them, even a complicated 3D one where i wrapped the whole clay in amazing putty and cut around the sides to get 2 halves. Now years later working on my new project, this time flat-sided tiny pieces, every single attempt failed! I don't know if i have a dud batch or not, there are no "sell by" labels on the box or anything at all, and yet my mold won't come out right. I know it's not me because I've done it before with success in the past and use the same clay brand "premo", so what's different? Every time i check the mold doesn't seem to want to stay around the edges of the clay, it's like it's avoiding staying firmly snug around the clays and their details, leaving warped edges. The clay wasn't dirty, i used alcohol to clean them before putting the putty on. I first placed my flat side of the clay on a glass then rolled the mold putty over it like the instructions says, then i thought maybe the class was too slippery causing the piece beneath to shift and move while the putty was curing, and maybe that's why it seems to be warping the edges, so i then put the clay pieces on masking tape and taped the edges of the tape to keep it from slipping around on the glass, but the same thing happens regardless........ The only thing i did in the past that i didn't do now was before i used a ceramic tile instead of glass, even if i tried it again with this batch i doubt there'd be a difference since glass and tile surfaces are so similar...... But my next move is to put more putty in the failed molds and then placing my clay inside it and squeezing the excess out and cutting off the overflow so maybe then i can fill in the gaps, details, and warped edges. And if all fails then i'm dumping the stuff and getting liquid mold makers.....

I think try to just use a new batch. I have had it expire on me before. So it might just not be mixing right. You should try the liquid kind. They have ones now you can heat up in the microwave and pour on and then reuse. I have to use one of those see how it works. I also have a liquid art silicone mold making kit I need to try out but haven't had anything I want to make a mold of but been planning out making something with polymer clay this week that I might want to try and make a mold of for later. So I might try it out see how well it works. My yellow molds still work today from this video but I found that their are now better things you can use. I made this video back in 2012. It does have limits the the clear liquid silicon doesn't. Amazon also has cool box now you can have to pour your molds into but really taking some post board ad a glue gone will to the same thing. Hope this helps.
