How To Use An Edge Sander
www.howtosandafloor.com/how-to...
In this video, I demonstrate how to sand the edge of a wood floor with an edge disk sander.
This is by far the fastest and highest quality way to sand the edges of the floor (those hand held belt sanders can make a mess). It has the power to remove paint, varnish and even nail heads, while also being engineered in such a way to create a nice smooth finish. You can of course go round the edges of the floor after with a rotex to get an even smoother finish if you want to.
Be sure to check out the article linked above on the HowToSandAFloor website. If you have any questions you can post them either below or on the article itself. Good luck!

Ben you saved a lot of people from destroying their floors by showing us the way the pros do the job. I saw your fails video and realized that I watched your drum video first (sheer luck) explaining landing and practicing on plywood was a floor saver here, and is looking like I could possibly do this by taking my time. Thank you for your advice and training.

When using the sander doesn't it cut across the grain & if so do the scratches show? What grit discs would you recommend?
@HowToSandAFloor
@HowToSandAFloor 9 лет назад
yes it does but you can't avoid that, the scratches can show especially if you are staining, which is why its vital you get the 36 or 40 grit scratches out full when you do the 60 grit, then get the 60 grit scratches out with the 80 or 100 grit. Its also best to go over the floor with an orbital/oscilating sander to remove all scratches

@HowToSandAFloor
@HowToSandAFloor 10 лет назад
If you want to keep the bevel, you really just need to not sand the floor too deeply. Usually if i sand the floor with just a 60 grit and finer, we can save quite a lot of the bevel, sometimes the floor is uneven in areas and where it pops up slightly the bevel will disappear. I don't sand or scrape the bevels myself, but sometimes customers will do it themselves before i arrive, especially if the previous finish was quite dark. hope that helps

Honestly just hire a pro don’t waist the time and money renting bum equipment that isn’t set up properly or hasn’t had proper maintenance (burnt or unlevel drums worn wheels,and so on) diy has caused more can you fix my floors then can you do them floors

lol mate dont tell me thats the best way to edge. you edge like that in front of a glass sliding door or roof to floor windows (on harder timbers spotted gum, iron bark etc). and i guarantee you you will get a call back cos you will leave a big dirty welt line from where you come back with the edger. EDGE AGAINST THE GRAIN AND FINISH WITH IT VERY QUICKLY. this bloke no idea
@HowToSandAFloor
@HowToSandAFloor 10 лет назад
Beccie Bishop Thanks for the comments, you are definitely right. It isn't the best way to do it. All im demonstrating in the video what is going to work the best for someone that doesn't have years of experience on the tools. I have to admit i disagree that the best way is to do it just straight against the grain. That's doable by a pro, but not the best. For someone doing it themselves its totally the wrong advice, it would look like the seven seas
@COLDSUDDENFURY
@COLDSUDDENFURY 9 лет назад
Ben, You seem to know how to use an edger.... although looking at the your method you've used to sand the body of the floor, you have been sanding in straight lines against the grain of the blocks. You may think it's a matter of opinion, but I have been doing this job 10 years +, and your method for sanding a herringbone block floor is just wrong. This type of flooring should be sanded diagonally, four times, corner to corner with each grade. What you have done scars every single block, as at no point are you ever sanding with the grain.
@andrewstewart9446
@andrewstewart9446 9 лет назад
+COLDSUDDENFURY So how do you sand with the grain on a parquetry floor? every other block is against the grain!! I thought his edging tecnik was really good. Well done Ben.
@COLDSUDDENFURY
@COLDSUDDENFURY 9 лет назад
Well Timberoo? I'm assuming you're probably Australian with that stupid name... I shouldn't really need to teach a "flooring specialist" his own job, but my method (the correct method) means you are only sanding against the grain half of the time you sand, cancelling out any lines you make ie... scarring, when you switch to go across what you've done, corner to corner x 4 with each grade. I have seen Ben's (and your) method many times, in fact, I am regularly paid to correct this corduroy effect left behind when people such as yourself, sand parquet floors against the grain for the whole time you are doing the job. You sand up and down with each grade because it's the lazy way, takes half the time, and your scarring would show up the minute you apply a sealant, especially if you were to apply a stain. My method not only cancels out scarring, but keeps the floor completely flat, and level, as each block being individual, is sanded with all grits, from every conceivable direction during the process. So to answer your question, you cant always, but if you are doing it correctly, you will only be sanding against the grain of half the herringbone pattern!! Hope you enjoyed my tutorial!!!
@HowToSandAFloor
@HowToSandAFloor 9 лет назад
I have also been doing it 10+ years. If you want to find out why I think you are wrong you will have to read my guide on sanding parquet floors on the website. I explain it clearly there. You are wrong, I promise ;)
@COLDSUDDENFURY
@COLDSUDDENFURY 9 лет назад
+How To Sand A Floor +How To Sand A Floor I have just looked at your tutorial on the website, and the key thing here is the machine you are using. Your fear of leaving a "lumpy or uneven surface" could be down to the fact that the width of the belt on your machine is only 8". Your drum is able to sand into one singular soft block, because your drum is smaller than standard/most common parquet blocks. The reasons given on your web page do not effect me at all, as I don't use anything smaller than a 10" continuous belt sander, and i wouldn't use anything smaller for this very reason. Even for strip/plank floors, an extra 2" of width makes a lot of difference in both time, and how level you can make a floor without ever needing to sand floorboards diagonally (A HHS hire machine instruction). Also on your appraisal of the Hummel machine, like the Clarke floor crafter, I find them a little poor for the reasons stated above. The oldest, but still the best machine I own is Deva belt 250.
@HowToSandAFloor
@HowToSandAFloor 9 лет назад
+COLDSUDDENFURY did you read the rest of the article? The whole point is that sanding against the grain is more aggressive than sanding with the grain. Sanding the floor diagonally means you are going 50% with the grain and 50% against the grain and that's what causes the unevenness. It does t matter how wide your drum is. You really shouldn't be reading hss instructions as they are totally clueless. If you are sanding pine floor boards then you should know after 10 years that a knot will lump out of the floor and will cause a line sideways across the floor every time the drum or a wheel goes over it. But to top it off it is in the instruction manual of most of the floor sanding machines I have seen. I have worked with many other companies over the years and debated this with many people. If your goal is to convince me then I would save time and give up. Also the Hummel is older and is the best. While it's slower on the higher grits the Hummel can really rough up nasty floors faster
@ArmandRex
@ArmandRex 5 лет назад
That paper should be as big as the disc, 178mm... The disc has been worn down and should be replaced long time ago. Also, why use such a fine grit? Is it 80 i see written on the paper? Would go 24, maybe 40 for first sanding, would be a LOT more efficient. You`re gonna have to use the RO150 anyways, so going 40,80 would be preferable if 40 works :)
