Hi Fernanda, I'm from Brazil too, but I live in US since 2012... I recently bought Assimil to learn German (it will be my 4th language). Good luck in your journey, and don't apologize for your mistakes, it is part of the learning process.

My experience with Assimil is this: listen to the recording all the time, especially on your free time, passively or actively. Then read the book, one chapter at a time. At the same time, keep on listening to the mp3s/ audio of the chapters. Then, listen carefully to the dialogues, and try to distill the words or phrases or idioms that you don't understand. Write them down. Then forget about them. Keep on listening to the audio. Read the book here and there. Keep distilling the words, expressions, and idioms that you don't understand until you understand everything. I am still using my first Assimil book I bought from 3 years ago. It's amazing to see what your brain does or does not retain. Everyone thinks differently. So, always focus on the things that you find more challenging to remember and retain. But, ultimately, you will have to branch out of Assimil and start talking to native speakers of your desired language, read books, and listen to the news.

Thank you for the review, I would like to share my personal experience when using this book. I follow almost all the steps with a few following changes: 1. Listen to dialogue without looking at the transcript 2. Read the dialogue and translation at the same time 3. Read the explanation, pay attention to the new vocabulary and grammar points 4 Repeat the audio sentence by sentence, also pay attention to the pronunciation guide 5. After understanding everything in the dialogue and explanation, listen to the dialogue without the transcript 6. Make translation exercise into listening exercise, write down everything you hear 7. Compare with the transcript and mark which word or sound I cannot understand 9. Do the exercise 10. Learn everything by heart and review one day, seven day, and a month later, respectively. Even though it is a bit time-consuming, but I hope it will pay off later.

Thanks Kent, I moved to France 8 months ago and have been struggling to learn from the audio without the instructions from the book. Clever me had to go and download and print out the lessons without the instructions, I've ordered the book now..

I wish I would have paid attention to this video before starting Assamil. I’ve done one month and didn’t feel that anything was sticking but with this method I feel much more confident. Thank you for your video.

Thank you! I was a bit confused with the second wave translation part as I am almost reaching that part of the book. You have clarified it to me. It sounds doable :) Thank you very much.

I adore Assimil. I have 10 books in the shelf already. They bring the quickest results. And on top of that they are actually pretty fun, interlarded with humor. A shame so few people know about it, at least in my country it is far from being the standard.

Apologies if this is a silly question but essentially could steps 1-2 and 4-6 be cut down to 1 point saying "loop and read the text as often as you like so you eventually understand the audio without text"? The reason I ask is I do that with listening on Yabla/Beelinguapp and could transfer that method to Assimil. Then you could do the shadowing in step 3 and 7 at the end when the audio is understood to help accent/speaking etc. Does this sound reasonable or am I missing something? So potentially: 1. Loop and read the text as often as you like so you eventually understand the audio without text 2. Shadow the text a few times 3. Do exercises / notes Thanks

How is Assimil German? I have Assimil Mandarin Chinese, French, and Spanish. I usually start with Pimsleur and then do Assimil once I'm halfway through Pimsleur.

Steve Fischer I do something similar, but mine is as follows: 1) Pimsleur to completion whatever is available. (Imitating native speakers and conversational without reading or writing) 2) Michel Thomas to completion of Foundation and Advance. (Quick grammar overview through audio, but nothing comprehensive) 3) Assimil whatever is available with book and audio. (Speak, read and starting to write) I prefer to talk, think and understand the language first. Reading and writing is last.

Hey bro I really want to learn Spanish and I know assimil is really good but they have Spain's accent of Spanish which sounds bad and annoying to me, if I bought the full version would I be able to switch to a Mexican dialect of Spanish? If not It sucks because I cant use one of the best apps for learning Spanish.
@yulianaalexandra2385
@yulianaalexandra2385 4 года назад
You might choose Spanish from America. It's a very interesting choice because you'll be learning the Spanish of 80% of Spanish speakers. Spanish from Mexico is amazing and understandable in the whole continent. Keep on!
@thecid9640
@thecid9640 4 года назад
the spanishof Spain is more neutral, most of the words are pronounced as they are written, but the mexican somethime use incorrect sounds in the pronounce like Corazónm they say corasson, or smthing like that and in much things they invented diferent words for say others.
@vivaeuropa
@vivaeuropa 4 года назад
@@thecid9640 To be honest I like how the corason sounds more than the corathon sound the Spaniards make, it sounds very distinctive to my ears and like a lisp. Other than the Cs making the th sound and a couple other things I think it sounds very formal and intelligent. I'm not trying to disrespect Spaniards but I prefer south American sounding Spanish.
