In this video I explain what a systemic pesticide is and how we can use the Bonide Systemic Insect Control as a preventive measure to keep our houseplant collections safe and sound.
Find it here: amzn.to/3H15qWA
Systemic pesticides are a crucial part of keeping plants free and clear of debilitating pests and they are something professional gardeners like myself must use from time to time. While I strive to garden as organically as possible, sometimes there is a need to use a pesticide. Please ensure your pets do not consume plants treated with this insect control! Nobody wants bad insects killing their plants and this can help solve that problem #pestcontrol #houseplants #healthyplants

This product is my go to for thrips. I had a nasty thrip infestation and tried everything, spending a lot on beneficial bugs and neem, soap, and you name it. This did the trick. One thing I found is that this product actually seems to promote spider mites. For the mites I use the concentrated bonide liquid. I have to say though, I’d much rather deal with the mites than the thrips. 😊

@@dana102083 The concentrate is best for mites. The systemic seems to to be ineffective. If you’re treating thrips you should be more than covered with what you have.

I learned of this product a couple weeks ago from watching someone on RU-vid. Then couldn’t get it here due to regulations. I have been able to get it finally. What an awesome thing to preemptively deal with insects instead of mixing up batches of sprays (alcohol, soaps,etc) and attempting removal of infestations

About a year and a half ago someone brought me several succulent plants from a store in southern state. They looked fine but obviously had been treated before the sale. A couple of months later I began finding mealy bugs all over those very same succulents. Now, I am still fighting them. I had never had to deal with mealy bugs before. I have used about every method of getting rid of them that I have read about or seen online. I purchased the Bonide systemic insecticide about two months ago and so far they are still chewing up my plants. I have lost several tropical plants as well as succulents. Those monsters devoured my beautiful Portulacaria afra plants. They seem to love them and my African Violets the most. The systemic product has done nothing to stop the mealy bugs. I thought maybe it would take time for the product to get into the plants but now I believe that the mealy bugs just are not affected by the insecticide.

Mealy bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of. You may be better off trashing those plants before the mealy spreads

Awesome, quick explanation. Thank you! I just found an aphid on one of my new plants and I'm panicking 😂 I've had horrible luck with sprays in the past and have never used systemic granules so your video was really helpful! Currently the plant with the insects is away from my other plants ( and far away from my brand new white wizard 😬😭🤞 ). Hoping I can get ahead of the problem before it becomes a problem, ya knoowwww?? Also...I thought you might like knowing that your video is the first thing that shows up on Google when searching for how to use systemic granules, so kudos for that! Can you clarify one point? Are you using this only on particular plants after noticing a pest problem? Or are you using it as a preventative? If as a preventative, are you applying it to each of your plants, or only those that seem to be more susceptible to pests?
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations 9 месяцев назад
Good question. I am using it on plants that have some scale at the moment as well as certain plants that are typically more susceptible, such as my Meyer Lemon, Anthurium, etc
@tee7230

I use bonide systemic every 8 weeks. Use it on 3/17 but repotting a plant so added to new soil on 4/3. Today, 3/10 found 2 plants loaded w scale. Shouldnt it have gotten into the kalanchoe plant from the 3/17 treatment and then the 4/3 just treated new soil. Praying the rest of my plants dont have any hidden.
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations 5 месяцев назад
The life cycle with scale is tricky, because unhatched eggs are unaffected by the bonide

can you just add the scoops into the water container and let it dissolve and then water pot?
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations 4 месяца назад
I wouldn’t advise that, it’s meant to dissolve slowly in the soil or else it can burn the roots if over applied in one fell swoop. There are other systemic that acts that way though

Bonide systemic total helped me with gnats, after I moved into more darker apartment with not lot of natural light. But now after about 3 weeks after using Bonide, my plants' top soil has light white-ish mold covering.. Did anyone experience that? PS: I started watering my plants from the botton only since I replanted them and added Bonide.
@plantvibrations

It could be happening due to the bottom watering providing excess moisture

Systemic is a terrible product. Best thing I ever did was to release green lace wing larvae in my house and I rarely see them and I never have pests anymore. I do this every 3 months. They're cheap asf. As for fungus gnats apple cider vinegar on a cup in your room or sticky traps are the best.
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations 9 месяцев назад
Even for scale?
@pixiesprite9433
@pixiesprite9433 9 месяцев назад
@plantvibrations absolutely that was my number 1 issue however you have to manually remove the established scale first the lace wings will eat them but it's easier for them to catch the scale larvae because they're drawn to the movement.

The only thing it has work for me so far is systemic bonide granules ,It help me save my collection of plants .I have try ladybugs , peroxide ,vinager ,the white dust with long name that gave me asma .,and I order some of the little insects that you are talking about but I think they were death because the infestation of thrips and gnats got worse . Update ,I recently got an infestation of spider mites after winter was over, and got rid of it by soaking the pot deep warering , big leaf plants wipe them off with acohol cloth ,suculents spray acohol,ferns and small leaves delicate plant spray water at hig speed with a hose plant upsise down ,and repeat this every 2 weeks during 1 month and a half .Now in only mist all the underside of the plants with a spary can every 2 days ,spider mites do not like water on leaves .And I have save againg my 200 species plant collection ,this week im apliying bonide againg because is probably wash of by all that deep watering .Make shure to add a fan on your plant room for air circulation otherwise you are going to gett root rot because water will take longer to evaporate ,specially in plastic or ceramic pots
@pixiesprite9433
@pixiesprite9433 8 месяцев назад
@gretap3917 pesticides can also cause this. The safest one is probably abamectin. Still green lace wings are excellent. Pixiespriteplants uses them on ginstafram and that's me
@pixiesprite9433
@pixiesprite9433 8 месяцев назад
@@gretap3917 @gretap3917 Make sure you have good humidity. Make sure you shower your plants and wipe down leaves. This keeps spider mites at bay, which prevents scale and mealy bugs. Spider mites weaken the plant and open it up to other pests. Healthy plants are less likely to be attacked by pests as they have better defensives. Keep unhealthy plants away from the main collection. Another thing that works great is purchasing a huge clear tote that you can put infested plants and placing the pest control insect inside. Put the lid on and put a grow light on top. This is effective for severe infestations, and it's really fun to watch the lace wigs or lady bugs or predatory mites go to work! But here's some food for thought... When you kill off all the healthy inverts in your soil by using systemic, now your plant is at an increased risk of fungal infections from overwatering or underwatering.. Springtails isopods, and Millipedes keep the soil free from fungus and decaying matter, which allows the plant to have a stronger root system, which allows a plant to be Iess susceptible to pests and root rot. If you have a large collection, you will find springtails, and Millipedes are your BEST FRIEND.
