How To Use Chesterfield's Horns Bridge Roundabout Correctly

Here we take a look at how to use Chesterfield's Hornsbridge Roundabout. Tricky for some, but if you follow the lanes correctly, you shouldn't have a problem. Check this video on how to use it correctly.
Check these time stamps for the approach you want to skip to:
Hasland (A617(S)): 02:35
Derby Road (A61(S)): 03:37
B&Q: 05:22
Town Centre (A617(N)): 07:20
Tesco Bypass (A61(N)): 08:42
----------------------------------------------------------------
Common Mistakes:
The most common mistake being people going from the right hand lane leaving Hasland Bypass, and heading into Town Center!
Another point to mention, when leaving Town Center, I'd be inclined to also use the middle lane to go down Derby Road. Even though the sign doesn't say you can, the markings on the roundabout do lead there - but do so at your own risk and with caution.
Also, when heading towards Town Center, those who are local know there is another roundabout ahead (and the road splits into 3 lanes). Use the left lane to go towards the Retail park in the left land and straight on in the middle lane(off in the left lane and head towards the police station. If heading into Town Center itself (ie, the Donut etc), then use the right hand lane which also goes straight on and get off in the right.

Your description makes the use of lanes on this roundabout obvious, a very clear description. HOWEVER in practice (observed as an occasional visitor) the geography of the roundabout has some drivers cutting corners hence not keeping to lanes; I believe this is what causes problems.

Genuinely believe you should give your licence up of you can't abide by simple road markings/signs. It's not difficult. The fact someone could get this wrong and still drive our roads is absolutely frightening.

I know this is a few years ago now but looking at the simple explanation is ok but what I get several times is - yes I’m in the LH lane from Hasland to end up on Markham Road, but folk in the middle lane assume I’m going left on to Derby Road and drive straight across my path with NO indication! Also you mentioned about folk using the RH lane then cutting right across to the LH lane exiting for town centre… my theory about this (exactly the same at Pleasley travelling to Mansfield) as soon as Sat Nav says “3rd exit” unfamiliar folk automatically go for the RH lane then hear “take the exit” so some just yank the steering wheel and end up on their side… 🤔

One thing I noticed is how simple it seems on the diagram to come down the A61 heading South and leave the roundabout to go to B&Q (at 9.40). I usually find it difficult to get to the left lane as there are cars already queueing at the lights who've followed the green line or come off the A617 and are going into town. Approaching it from the North isn't made any easier by the traffic speeding by to your right, which you're trying to join because you don't want to go to Hasland. Got to agree with Ben, traffic lights belong outside roundabouts, not on them.

Just yesterday the missus was driven into by a stupid bint trying to access the A617N from the right hand lane. I cannot fathom how people can get it wrong. It's so simple its untrue.

This is one of the easiest roundabouts to use I have ever come accross, being on two wheels I am however glad of the lights that frustrate others as it keeps the speed down for those who inevitably get it wrong.

The A61 to Derby is always a problem coming from the town centre. Almost every time I have used it some idiot uses it to turn towards Derby from the lane to A617. Then they BEEP the learner as if they are in the wrong! One of my biggest frustrations

I really don't like going from town centre to Derby Road in that right hand lane because the road eventually goes to a single lane and, when it's busy, I always feel uncomfortable with that. I don't know whether to try and get in the left hand lane as soon as possible or wait until the two lanes end. I did nearly end up having an accident because of that one time. Any advice would be welcome.

The council told me that the middle lane coming from town is for going towards Hasland ONLY, no turning right towards Derby Road (which makes 4.57 and 6.31 wrong). To go to Derby Road from town, you should be in the right hand lane and then as you pass the A61N, you should have clear access to go in the inside lane for going to McDonalds or the middle lane for Derby Road, or outer lane for B&Q or back to town. I can't think of any roundabout that lets you turn right from a middle lane.
@RandomlySet

All the lines are as the roundabout is marked.
@CraigWrightStraygoat
@CraigWrightStraygoat 5 лет назад
@@RandomlySet I've had it confirmed by the council last week - coming from town, you cannot go in the middle lane and turn right up Derby road. The lines in the road don't help because they kind of imply you can. The council put a new road sign up in November that shows only the right lane is for turning right to Derby road. Unfortunately, the placement of the sign leaves a lot to be desired and you will probably only see it if you are coming from Hasland, Derby road or the estate with B&A on. They also told me there's nothing they can do about the bottleneck at the cinema.

Craig Wright yes it’s all signed I drive a bus and use the right lane for derby road and when I try n move to the slow lane I get pipped by a car who’s come around in the middle lane it winds me up.. such a simple roundabout
@MrPmt182
@MrPmt182 Месяц назад
Exactly right , the middle lane from town is clearly marked A617 so you are in the wrong lane if you want A61 and I’ve seen professional drivers ie bus drivers 51 bus use middle lane to go up A61 as it is easier too manoeuvre to inside lane but that causes traffic behind going up 617 to slow down

Most common mistake I see on this roundabout is people coming from Town wanting to head south on the A61, but instead of using the correctly marked lane (the right hand one, 7:47 mark in the vid), they get into the middle lane, which is signed for A617 only. People in the correct, right hand lane, then find that they are being cut-up from the inside. This is especially bad when the people in the wrong lane don't always indicate that they are actually turning right, meaning people in the correct lane don't always realise where the driver in wrong lane is heading, as they expect them to be going down the A617, not the A61(S).
@RandomlySet
@RandomlySet 7 лет назад
TheBoothy666 true, but the middle lane does flow naturally to Derby Road, but as you say, the signs says M1 only..... I came from town yesterday and headed down Derby Road (not something I do often). So I used the right lane as the sign says, and it is easy enough to get left at the lights on the roundabout if you're heading into the cinema, you just have to watch your mirrors
@jroberts6503
@jroberts6503 6 лет назад
Completely agree yet people are still adamant that using the middle lane from town centre will get them on to Derby Rd.
@RandomlySet
@RandomlySet 6 лет назад
Yup. Although the way the roundabout "flows" you'd think they would mark it so you can use the middle lane to go down Derby Road.

The middle lane from town naturally flows onto the fast lane of bypass i used to live at Holmewood and would always use middle lane onto fast lane of bypass because of slower vehicles only to have a car in front swing round to right plus not indicating and you nearly rear end them

Nightmare. To continue using the A617 from the M1, look for A619 markings: not a mention of A617. It's alright for locals who know the area, but not for visitors.

biggest problem I've seen on this roundabout is people looking at the wrong traffic light, the one nearest to your vehicle maybe on red the next one green so some people go through the red .
