Got my test in exactly a week. I never had an issue with this roundabout until I entered and exited it in a brand new way…

ive got my test in 3 weeks in chesterfield and this roundabout has been my absolute biggest nightmare, youve absolutely saved the day with this video thank you so much!! how would you recommend approaching the roundabout and picking a lane before you reach the signs which tell you which lane to be in. would it be an issue if you safely switched lanes once you know what lane to be in? also if you have time could you please do a video on tesco roundabout! or hornsbridge roundabout? thank you so much :)

No roundabout is confusing if you watch your road markings. If the instructor or examiner asks you, "at the roundabout take the second exit". Here the left lane is marked first exit only, the right lane is marked second or subsequent lanes, so, mirror, signal mirror again (just in case) for a lane change to right lane if necessary, cancel signal in lane, follow the lane onto the roundabout signalling left as you pass the first exit. Don't panic if you get confused and take the next exit, the examiner will not fail you for going the wrong way, providing your signalling and position are correct. In twenty years as an instructor (grade 6 for the last eight) I've had 4 pupils who have taken the wrong way and all passed because they didn't panic! One thing watch out for LGV's very often they will stay in the left hand lane no matter which exit they want - mainly because of the size of their vehicle and the blind spots so give big vehicles extra room. The magic words are always practice, observe, and if you are still confused do it again!!

I’m glad that halfway through we still end up agreeing people can get confused at the roundabout. Whether they make the right or wrong decision following their confusion is another matter. You are aware that LGVs will be in the left hand lane no matter which exit but how many other drivers know this? I’ve driven through roundabouts smaller than this on other part of the country including London and LGVs still manage to maintain correct lane on entering the roundabout. Bear in mind there are also temporary signs on the floor on approaching the roundabout (from Station road, Brimington road and Dunston road) to help simplify and help drivers plan ahead especially for drivers not familiar with the area. I’ve met other local instructors who have mentioned similar issues with the roundabout by the way especially with drivers hunting at them when they’re actually the ones in the wrong. Lastly please do keep in mind that not all road markings are correct and if need be I’ll make a follow up video to evidence this and hopefully you can help me understand better if I’m getting something wrong here as I’m still learning and happy to point that out.

@@OJKENNY I would not be so rude (I hope) as to say anyone is wrong; especially to someone who has local knowledge and the interest to produce a video to clarify such important points. On the point of incorrect marking, that is a serious issue, they do exist and, of course can cause confusion and danger; I also know how long producing a video takes! Please don't think that my comments were a personal criticism, just an old instructor reminiscing - I've finished up with four wheels on a roundabout in the past - embarrassing when there are three policemen studiously looking the other way!! Good luck with the videos I look forward to seeing more.

@@Tuberesu I hope I didn’t come across as to suggest you or your point was wrong. I really appreciate fellow instructors’ input on the channel and hope for more. Local knowledge again is very vital hence why I also try to remind viewers to work with their instructors’s local knowledge and discuss my content with them if any confusions arises as I’m also happy to receive important local knowledge/tips in the comments as you did in the previous comment. My response was directly to point of “No roundabout is confusing if you follow the road markings”. But then if we agree some road markings can be incorrect then that leads us back to the roundabout or road being confusing and this was the message I was trying to relay. Hope to have more input from you and your local knowledge in the future videos and I’m always happy to be corrected and discuss points where and when necessary 😀🙏
